This is wild, love it, going back to hu'u for the first time in 20yrs after extensive travel there for 90s..was no road to periscopes, haha.only the abandoned old periscopes losmen..you just walked from your accommodation all the way around the point.. Was only 4 places to stay in Lakey back then, Gatti,fatmas,lestari and 1 other place.. You could surf pipe by yourself every day. Was no local surfers yet. Was a wave ( not going to say north or south that hasn't been mentioned) we use to mission too, and I say mission..monkeys following you through the bush, snakes everywhere..oh it was epic Indo back then

Yep those were the days ah first trip was back in 89 and every year to 96 did neatly the full 2 month visa caught the pelni ship . You could sit in the right at the peak and get it to yourself when a few goofs were out . First time stayed at toddy tans joint then lestari after that . Never forget the overland trip by bus in 89 what an eye opener

@@scottkempton2018 oh mate I'm going to recreate the Overland trip from Bali this winter that's the part I miss the most about Indonesia I couldn't care less about flying straight into a surf camps. People get so wrapped up in the destination that forget about the journey. I had some amazing times at lestari billiard competitions what I believe to be one of the earliest games of beer pong I ever witnessed hahaha before beer pong was a thing cock fights on the beach with roosters we bought ourselves in dompu hahaha I remember one trip there in the 90s I surfed pipe by myself every day for 3 weeks

What do you do with scooter keys when you surf?
@SamWitness

Just left them in the side compartment of the bike most places, but if you have a loop on your boardies to tie it to / a zip up pocket that’s definitely better

Which platform did you use to book the accommodation? Because the two I have used say it costs 250 Australian dollars per night.

Let people figure this stuff out on Thier own dude. It's part of the learning curve. It's was kinda a nice place 20 years ago . Now people posting and telling others when to surf this spot and that spot . What tide, wind and where to sit. I mean are you for crowds and novice looks in your way. I guess so. Stop it.

Lakey peak’s community is now largely built on tourism and relies on it heavily now, so I see it as not only helping keen surfers have the best experience they can, but also helping the people at lakey peak have a better life. It’s not our break, I’m not going to localise it just because I’ve been there twice and act like it’s my secret. Selfish to worry about kooks and crowds… if you’ve seen Lakey Peak for yourself you know how badly the place needs the money from surfers.

Hey brother well yes and no to my opinion, it's always about balance. Some people search for remote places and untouched nature (including me) to find waves, that to my eyes make the beauty of surfing and way more exciting than over crowded spots. In early stages of development, not many locals rely on tourism, and it's never a good thing to rely on tourism fully because when there's crazy things like corona, then you lose it all. And when a place get a bit of a hype, then it will attract even more locals to come, to build a business, to potentially sell a land etc etc. The danger here is that there are almost no rules in Indo for lands and projects, it's all about who will bet more. If you look at how other surf breaks in Indonesia are developing, there's nothing to be thrilled about, maybe you think you're helping local community by sharing on KZbin all the tips, but would you have the same opinion if in 5 years Lakey is all sold to big real estate companies building high resorts 50m from the break ? Do you think the amazing families you met would stay when all is sold, when there is no more nature and soul ? That's already happening in Bali, Lombok and all the closeby islands in just a few months. Of course you want to share amazing experiences to friends, family, I think it's human, but why to Internet, why tagging the location on Instagram, and mass tourism ? There is nothing right about mass development, it will just attract greedy investors and turn the locals you love, homeless. The taxi in BIMA is a mafia since so many years, the 'I will put your board on the roof' and ask you for money and the taxi would not leave until you pay is a RIP OFF, and you comment just give the money it's a few bucks, man I'm not sharing your vision at all, if it's so easy to rip off people and you say just give the money how much they will rip you off next time ? Not even mentioning all the people on KZbin making money from blogs and sharing spots pretending to help local communities, strange world brother, hope my thoughts on this topic would at least make people think :) Peace @@SamWitness

They don’t need the tourism bro. They don’t need it to turn into Bali. It’s easy to say it will never turn into Bali but who would have thought Bali would be like it is today 20 years ago. Bali locals want to leave Bali. They are gutted at what it has become. Are you really doing it to help people? Or are you doing it for views and likes. I think views and likes. You’re free to do that but you should at least be aware that you’re contributing to the gentrification of this beautiful place and don’t pass it off as helping the locals because they need tourism…. When tourism comes like it came in Bali there will only be tears. Just forget about the likes and views and enjoy the place within your heart and share it with your friends while having a beer. No need to make videos like these. It’s hard to defend it in any way. You seem like a nice guy but very naive.

Clueless mate. Many, many people have moved from other islands for the opportunities available in Bali. Look no further than Bronson Meydi who left his family in lakeys and moved to bali in hopes of a professional career in surfing
