Babies need to move their tongues on all directions: up and down, in and out, and side to side. We can help teach babies to love their tongues with gentle exercises. Never force the exercises try to do them when baby is in a happy, awake/alert state. Stop if baby becomes fussy.

It basically means the tongue has limited range of motion due to being connected to the bottom of the mouth too tightly by the sublingual membrane. It can affect speech, too, if severe and left untreated.

All babies do these things as an automatic reflex. Or if they don't, there's something wrong. These reflexes are checked in the hospital right after birth. Google "What reflexes do infants display?"

Babies are born knowing how to suckle. I have seen some belly crawl up Mom's to breast and feed right after birth. Humans are mammals, and it's is natural. All artificial, medical interference is often as harmful as helpful. More naturalization is needed, and medical is good to have available when needed as it may be required for both mother and child.

Yes babies are born knowing how to do many things but the medicalization of birth as well as interventions after birth and genetic factors like tongue tie can all interrupt the natural process. These exercises help stimulate the natural reflexes to help babies improve their feeding when it’s been interrupted

Babies have a suck reflex for the first few weeks after birth. We can take advantage of the reflex in the early weeks after birth. Once the reflex integrates, the baby has to choose to suck.

Hello, can the suck get better with training even if we don't release the tie? Did you mean cotton or bottle? In the '70s when I had my 6, 5 living children; they insisted on giving my babies bottles. This made them refuse to nurse because milk comes out of a bottle easier. Jackie would have starved herself rather than nurse & thru horrible fits. I finally gave up at 4 mts. I only used a bottle for water & many parents don't realize that babies get thirsty, especially bottle fed babies. I insisted on no bottle in hospital to my Dr's. w 6th & finally wá able to successfully nurse her until 18mts when she started biting me!

A very careful washed scrubbed finger will do the same job with sticking latex in the infants mouth

As a hospital trained healthcare provider, yes, theoretically you could stick your washed finger in a baby’s mouth. But this is not my baby. It’s my patient. And wearing gloves is still standard care for medical employees when working in other people’s mouths. Yes, I have the parents just wash their hands and use a clean finger. This is a one time demonstration to the family.
