Several years ago we were going to do the train but told it wasn't as good as the bus tour. We had a 7 hour day where the bus took us through the pass. We saw a bunch of wildlife and the tour guide stopped for photo ops. We had lunch in a little Dutch restaurant on top and got to go see Emerald Lake. It was an amazing day and so worth it. The train seems like the best idea to a lot of people, but we took a van tour that took us where the train goes and even farther into Canada. Since it was a van and not a train the driver stopped and let us get out at scenic overlooks along the way. We also had lunch and saw a place where they trained sled dogs in the summer. It was a fun day with such beautiful scenery.

There are excursions that do both! We took a bus up and a train down and thought it was the perfect combo. Thanks for the video and time. Going on RC Ovation of the Seas cruise in May 2023. Got a Black Friday deal on train. 121 a person. But you’re video gave me an aha moment. I can barely sit through a movie. My tailbone doesn’t always cooperate. Don’t like being crammed with other people and no where to tape out or stretch body. So I canceled. You saved me 260 out the door and probably the same feelings I would have had after the train ride . My wife was not sure about the train ride too. You are the only one on you tube and Facebook that has given this type of review. Lol. Everyone raves and not one person has a wrinkled nose about it. Even my father in law and girlfriend who have been on it and that will be cruising with loved it. But me and wife are a bit different. So if we do want to see sites we’ll take shuttle or something which gives more freedom and stops. The cruise itself is an excursion for us. Anyways. You took the time to do this video I wanted to take the time to say thanks.

I did the train ride seven years ago. We got off around an hour into the trip and we did some hiking along with two guides. It was a ship tour- Train and hiking combo. There was only six of us with the guides. It was more gruelling than advertised. At one point on the return trip I lost my footing and almost went down a hill and into the rapids… We got back to the train- all dusted up and tired. We joined other folks on their way back to Skagway from their pleasant train ride…We looked out of place…Like we had been through a battle or something… But it was fun, nonetheless.

We had no plans coming into Skagway. We had considered the railway but was sold out when we finally decided. We walked around and found a bus tour place. Best decision! I can't remember the company but it was cheaper than the train. Took us twice as far as the train and our guide would stop whenever we wanted to look at the scenery. Oh and on our bus there were six people total! It went north the same direction as the train just by road. Turned out to be one of our favorite things we did on our Alaskan cruise.

My favorite parts of Skagway are the cemetery tour (where you hear about local gunslingers in the gold rush era), the Red Onion Saloon (a brothel), and other things like land tours. I love trains, and the WP&YRR trip is nice, but to really see the best parts you have to take the longer tour, which takes you into the Yukon, which you can't do right now because of Canada's restrictions and covid. Also, we took a fast ferry to Haines, which is close by and really neat with lots of native houses and totem, and old cannery, and beautiful scenery

A lot depends on your interests & if anyone bothered to provide background for you. I also found the train a bit boring on our first cruise 21 years ago. On a later trip to Skagway we wandered through town & found a little museum that displayed what the 1,000 pounds of equipment each miner had to have with him in order to cross over the border into Canada's Yukon Territory. Seeing all that stuff & realizing that most of those men had to climb the very inhospitable Chilkoot Trail multiple times carrying about 50 pounds each trip made me appreciate the ruggedness of the terrain and how tough and determined those guys were. It wasn't a very scenic ride, but with some background information the train trip made more sense.

@ArlynnsCountryCraftCorner3 жыл бұрын
My favorite time to do that tour is in May when there is still snow on the mountains. Chilkoot Charters is a great company and they do a Yukon Bus and Rail trip (of course this time you couldn't go into Canada because of the border being closed), but, in a normal year, you take the train up and into Canada, then hop on the 25 passenger bus and ride further up and into the Yukon learning all about the gold rush on the White Pass & Chilkoot Trails, about the 1-ton of goods folks needed to carry to the border before they'd be allowed to cross, stopping at Caribou Crossing where there are puppies and cart rides offered, a rustic lunch, a museum, and more. Also, Emerald Lake is not to be missed, a stop at the iconic "Welcome to Alaska" & "Welcome to the Yukon" signs, and you are dropped off back in Skagway. You can also do the tour in the reverse, bus up train back down. Princess offers a similar tour, difference is they use motor coaches. Another fun tour is Kroschel's Wildlife Center--you take the Haines Fast Ferry over to Haines and then a bus on up to the Center; excellent excursion.

We cruised to Alaska August 2019 and did an excursion most wouldn't think of doing in Alaska. We went snorkeling in Ketchikan! We had very snug wetsuits on to keep us somewhat warm. If La Lido Loca would check out Cruise Tips TV and Sheri's version of this trip on the White Pass; it's educational, the cinematography is amazing and the effort really is evident. If you boys got up off your seat and used proper equipment to do your film work and put voice overs on the edit it could make a big difference; and you had better weather on your excursion than Sherri did. When you bother to get up and do photography from the ends of the car you get great shots. What I saw you do in Skagway was walk around without entering anything but a souvenir shop. I heard no history, and little substantive commentary other than comments about the wind. Those rock paintings have bunches of content. Try harder next time. I also saw very little about the Majestic Princess as a ship; this was more like a 'boy's week walkabout.'

It has a stream running through it and in late August the banks should be knee deep in spawning Salmon! It's a beautiful place, although I can't remember the name of it( It might be the Deya Valley). Also there is Horseback riding, rafting & the city tours & foodie themed excursions as well as excursions to Haines. You won't have any trouble finding something else to do. I was on an excursion that took the train to the first stop and then we walked along the river going upstream. There were 3 ships in port that day and my ship only had 5 people on the excursion and we combined all of the people from the 3 ships and the 3 guides. Someone from my ship couldn't walk very fast and I don't want to walk fast because I want to take pictures. The 3 of us from our ship and our guide walked in at least a mile and turned around and enjoyed the views of the river as we walked. When we got back to the station to wait for our pick up, our guide took us down the access road to go under the RR bridge to the river. We waved at the many trains that went by. I enjoyed being a part of the train's scenery, more than I would have enjoyed just being on a train. So they do have an excursion like the one you hoped for and don't be put off by the 5 mile hike, it is a out and back and we just turned and went back sooner than the other two groups.

Skagway is a great little port. I took the train to Carcross Yukon. The view opens up when you get further north into Canada. Try coming back when the COVID mess has improved.

I saw the tree behind you and wondered when they brought palm trees to Alaska :) Great video. So looking forward to seeing Skagway next August!

If you do the 8 hour excursion that takes you up into the Yukon, that is a great one. You take the train and then a bus. I can see that just the train up and back could be a bit boring.
