Lamborghini has a small, interesting, and also disastrous track record at the 24h of Le Mans. Since they'll be racing in hypercar class in 2024 it's time to take a look at all the raging bulls that have ever competed in the iconic race and the ones that never even made it to the grid.

I usually don't really care if people mispronounce a car name, at least if it's consistent with the way most people of their country pronounce it (looking at you, America.) It gets more than a bit pretentious when someone who is clearly not Italian or French or German, who then tries to pronounce the words like an Italian but has no idea what they're doing.

I remember JLOC were pretty heavily criticised in 2009. The Eurosport commentators were pretty certain it was a start and park. They were saying JLOC wanted to elevate the value and status of the car itself, by being able to say "it ran in the 24 Hours of Le Mans", which is why they did little to no running, rather than the "mechanical failures" the team accused.

FINALLY, THE UNLUCKY IS OVER A good 5 position in LMGT3 from Iron Dames and a very respectful good race on Hypercars (with the two cars finish, without any huge problems) Finally, after many years, Lamborghini finished Le Mans in a good position, hope for more progress and a better 24H of Le Mans in 2025.

I know virtually nothing about motorsport. However, I personally think that Lamborghini could stand to invest more in function over form. The iconic wedge shape is cool, but it shouldn't have to be to the car's detriment aerodynamically. Still, it's very interesting how a globally well-known automaker hasn't historically done well in one of motorsports' most prestigious events...

To be fair, Count Lamborghini (is he referred as Count?) really wanted to build fast cars for people like, say, Nicky Minaj, Sam Smith etc. in the first place. And that mindset still remains to this day regardless of how extreme their mass marketed lineups are

Because the founder Feruccio Lamborghini was not a person who was keen on racing compared to other Italian brands like Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Lancia. Feruccio Lamborghini saw motorsport as too draining on company resources. This policy stayed for decades. In many ways parent companies that owned Lamborghini like Chrysler and Audi/Volkswagen forced it go racing but it wasnt Lamborghini itself as they outsourced it to privateers. Lamborghini going into racing is pretty new now they are becoming successful in GT3 but have a long way to go. Ferraris motorsport laurels date back to the 1920s we are talking about Ferrari being a racing team before they start building their own cars. Even if Lamborghini wins imsa, wec and lemans. It will be a good success for them but compared to Ferrari they still have a long way to go to even consider rivalling Ferrari in motorsport achievements.

well iron lynx has already made the move to lamborghini in gt3 so its 99.99% sure they'll be at lemans with a lambo gt3 and lmdh, then there are numerous teams who've made it clear they wanna do lemans as well in a gt3 huracan, one of which being JLOC even!

@@itsdokko2990 Zonda GR, a couple organizations got rights to develop the C12 for racing, so it wasn't a factory effort. It looks like it's mainly been entered into a German DMV racing series at the Hockenheimring. You can find some good in-car and drive-by footage on KZbin just by searching Zonda GR. A non-factory team also tried entering the GR in LeMans in something like 2003 but its transmission failed after only a few laps.

That first story was tragic, poor guy! Seems like Lamborghini are on the right track now. The Gallardo was decent enough in its GT3 form, but the Huracan has proved to be a really competent racecar (it's won at Daytona and Sebring, among other accomplishments!) Between their LMDH and the arrival of GT3s to Le Mans in a couple years, they might finally stand a chance!

What's up with the repeated driveshaft failures? Something fishy going on there. Did they keep using the same driveshaft? Surely they would have sourced a new one form a different supplier after the first couple of failures. Mechanical issues aside, the big V12 Lambos were never suited for racing. While they might look somewhat aerodynamic at first glance, they have a very blocky, angular design that causes drag. The high placement of the huge engine in the chassis means that center of gravity is higher up than the competition, making it less agile and failing to use the advantages of a ME layout properly. Its a shame because this car and the Maranello were the last cars to run a proper V12 at top level motorsport. (Audi's diesel V12 doesn't count)

The LMDh will fair a lot better since the entire program is only partially lead by Lamborghini. Ligier design the chassis and hybrid system is Bosch and WAE. So I foresee that the brand will do a lot better than any of their previous attempts. But, just saying this will have cursed them. So I apologise Lamborghini.

