I’ve reviewed both of these pens on my channel! I prefer the Safari, and have a few issues with the design of the Metro, but I still think it’s a good pen. On my metropolitan review, people were pretty quick to defend it. I personally thought I would hate the Safari until I held it in my hand. Such a simple design, but totally worth the price!

The Metropolitan was my first fountain pen, and I love it! But... I own more Safaris and use them more often. Maybe it’ll the heft of the metal, but my two Metros feel like special occasion pens, while my Safaris feel like everyday-in-the-purse pens. If someone asked me which they should get, I think I’d ask them what they wanted the pen for. If they want a nice pen on their desk, Metro wins easily. If it’s for rougher use, the Safari.

I have both. I rotate my pens monthly, with each pen with a different ink color. It's easier to distinguish the months in my bullet journal that way. Each has their up and downs. I like the Lamy's triangular grip and I like how the pilot feels in my hand. I prefer the italicized nub of the pilot over the lamy because it's smaller when writing in my 1917.

I just saw this. My first pen was a Pilot Metropolitan! I have to give it credit - its what got me hooked on fountain pens! I do have a Lamy Al-Star which I also love and the nib selection is a huge factor. I do wish pilot would release their nibs separately. But both pens are a staple for me. The PM stole my heart first though. Will never let either pen out of my collection! ❤️❤️❤️

So I buy a pen to write. I don't get into collecting the same thing over and over just because it is a different color. I have a large collection of pens that includes Pilot and Lamy. I find the Japanese pens to be superior in all categories. I have a number of their custom and heritage pens and use them daily. Safari wins for me, because I'm generally not a fan of heavy pens. The range of replaceable nibs is also a very nice touch. I try not to be too brand loyal, because it's a sure way of getting stung. But if I were to pick one brand where it's hard to go too wrong, it would probably be Lamy.

I've got a Safari as well as a Pilot Prera (same nib as the Metropolitan), and the Pilot writes significantly better. The Safari (medium nib) for me lays down less ink at the beginning of a letter, and about halfway through, the line gets heavier. You can see it in this video with the writing sample at 5:56, and even the Lamy writing sample at JetPens, and I've seen it in other YT writing sample vids. None of that happens with the Pilot, in my very limited experience. I do still like the feel and weight and look of the Safari and use it regularly at work, and will double down on flushing the nib and feed when this cartridge empties in case that helps. But I am definitely team Pilot for new fountain pen enthusiasts who just want something that writes perfectly without fiddling.

Metropolitan (more exactly, Pilot MR Euro version). Because: 1) it's not triangular; 2) it's all-metal body; 3) in Euro version, it supports international standard cartridges or converters; 4) Pilot's F/EF nibs really write fine/extra-fine, no deception. If we compare to the Al-Star instead, the number 2 can be replaced with 2) Pilot MR is less expensive.

The Safari was created for German school kids as we all learned to write cursive with a fountain pen back in the 80s. So no instruction or converter needed as there were only ink cartridges available back then for these fountain pens. Unless you had one with a built in small tank to fill from a bottle.

Didn’t see many comments on the Metro converters. What came with mine was this cheesy squeeze converter. I replaced it with a Con-50 then since that did not work well, the Con-40, only marginally better. It’s one thing to include a converter with the purchase of a pen, but certainly not much of a perk if it’s crappy. None of my Metro converters have leaked, they simply don’t draw much ink into their body.

The Safari deal breaker is that they are an absolute bear to clean. The feed CAN be pulled, but at great risk and it is definitely not for a new user. If the nib AND feed can't be pulled, it makes the pen too much of a nuisance properly to maintain.
@michellestephenson1680
@michellestephenson1680 3 жыл бұрын
I have no problem with them. I just use a bulb syringe to flush a lot of water through the feed quickly, and converters could be replaced if they get too bad to bother with. So far that has not been a problem.
@jacobus57
@jacobus57 3 жыл бұрын
@@michellestephenson1680 I use a bulb syringe as well, but it's a poor substitute for being able thoroughly to clean and dry the feed and section, especially if one uses saturated ink. Over time there is build up. I see it in pens with removable feeds that I don't pull every time I clean them. I know people love them, but for me it's a fatal flaw.

