Lana del Rey deserves to be praised. In my opinion, she could handle the heavy burden of carrying our stories as millennials, this broken generation that went through a lot in a world that just won't stop giving us a break. There's no one but Lana who trailblazed a path for younger artists to be brave and presents stories that don't necessarily fit in the box of "standard love". You'll find stories of death, depression, love, atypical relationships, abuse and etc. within the folds of Lana's lyrical contents. Had it not been inspired by what she does, I would have never been able to put out an award winning film out there, inspired by her song "California", talking about how she navigating through Barrie's depression. But this album will always be where the feeling all starts.

I love that Lana´s platonic love in her videos aren´t normally beautiful hollywood guys. They are realistic people, sometimes older than her, sometimes from the same gender, or sometimes just not attractive in an orthodox way, and the video doesn´t have to change because of that. Art always sends a message. Whether it is what it is, it stands for something else, if it's just meant to never be understood, or maybe just to convey the artists feelings. Or maybe the artist was just bored. A world where art means nothing is not one I'd like to live in.

@babyblue68526 жыл бұрын
For me this song is about loving a person despite their cold personality. Here Lana is constantly pointing out how aloof and detach her ‘baby’ is, but despite this she’s in love with him and tries to change him (even though she can’t). She loves him despite his love of drugs, women, and his ‘strange weather’ (unpredictability). From the first verse, we can already tell that Lana’s ‘baby’ is a typical old Hollywood bad boy because he has the ‘blue eyes’ (cold gaze), ‘jazz’ (charisma), and ‘attitude’. She also points out that ‘he lives in California too’, assumably because there might’ve been loads of boys like him in California. But at the end at the verse even though this boy ‘lives for love’ (is a womanizer/sleeps around) and is also a drug addict, he still loves his ‘baby’ (Lana). In the pre-chorus, Lana mentions her frustration of not being able to ‘help’ her significant other and having the inability to ‘make him better’, this might be because of the boy’s ‘strange weather’ that she mentions at the end of the pre-chorus. Having a strange weather could mean having mood swings or constantly changing one’s desires and beliefs. In the chorus, she also mentions how being in a relationship with this person saddens her deeply because not only he is ‘unfixable’ (doesn’t want to change his ways), but she ‘can't break through’ his ‘world’, that could possibly mean despite her attempts of trying to understand him, she always ends up feeling lost because this ‘baby’ of hers lives in ‘shades of cool’ (his own world). Lana also says that her boy’s heart is unbreakable, this might be because he seems so detached and aloof, she feels as though he wouldn’t care if she leaves him or not. In the second verse, Lana further describes her ‘baby’. Not only does he live in his own world but he’s also has a cold heart (he’s detached, cold hands (he can be physical), and cold aptitude (he tends to be aloof in general). Now Lana is more pessimistic as she mentions how her boy lives for love (sex) and women, and how she just ‘one of many’, and the most shockingly of her boy’s lover’s is ‘blue’ (dead), Lana might’ve added this one bit to exaggerate how meaningless it is to be her boy’s girl because they’re all easily discarded and forgotten. Despite all this, Lana still believes that she’s special to her boy because the boy only ‘calls’ for her when he ‘calls’, this could be Lana’s way of saying that the boy only longs for her and thinks about her despite having many lovers. Lana also believes that he’s a good person inside because she mentions how the boy prays for ‘peace’ and ‘love’, but then Lana discreetly adds ‘and maybe someone new’, this could be her way of hinting the fact that she doesn’t feel secure in the relationship because she feels as though her ‘baby’ might find her replacement one day. Despite her beliefs of being his special ‘baby’, she also realizes that she might not be special to him for long because of his changeable nature. In the bridge, Lana frustratedly sings of her boy’s hot weather (bad temper) in the summer and how even though he’s hot, he’s also a ‘neglectful lover’. But then she talks of how he’s ‘sadly crumbling’, this could mean that even though Lana still doesn’t understand him, she slowly notices his patterns and realize that there’s a reason behind his coldness, and he doesn’t even realize that Lana notices this. In conclusion, I think that this is a heartfelt song that resonates with a lot of people who’s in a relationship with a toxic person, is emotionally attached to said person, and wants them to change despite how seemingly impossible it is. This song really explores the feelings of insecurity and uncertainty of being with someone who lives in their own world and doesn’t want to change. Word of advice: always follow your heart but think about yourself and your well-being because you ARE important.

I don't get why Lana isn't as populair as you expect her to be. How can you not like her salty voice and a glorious look at old Hollywood and night club music from the 50s and 60's. All dippen in a new sound that's modern and still reminds you of the old days, the femme fatale. I only wonder if she can sing this song as well live as she does here.

