I have started with Lamy Al Stars! I have 5 and a Lamy Studio as a present. I absolutely love them. I haven’t tried the line and wash with the non waterproof ink yet. You make those look so easy! Really like the videos!

I like the tip about the syringe, thank you. I have had occasional issues with the Platinum carbon bleeding a bit when WC is applied over it. It seems to be a function of the paper, I think. I dunno, maybe I just didn't let it sit for long enough before trying to apply a wash. However, in general, I love the ink. This was an interesting intro to the Lamy pens, I may have to get one and try it. Thank you for the insight.

I think that maybe it wasn't quite dry. I've had zero issues with bleed. I always give my drawing a quick blast with a Hairdryer before painting. Especially if there are think lines. These seem to take an age to dry without some hairdrying. 👍

Very interesting video, I have used fountain pens for some years as I dabble with calligraphy. But needed to get the left handed nibs, so it is very good that Lamy cater for left handed people.

This pen comes with purple ink which is halarious but i have the recommended permanent black to switch it up. Ordered the converter also. Plus my friend who is INTO blue in all ways i ordered the blue for her birthday!

I love my Lamy! Reporting back…first off the “purple” ink my purple pen came with was a weird blue. No biggie..but it didnt flow great..i tossed it and immediately got out the converter i ordered and filled it with Carbon black permanent. No looking back. It flows so smoothly. I have refilled it once and this pen doesnt miss a beat. I really like it.

Very informative video. Thanks. Thanks for the tip about the syringe. Great idea. I am new to fountain pens. I did some research and decided on the Safari. So in April, I went to the local art store which had a nice display of Lamy's. While I was deciding on the color, a white/silver Lamy AL-Star called to me. That's what I took home. (Essentially, it's the same pen as the Safari with an aluminum body.) Now maybe someone can enlighten me about this hobby: How did I wind up with five Lamys already? 😁 I think they all were special editions at one time. BTW, on some web sites, the "B" nib is referred to as "Broad."

Great video, nicely explained. I had this one question. I have 2 choices in lamy, one is the demonstrator pen and the other is the opaque pen. I love the demonstrator, but it feels like the plastic is unsturdy and will crack or break in long term. Which one should i go for as a beginner.

Just choose whatever colour you prefer. They will all work the same 👍😁👍

Apart from using cartridges it easy just to carry a couple of different pens with different inks. That's what I do. 😁

Thanks for a great video Doug. I have been considering buying a Lamy Safari as a first drawing fountain pen and your explanation has helped no end. As a left hander I have never found it easy to get anything for my sinister self; not even a pair of scissors, never mind a pen. A couple of questions: do I choose my choice of nib with my order and where would I purchase the syringe you acquired?

Glad it was helpful! I know in the UK you can specify the nib on purchase and even the Sinister varient. Cult Pens is the store I've used. The syringe was bought in ebay I think. I got three for a fiver.

Yes you can. You might want to rinse it with some clean water first. You can even reuse disposal ink cartridges too.

I generally just use what's to hand and filled at the time. I've definitely been using the yellow one a lot more for re ent vids just because its so bright and cheerful 😊
