I'd rather live in Chicago than Lakewood Ranch. I grew up in Kalamazoo (used to visit Chicago maybe 2-3 times a year) and used to live in Sarasota. Lakewood Ranch is a planned community and didn't grow organically; as such, it has an artificial feel and doesn't seem like a "real" place with a history.

I used to live in Sarasota, which is just next door to Lakewood Ranch. The whole Bradenton-Sarasota-Lakewood Ranch area is really just one metropolitan area, and there are MANY planned neighborhoods in area that are well-manicured like Lakewood Ranch. The city of Venice (Sarasota County) is pleasant, too.

Tourism is the main economic driver of Sarasota. Much of the resident population is comprised of well-to-do retirees.
