My new personal sound design pack :) bit.ly/MySound...
Lake Toba, exploring a volcanic caldera in North Sumatra of Indonesia. Watch the Behind the scenes here - • LAKE TOBA | Behind The... This is where I got to briefly travel for 3 days and play with my camera and of course make a short cinematic travel film. The weather wasn’t on our side unfortunately but nonetheless it was still beautiful to explore Lake Toba, Samosir island and the Batak culture. The lake is surrounded by mountains and jungles with flowing waterfalls (we visited Sipiso - piso and Efrata). We ended the trip by going further north from the lake to Bukit Lawang where we went deep into the jungles to search for Orang-utans (Orangutang), an amazing experience for sure! 3 Day’s was not nearly enough to cover all the beauty that is out there, I’ll have to return for a much longer visit and hopefully not get as unlucky with the weather. I hope you guy’s enjoyed a brief look at the trip, hopefully I get to upload more of these shorter trips in the near future :)

Another stunning video Bryn! There's no reason for you to be unsure to release an edit, it's obvious that your instincts prove how well you can put together an edit without any input from someone else! Would love to see more short videos like this whenever you get the chance to film on small trips!

Nice clips and I love the way you transition with the music. Your scenes took me back-my wife and I spent 4 years biking around the world and part of that was biking from the south to the north of Sumatra. We loved our time in Lake Toba. Critically, though, I tired of your edit about halfway through because there isn't a good flow. It's like you would just pop in a cool clip because it was cool-not because it carried your story. I hate to be the naysayer here, but that's just my feeling. Keep up the great shooting.

It just looks like every other “travel video” to me. Always the same effects, always forcing in either EDM or ethereal music from their home country instead of local sounds and just natural sounds (some credit for editing that in as texture, but kind of in a cheap way IMO). Always the slowmo shots. Always the shot of rice or wheat or whatever blowing in the breeze. Always the shot of the hot white girl looking away into the distance. And NEVER any information about the place whatsoever. As you know, orangutans aren’t just climbing around trees in Lake Toba or the Toba Highlands. Neither are langurs. That was filmed in a completely different eco region down outside of Bukit Lawang. When I first went to Sumatra back in ‘05, you had to ride for some time through jungle roads to get there. It was secondary forest mostly, but it was still a natural barrier to the actual park (Gunung Leuser). The area where people stay in Bohorok is now surrounded by oil palm plantations. You actually have to walk through plantation just to get to where it meets the forest now. This is information that people should understand and know about!!! Because Sumatra is not some heavenly paradise!!! It has places that can fool one into thinking that, but it has actually been THE front line for tropical deforestation for the past three decades. It’s a complete ecological disaster and a looming humanitarian disaster as long as the degradation continues. But that wouldn’t go well with a video hell bent on portraying perfection. I too spent years cycling around. I never made it around the world. I made it from Shanghai to Singapore and then got stuck in Indonesia for 12 years. I couldn’t pry myself away. And so I decided to log as many miles as I could throughout the archipelago. I worked to save money for extended bike tours. Quietly plodding away down all the backroads I could find. I was always inspired, but I was also often horrified by what I saw. And no place hit me harder than Sumatra. Breath taking beauty juxtaposed alongside total devastation. Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment (it’s a tough island on a bike), but I returned quite a few times. Maybe I wanted to see what I could before it was too late. The changes with each successive return were not subtle. Entire mountainsides clear cut, monoculture plantations creeping ever further into one of the world’s most biodiverse rainforests. And fires burning out of control - days spent pedaling through smoke that turned the sun blood red. And yes, pockets of beauty that are pretty much indescribable. Who knew heaven and hell existed side by side? Maybe that’s a story that I’m responsible for telling. Maybe I should learn how to make videos like this. The skill involved is something I don’t take lightly. The aesthetics are commendable. Maybe I’m the asshole here for such a biting critique and bringing so much negativity. But this video, just like all the others out there that all look almost the same, just smack of disingenuousness. You clearly know more about the technical side of these things, and so your critique holds that kind of weight - lack of continuity in the story he’s trying to tell. Fair enough, I guess. I think I’m probably not qualified to say. My critique lays more in the story itself. It’s shallow. It’s anything but unique. And it’s essentially a lie. You can still go to Samosir and forget about the world for a few days. The weather, the views, the pace of life, the wonderful people there: it can all lull you into a nice and very comfortable false sense of security, so to speak. But you still have to get there. And what you see along the way is the actual reality. Whether you’re coming from Medan or Padang, Sibolga or Subulusalam, there’s no way to avert your gaze from what’s happening. With a brand new discovery of an entirely new subspecies of orangutan severely threatened by habitat destruction just on the far side of Toba’s western slope, it seems like an opportunity missed for such a talented videographer to leave that out of the story. Maybe the aesthetics are masking a lack of actual deep talent, who knows? And maybe I really am just a bitter asshole for leaving my thoughts this way. I mean, what have I really ever done? Well, I never lied about it. I can tell you that. I tried to put the truth out there and I was told to shut up. I’ll probably be told to shut up again. But this filmmaker will always know, whether it bothers him or not, there’s a very different side to this story that he, like all the others out there with the exact same looking videos, keeps leaving out.
