For more information about my work go to : / colinrichardsonglass The pieces in this video were done in soft glass (96 COE) constructed over a GTT Lynx and assembled on a hotplate (approx 400F) using a Smith "Little Torch".

I’m always so amazed that all the air bubbles are gone around such intricate pieces and that the heat of the clear doesn’t move the delicate thin glass.

One of the nice things about Schott crystal is that you can anneal pretty quickly. For a mini (2 - 2.5 inch dia.) the cycle goes: Hold 1000F for 3 hours Ramp down to 900F at 20 degrees/hr Hold 900F for 1 hour Ramp down to 720F at 40 deg/hr Hold 720F for 1 hour Ramp down to 400F at 75 deg/hr Hold 400F for 30 minutes Heat off. For a standard size weight (3-3.25") it's: 1000F for 3 hrs, down to 900F @ 17/hr, hold 1hr, down to 720 @ 30/hr, hold 1hr, down to 400 @ 45/hr, hold 30 min, heat off.

The torch is a Smith "Little Torch". I use a #4 tip most of the time, but there are several different tips to produce a larger or smaller flame. I use a scientific hotplate with a 1/2 inch plate of stainless steel on top of it. The scientific hotplate has a higher max temperature than most kitchen models, and makes for more even heat. The steel plate can withstand the heat of the torch and is easily cleaned with steel wool and a wire brush.

I've been trying to do more detailed work like that but I never seem to be able to heat an area that small without melting the detail around it, I can't get the angle right as it's difficult to see how it is in retaliation to the flame, any tips? My depth perception is not very good when working with it behind the torch, especially with the shades and I would be grateful for any tips
