Profound, underrated, classic, sad and beautiful film. Just as LDR is a profound, underrated, classic, sad and beautiful artist. This is by far Damon and Law's best film for both of them in my opinion. The film is a haunting work of meditation upon human psychology that can be understood by very few people. Usually only those who know, having observed and/or experienced, the depths of pain and sorrow that some humans go through, not only to hide who they are, but more so to hide the the greatest element of being human, love. Ripley was a man who loved a man in a world that would never accept who he was or his love. The world made him hide his heart and forced him to fit into its limited intelligence. This made him a monster who came to prey on members of the very society that made him hide who he was. Because he had to hide who he was to survive. Being made to kill one's own heart is a long and painful process. Ripley ended up killing the very people who made him hide who he was and who he loved. In the end he realized even when his love was finally returned, he would not be allowed to exist honestly as a human in that world. And so he had to kill his love and his heart completely. Throughout my own life, I have learned to appreciate and share in the suffering of others by putting myself in their shoes and lives with regards to what they experience by imaging what it would be like for myself were I to experience the same thing(s). If I lived in a world that made it so I could never have loved my girlfriend and then wife, a world that did not allow me to express that love and to be accepted as an equal and as valuable as others, in a world that actually forced me into a darkness where i could never even say I loved my wife because it was evil or ugly, in a world that often hated me for my heterosexuality, I too would most assuredly turn into some kind of monster. We can not force our fellow humans into darkness and expect them to not become tortured, suicidal or as some of them do, monsters who lash out at the real monsters, who have forced them into the darkness they create in this world.