I live in Europe, and here, Pilot pens are insanely overpriced. The Metropolitan here is actually more expensive than the safari (20€ vs 30€ in some places), and it uses standard international format, is only available in medium and doesn't include a converter. I'm I'm Portugal and I feel like I'm forced to get the Safari too lol I mean it doesn't gets explained in Amazon if the pen comes with the converter or not. There's no actual info on the nib availability too, on another hand I know I need a converter for the Lamy and that I can get at least 6 different nibs if I need or want too... but I must say that what's bothering me is that the M nib on the Lamy looks really fat and F barely changes at all. Also most reviews say that the EF nib scratches too much...
@Alvenrik1
@Alvenrik1 Жыл бұрын
@@virtual_self I have a few Lamy nibs, and... Lamy doesn't really do fine lines at all. There so little difference between F and EF that some F are finer than an EF. A dry ink and ink resistant paper like oxford, clairefontaine or rhodia helps.

I opted for the Vista demonstrator because I can change nibs, the Pilot does not. For that reason, I'll never get a Pilot. It seems the more expensive the pen, the uglier it gets.

I disagree completely. The Safari doesn’t write nearly as well as the Metropolitan. Colors aren’t as important as the smooth writing style. I’ve given six or seven Metropolitan pens out and only one Safari to my grown son which I tried and hated. To say that it wins the shootout is only an opinion, not concluding a true winner. I continue to use my Metropolitan even though I’ve graduated on to Pineider and Pelikan pens. So while others may prefer the Safaris, for me, the comparison isn’t even close. And I’m an older person with arthritis in my hands and it doesn’t matter that the Safari is lighter; the Metropolitan is smoother and the little bit of weight is insignificant.

Always and forever the Lamy Safari. It's what I use for my 5th-grade students when I teach cursive because of the grip, balance, and comfort. Its weight is perfect for young hands that need to build small motor skills and stamina, is funky enough looking for a kid to love it, and unique enough for the pen to stand out from others. I had one student who told me his father tried to steal his Lamy Safari once because he loved the feel of it and my student demanded he give it back, "Or Ms. H will kill me when we do cursive!" :D (Dad emailed me to ask where I got it so he could order his own and ended up with an AL Star.) The ink cartridges are a great no fuss/no mess feature in the classroom. I love my Pilot Fude for drawing, but my everyday work horse will always be a Lamy Safari.

I know this comment was left months ago, but I'm just running across it. I teach 4th grade and have been reading about how fountain pens can be helpful with students who have "messy" handwriting. How do you handle fountain pens class-wide? Do you buy each student his/her own? (That's a bit pricey, but I'm guessing it might make a good Donor's Choose project.) Do they keep them after they leave your class, or do you reuse them from year to year? I'd love to try this with a few of my students who are struggling with those nasty scratchy pencils.

Now I’m waiting for my first Metro. Didn’t use it for years, but -> -> Those “wet” M nibs are better for some inks that are too bright for F nibs, for example Ferris Wheel Press “Lady Rose”. Ps. I started with the Metro and now have four. Love them. Then I tried Lamy and have three. Both are terrific. Metro wins with value... Safari wins with style and "coolness!"

I have and own them both, and both are great starter pens as well as pens that often put their expensive brothers to shame. But my heart belongs to the Metropolitan, for she is the one who wore the first stub nib I have ever had. A good friend of mine gifted it to me and I have loved every minute I have spent with it.

I write small so the Pilot Metropolitan fine nib is perfect. I have also found that the Pilot fine nib writes smoother and has better ink flow than my Safari with a extra fine nib. Have a great day Tom.