Lamborghini were also an engine supplier in formula 1 between 1989 and 1993. Their mostly failed :/

The team was the problem not their magnificent Engine! During those years like you said they was an engine supplier. They supplied Budwiser their V-12 Countach Engine to be used in power boat racing. Those V-Tunnel Hull type boats that goes really fast on water. Budwiser experienced maybe 2 to 4 years in a row world championship by using the Legendary Lamborghini V-12 Countach Engine. It was a complete opposite. A V-12 Engine made to power road going super cars. An engine made for land travel. Some privateers used their supercars to go racing in the racing circuits. But when they supplied Budwiser their V-12 Engine for power boat racing, the racing team won world championships where as their customers who went racing on land with their supercars experienced nothing but a disastruous results!

Times have changed, now it's 2024, Lamborghini now have a factory backed motorsports division, "Squadra Corse". In this year's Le Mans, the two SC63s finished 10th and 13th overall in their first LM outing, with only a few minor incidents and no serious reliability issues. The two Huracans also finished, most notably the Iron Dames car in 4th position in LMGT3 after battling for the lead for the most of the race, but a few racing incidents cost them heavily. As a lifelong Lamborghini fan, I can proudly say that Lamborghini is now becoming a major player in GT and Prototype racing 🙂

3 things held back Lamborghini from entering the expensive and extreme world of Motorsport the most expensive sport of all! The first thing you said was the founders interests, Ferruccio had this rule to never go racing! Lamborghini changed hands a few times from the 70's until the late 90's! From the Mimram Family, to Walter Wolf, to Chrysler, to Megatech Corporation the Prince of Suharto Indonesia owned Lamborghini for several years then finaly AUDI in 1998! This is because they lack money! And third LACK OF SPONSORS! Instead of Lamborghini to be supposedly the first one to be intersted to race, priveteers like the Japanese Lamborghini Owners Club (J-LOC) and a few more priveteers where the ones who had the balls to attempt to race their Lamborghini Supercar! Yes these are all a continuous string of BAD LUCK! But in anything you choose to do, you cannot just rely with your people, sponsors, money and skills, YOU ALSO NEED LUCK TO WIN!

Oh so I'm not the only one who noticed Lamborghini sucks at motorsports back then. I know I sound like a hater, but its true. Ever since I've heard and learned about the QVX, JGTC countach, JGTC Diablos, FIA GT Diablos and all of the racing murcielagos and now with the 60s lambos. I've notice that lady luck was shooting them constantly from 60s - 00s... 40 years of motorsport failures.

Transmission failures before 150 laps? Tires failing? These aren't small flaws but glaring issues that separate the pretenders from champions. Well, maybe it's not bad luck. I think it has something to do with the fact that Lamborghini cars are mostly a piece of (s)crap, at least to the moment when Audi arrived. Build quality, tuning, aerodynamics, handling... It just did not work properly.

Not Le Mans, but F1. People have talked about Lamborghini “returning” to F1, finally as a real team and constructor. I would love that, though, I don’t believe it will happen as they might be too afraid. Just too afraid to not start well off enough, and they end up in the last places “embarrassing” the brand and inevitably losing to Ferrari. Lamborghini is my favorite car manufacturer, so I would still love if they started in F1.

Yeah I definitely don't doubt them. modern race cars [while they don't have 1000's of horse power and go 300mph in a straight line any more] are built to handle punishment. And manufcature support today is most likely way more efficient for customers with plenty of spare parts and expert engineering advice. On top of that, the emphasis on preparation has never been stronger in motorsport. Motoring and motorsport go hand in hand and I think many Manufacturers who seriously want to compete in the performance car market know that applying themselves in motorsport can be beneficial to growth. Teething problems will always be a thing for most new race cars. But looking at Lambo's motoring efforts of the past decade I have faith thier LMDh car will adapt very well to the competition
