The Miura is my all time favorite Lamborghini. Back in the 70’s when I was in the USAF I was sent to the LA area for training and on the weekend I visited the Briggs Cunningham Auto Museum. One of the cars there was a Pearl white Miura which was claimed to be Mrs Cunningham’s personal car. Beautiful car that has stayed with me the rest of my life. Dan Gurneys Spa winning Eagle F-1 car was in there being restored. In my opinion the most beautiful Formula One car ever!

Thanks for all your great videos! In the August 1964 edition of Road and Track magazine they have good article about this engine. There is a four photograph sequence showing the crankshaft starting out as a 200lb. billet progressively lathed down to the 54.5 lb. finished product.

Had to smile at the cylinder to piston clearance part. Way back in the late 60' early 70s I used to thrash my Mini engines, and one time when I lifted the head off to see why I had no power, I could see the crankshaft through the gap between the piston and cylinder. In those days with that simple stuff you could get the engine out easily and have it rebored and the crank reground at any number of workshops in the UK. New bearings and pistons and whatever else I could reassemble in a few hours and the car would be ready in no time.

Another reason you shouldn’t let any engine (but especially carburettor ones) idle cold - rich moisture and large piston clearance jsut washes oil off the bores and dumps fuel into the sump. Start and drive off as soon as the carburettors are behaving - which should be immediately if it’s tuned well. And if course if it’s injected you’re good to go straight away. Don’t beat on it obviously, but putting some load on it gets it warm faster.

I nerd like have a fascinating book on the Rolls Royce Merlin engine in its various forms.Big end shells are a significant part .The engine in the early days "hated" running low revs and the big end shells burned out pretty swiftly.I think they turned to a bronze/nickel alloy?

Iain, I don't think you mentioned the milage on this engine, or how or if it was smoking out the exhaust? Not to question your shops abilities but you also failed to show or mention valve stem to valve guide wear - and valve seal condition. That is probably more a reason for oil consumption than ring failure. Valve seals are a consumable. Great presentation as usual and a great detailed look into a rare exotic. A treat for enthusiasts. ✌️ 🇺🇲

@@mark4lev Cost of tooling up for it. At the sort of production numbers that Lambourghini is concerned with, they were better off producing billet cranks.