A Lamy Safari fountain pen with it's _"tripod grip"_ is great to teach people - _adults and children_ - to hold the pen the correct way! I know fountains are great for writing, and writing style - mostly- improves. However, sometimes a ball point/roller ball pen is a must! There is now a ball point/roller ball pen that uses a converter and uses fountain pen ink, *The Best of both worlds* _(not Star Trek)!_

But the Lamy goes to 1.1! It's got .1 more ya see. I mean with the Pilot you're at 1, and where do you go from there? Lamy goes to 1.1! (P.S. Lamy nibs FTW!)

Thank you! I will always have a soft spot for the Safari but I would prefer the matte versions as the body does not get scratched up like the glossy ones. The Metro is great, as it comes with a metal body, convertor and has a proper fine nib. The fine nib is better than the Safari whose Medium and Fine are not much different. But the section of the Metro is a tad small for me.

Lamy Safari. They write better, look better, are reliable, have a wider choice, better converters, and feel good in the hand.

The most important consideration besides price in this comparison is the nib selection. If you are at all interested in the quality of the nib, you have to choose the Metropolitan. Japanese nibs are superior, especially in F and EF. The finer side of the spectrum is owned by the Japanese, because their writing characters demand it. I love my Metropolitans for their writing accuracy. The Metro is more pen than you are paying for. It is not only worth it's own price, it is worth the Safari's price.

I don’t like the look of the Safari, so its Metropolitan for me. I own three Metros. These are good pocket pens for daily carry (receipts, quick notes, etc.) I do have a Lamy Studio and a Lamy 2000; both of which are excellent.

I totally agree with you about the look of the Safari, plus if I am getting a fountain pen I prefer it to have minimal amounts of plastic. I have two Jinhao 450s and am planning on getting the Metropolitan in both the stub and fine since it looks like one of the best “budget” FPs and I would rather get several reliable writers and splurge on ink than immediately splurge on pens

I think it mostly comes down to your grip preferences. I use four of my fingers so the Safari is very uncomfortable for me. Personally, I'm actually a bigger fan if the Diplomat Magnum. Not sure if I reccomend Twsbi for newcomers because they're filling mechanism is slightly more complex than the typical cartridge converter methods.

I have a twsbi go, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a refillable fountain pen that holds a lot of ink, be they beginners or more seasoned users. I like how it feels, although it is very fat compared to other pens I own, and I like how it writes. Very easy to clean out and refill as required.

Oof. I’m team both? I have four metros, one safari, one vista, and two al-stars. So... yeah. The recent safari colors haven’t really grabbed me, but 2021 looks interesting. You definitely highlighted all the right points. Personal experience: the metro feels heavier, and the grip on the safaris is a little nicer for me (longer grip, no step). Then again, I like the medium nib on my metros very much. So it’s a toss up :D

I love my metro as a desk pen. If I looked hard enough to find a real complaint, it would be the small ink volume. And that's just depending on personal preference and how much you write. I love their fine nibs. So smooth. My only complaint is that band in the middle. lol Even the ones that are the same color. To me, it just disrupts the sleekness of the pen. I'd rather see the whole pen in a print design or solid color, instead of just that band. I've never tried a Lamy to be honest. Having to buy the converter separately is just a turn off for me.

A Fine nib Metro was my first, and I now also own a Metro with a Stub I received as a gift. I thoroughly love them both. I just recently got an Eco EF and it seems great. Filling and cleaning is very satisfying, though I digress. I am addicted now, and have many more plans for pens and writing adventures beyond my journaling and current attempt at writing a novel. Thank you for the great content as always.

I got a Lamy Safari (F) and hated it. It felt very scratchy. I also didn't care about the triangular shape. I don't need my pen to dictate how I hold it. My Hongdian Black Forest was so much better in every way that it wasn't even a comparison. I haven't gotten a Pilot pen yet because of their cartridges, but I'll probably get one any day now.
