Ironic since Tahoe was considered for National Park designation way back when. But the loggers left it a total disaster and everyone at the time said, "Why would we want THIS place as a park?" it was in such bad shape. But despite secondary and even tertiary logging operations, the area has rebounded quite well. Not many old growth trees left in the basin, but there are a few, some easily reached by a short hike from pavement.

Hi Steve, you mentioined Huell Howser in your video. I miss Huell, he had some really good content in his videos. I don't know how far ahead you are on videos but if you are still up in the Donner Pass area there's an area where you can walk through some of the original tunnels for the Transcontinental Railroad. And right ourside of one of these is some Native America Petroglyphs in the rock. They are not blocked off unfortunately so people walk all over them. It's near the China Wall on Donner Summit area. You can Google that.

Nice suggestion. The history of Donner Pass is long and very interesting. The Dutch Flat toll road, which went over Donner, was mentioned early in this video. Steve will have to track down Norm Saylor for some deep personal history of the area. I was thrilled when a week in Tahoe this summer just so happened to coincide with the steam engine Big Boy coming up and over the pass. Got in a fantastic mountain bike ride in Summit Valley, swim in Lake Mary, and then topped off with Big Boy at full steam just about to enter the Mt. Judah tunnel. Epic!!!

I used to live in Reno which isn't very far from Lake Tahoe and to this day I still Miss the area. Thanks for adding Lake Tahoe to your tour. BTW: Lake Tahoe is around 1600 ft deep only at its deepest point, which is actually up in Crystal Bay in the Northeast part of the lake. It is still pretty deep where you were at though. I think pretty much anywhere you go in the lake. Unless you're right next to the shore, it's deep enough that no light penetrates to the bottom.
@dudeonbike8004 күн бұрын
True. But waters right off the shore at Rubicon Pt. drop approximately 1,200 feet. So, there's ample deep blue water in much of the lake.

My family were cattle ranchers and their summer grazing lands were up there near Lake Tahoe. My dad went on one of the cattle drives. One of the smaller lakes nearby was named after my great-great-grandfather. My grandfather took me up there in the late 1950s and said that no one had ever been able to measure how deep Lake Tahoe was because it was so deep they didn't have the ability to measure it. I lived in Tahoe in the late 70's then moved to Reno. Tahoe is fantastic but now is very much a case of the "haves and have nots" with homes on the lakefront going for tens of million of dollars. Fun fact-I have a relative in emergency services for Norhter Nevada. There's a major fault line that runs directly under Tahoe. There are operational scenarios for a "Tahoe Tsunami" with the theory being that a major earthquake could result in a large area of a mountain sliding into the lake displacing millions of gallons of water. The Truckee River is the only outlet out of the lake and is one of only a few rivers on the planet that never reaches the ocean. It flows Eastward, traveling 121 miles and terminating in Pyramid Lake.

I want to get out to Aurora. I know there isn't much there but every time I've been to Bodie I look at the road heading to it and I want to know what's down it (though I know I probably can't actually go that way).

Awesome! You went above and beyond, taking a boat out to the corner! I imagine Tahoe is a big enough body of water to create it's own weather to some extent. Makes me think of Loch Ness. I love that style of 1880s-1920s rustic architecture. The Awahnee hotel in Yosemite is a favorite. I laughed out loud when you said CA wanted the whole Sierras...because of the gold. Gold factors into many California stories! That view of Emerald Bay with the island is so famous. It was so fun to see those great views in 'real time', so thank you for that. I rode with a friend from South Lake Tahoe, up the west side of the lake to Truckee and on to Sacto one January in the early 1980s. We stopped in Reno for 15 minutes (as one does), and walked through a casino, back in the days when CA didn't have any. This has been a great series!

Thank you. Yeah, you don't realize how big the lake is until you see it.

Steve the house my family owned in Long Beach, California is also on the Registry of Historic places. It is located at 3755 Myrtle Avenue in Long Beach, California. The plaque is located on the front right side of the house.

Wonderful Tahoe video. Thank you. Grew up camping at D.L. Bliss; hiked the Rubicon Trail at 6 with my Teddy Bear. Ironic that Zuckerberg is gobbling up land at Sugar Pine Point. My grandmother introduced my father to the west shore of Tahoe in 1949. Her grandfather owned the Palo Alto house Zuckerberg currently owns. Funny additional family connection for me. Shame we don't still have that SF-Truckee-Tahoe City train service anymore. Would be a life saver these days. My kid, leaving at 5am, drove from the Bay to Truckee in under 3 hours a few winters back. Driving from Truckee to Palisades took ANOTHER THREE HOURS! And once they got there, no parking. A train would make this trip a breeze. Dang, the State of CA bought SGP property in '65, my birth year. I've complained that our public trust has not expanded with CA's population growth. Since my birth, the state's population has doubled, but has state park land doubled in that time? Doubt it - at least it's NOT Tahoe beachfront land acquisition made available to the public. Shame our public lands cannot keep up with demand. This explains the insane situation trying to find and secure a camping spot on the lake. Plus, why do we allow Nevada folks - with their anti-tax boasts - use parks CA taxpayers have secured? There should be consequences for tax-cutters. CA parks should be reserved for CA residents first and foremost. Out-of-staters should go to the end of the line AND pay higher rates. They do the latter in Utah; no reason CA shouldn't do same. And it's no better on the NV side. Wanna visit Sand Harbor? Better get there by 7am, probably earlier on the weekends if you want to get in. Again, WAY too much demand not being met. Not that the lake's roads can take more traffic though... E-bikes might fix much of this problem. 16:55 you were driving on a glacial lateral moraine separating Emerald Bay from Cascade Lake. LOVE that section of the highway! "Tallac" is pronounced "Tal-LAC" with emphasis on the second syllable. I hiked up Tallac five or so years ago and the view from up there took me by surprise. Felt like I could see the curvature of the earth. So much higher than I expected. (And I've been to the top of Rubicon Peak, a few other high points on the west shore, as well as up at Heavenly. None of these spots seemed even remotely as high as Tallac, view-wise. It's a long hike (6 hrs. for me) with lots of climbing and descending, but worth every step! BTW, meant to correct you in an earlier video about the Sierra Nevada. A lot of natives and non-natives us the misnomer "Sierras." The Sierra Nevada is ONE mountain range, so it's referred to in the singular, or "Sierra." Drives me crazy, especially when used on TV or by the media. Thanks for letting me correct your minor mistake. Love your sense of humor too. Gee, you'd think they'd put a marker at the corner. Otherwise, how can people tell if they're in CA or NV water?

My then-husband and I spent quite a bit of time at Lake Tahoe in the 1980s as he once lived there and had a lot of friends in the area around South Lake Tahoe and Stateline. One day we parked somewhere along the west shore of the lake, unloaded our bikes, and followed the bike path north. That was how we happened upon the Ehrman mansion, and were lucky enough to arrive just as a tour of the house was about to begin. Among other things the ranger/tour guide talked about how there were a number of people still living who had worked on the property, and were able to contribute information as far as how the house had been furnished and decorated in its heyday. I think she said that some original furnishings were found and brought back, and the interior looked much like it had when Mrs. Ehrman lived there. A very enjoyable experience, and if I were in the area again at the right time, 40-some years later, I would visit it again. We also had the opportunity to explore the Tallac historic site on one of those trips.
