I still climb the tower in my village church to wind the clock every week. I love doing it.

I find it a little sad when these mechanisms are replaced by modern ones. I'm glad it's still tolling the hours, but sad that it's no longer keeping the 'real' clock time.

That old clock has been decimated. A tragedy.

Way to go Mr. Jackson!! this was quite interesting...I enjoyed most of all the ringing of the bell!

The clock definitely needs attention. The bell, needs even more. The movement in the bell, which is obvious in the video concerns me more. The bell is loose in the mount and the frames are loose in their mount. It moves way to easy when it is struck.

Escapement is not set properly. It is recoiling and should not as it is a deadbeat type.

Yes - if the pallets were moved in a little the teeth would not be hitting the impulse section. Maybe the idea of a larger swing was disliked. The whole thing is puzzling! Thanks for drawing our attention to that. I should have seen that, but I have only just got up!. Seth would have been indignant - " It`s a deadbeat - why have you set the pallets like that?" I wonder how long it has been running that way.

I would love to know why we don’t hear the bell while the mechanism is running. I am assuming the bell is too far away to hear.

Looks like the escapement pallets need adjusted-I see the escape wheel teeth dropping onto the impulse faces of the pallets and not the locking faces. You can see the escape wheel recoil as the pendulum overswings.

The entry pallet look OK, just the exit pallet needs work.

Yes, exit pallet needs adjustment. I am horologist from Mumbai, India, maintaining two tower clocks.

The ticking also seems like it should be a little quieter. A somewhat similar tower clock with an escapement like this (kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2GpZKR9YpWfr5I) is MUCH quieter. The pallets may have just worn down, and instead of trying to fix the escapement, they just added a heavier weight. This is just a guess.

This is the only clock I have ever worked on. I am not a clock mechanic. I don’t even know the language they speak. My policy is to leave it alone and don’t break it. I oil it once and awhile and I reset the time about once a month. It generally runs about ten minutes fast per month. Whenever I try to adjust that it runs ten minutes slow and so on. It easier for me to reset the time when it gets too far out of time. It has been running without any other adjustments for about 15 (maybe more) years now. The gathering pins (is that what they are called?) are about worn out and I am still waiting on a machinist to make replacements. There are other signs of wear that concern me. Maybe there is too much weight on the bell side of the movement. I am seeing wear on the large bell side ratchet. The clock is there today because two local craftsmen took on the job of restoring it which means they looked for or manufactured the parts they could not find. What they did is way beyond my skills. Years later the courthouse was restored and the clock was moved to an off center location that would require a more complicated set of drive rods. Too many angles involved. It was too complicated for the professional hired to do the job. When he was done the clock did not run for very long. I think he wanted a maintenance contract so he could keep his substandard work going. Perhaps a flexible shaft would have worked but where would we get one 90 feet long? It would have to be custom made and then it might not work. In any event the mechanism is not in the tower which is not opened to the public and because of all the news mechanical features of the restored courthouse (that is where they hid the air conditioner units) it would be difficult to get to. The attic has become more like a crawl space. I do the best I can. Occasional I ask for help.

> the clock was moved to an off center location Bad decision. The mechanism should remain where it can do its job, not be placed and then have to figure out how to make it work. I know that likely wasn't your call.
