Living in New Hampshire, where our winters are almost always battery operated for a length of time, it sounds to me like she's got a smart mom-noodle. If you can lose power, chances are you will. If you have a basic necessity, ensure that: A. It can be replaced with a non-power consuming alternative or used without electricity B. You have a battery operated alternative C. You have a generator Those basically sum up the holy trinity of not only surviving, but thriving in winter.

If this were me, I'd bring my super-soft microfleece coat that's big enough to encompass two people, a battery powered hot-plate, pot, and an entire bag of rechargable heat packs. Plus whatever foods I could bring along with that I could cook, probably make Hoover Stew. It's not super tasty, but it *is* filling, and that much food in a belly warms up the body like little else.