+Bob Carter She is populair, but not by a certain type, like Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber (jak). She has a kind of style that can work, but her genre is not easy to sell to one big group, like Taylor or Justin Bieber is for teens. Her songs can be for several ages, but that's also the problem. A lot of her songs have lyrics that sound a bit childish for a 40 yr old and visa versa with songs that may not attrack the teens that much. Does this make sense. Hard to explain., coz I don't get it either. I love most of her songs, but not all of them and mostly because of the lyrics about drugs, coz it doesn't make any sense. I think that's it, some of her lyrics are too juvenile and others are very mature. That can mean why she doesn't sell enough records or isn't more populair in the charts. Long story for a short answer, lol.😆 ✌ I read she sang good live and Im glad, coz ppl kept saying she couldn't sing, maybe she didn't have the right aquitment( ?) in those days..... favorite song (at the moment) The Blackest Day, I think. Hard to choose, almost all her songs have something I like... 😉 ✌

+DiamondWolf The mainstream music has a few good artists, but I must admit that these days a lot is crap they put out, esp those D.J. collabs. A lot of music for teens ofcause and a few good, original artists and some from.other countries, but most is often not my kind of music and I like a lot of genres, almost every decade had some great artists, from the 50s, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's till now and a lot of them are dead or old or just no longer perform and some are. Glad I was raised in a household with all sorts of music, plus after that through a boyfriend but also from strangers and good friends to ofcause Internet and the radio and tv itself. That's a lot of music I collected over the years...

This is not about a young Woman dating an Older guy, this is about an Old man remembering what could have being the love of his life that die young. Lana is a Ghost that he sees everywhere. Prove? At min 3:39 the guy makes the cross sing when he sees her pass in front of him swimming. He grew old sad and lonely. Maybe wanting someone new but couldn't find anyone like her.

In many of her songs she says that she likes old men, it's not a secret (Cola refference). So, i think there is no special meaning behind this video. It's well known that Lana likes or at least she liked to have fun with rich,old men. Search through her songs and you'll understand.

You know this vid was explained some time ago and I believe [not 100% sure] that Lana had agreed to this: that born to die, west coast, shades of cool were all telling a story. It began with born to die when her character dies. In west coast u see her dancing in flames to pay homage to how her character died. This old man is really the young guy/ love of her life who has gotten old. She's everywhere, in everything he sees and it torments him. In this vid u can see her looking transparent or kinda like a ghost. Anyways if this isn't the right theory it is by far my favourite of all the ones I've read. It makes watching these vids sooo sad but beautiful at the same time. Lana is pure genius.

cribabyjay it's blue jeans, i belive there's another theory that goes blue jeans (their relationship) born to die (lana dying) west coast (the guy remembering their time together, seeing her ghost etc) then shades of cool (him seeing her everywhere basically) that's a short version of it pretty sure there's a more in depth version if you just Google that order then "theory"

My theory: As many of the comments have said, I do believe that Lana's character died when she and the man were young and her spirit follows him around. However I also think that the character of the old man in this video is the same guy from her video Born To Die because at the end of that video her lover is holding her dead body after he caused the car to crash and they were both pretty young when this happened. About in their 20s. And the way she acts around the older man and holds him at the end of this video after she dances with him could be a parallel to the born to die video. Also, at 3:06 you can see an American flag waving in the background, which could be a parallel to the other video as well. Idk that's just what I think, haha! But either way our queen slays in both songs, and ,well, every song. Her music and vids are a beautiful piece of art. Let me know your thoughts on the theory, bye! Edit: Also, I saw some of y’alls replies that the Blue Jeans video could be connected as well because the same guy drowns her at the end of the video and in this video we see what might be a parallel to that when she swims in the pool. I agree with this, especially since he looks distressed and shocked when she comes out of the pool! And one of y’all also said she says she will love him till the end of time in Blue Jeans and her haunting him proves that she did, which I think is a cool detail. I really like what we’re putting together here, it’s interesting 🙃

how can you all say Lana del rey is overrated? That she can't sing? That people like Kiesza and lorde are better than her? Oh my god whoever you are put your shit together. Lana is an ARTIST, she makes great music, art, she definitely can sing, she writes most of her lyrics and they're amazing, she's got an original tone, her voice gives the chills to billions of people, she's an hard-worker, some of you guys don't seem to know about her very much but you have to know that she's been doing music for her entire life and even if her first works weren't appreciated enough she never gave up. Now she's on top of the charts, she started working for many directors too, Tim Burton himself hired her for his new movie saying that lana gives him chills. Lizzie's stunning, incredibly talented, beautiful, serious, smart, she can express emotions with her voice better than any other artist I know. That's my opinion, feel free to disagree but before start hating just try to actually listen to one of her song, I bet you're smart enough to get my point. Lot of love.

I don't care about all the others, Lana IS the best thing that ever happened to music. The only reason she isn't as recognized by mainstream music is because people nowadays don't appreciate real music. They really don't. People are so unintelligent now, they wouldn't know art and creativity if it hit them in the face. That's why shit songs like Anaconda, Work, MILFS are so popular. If Lana were around years ago, let's say 60s, 70s. She would be HUGE, she would go down in musical history and become a legend. Lana Del Rey, i fucking adore you and your music. Please, never ever stop creating.

+Luciana I'll go a little further with a point of view. I think 4 vids r connected. 1st song born to die, obviously she dies but he survives. Blue jeans he's alone but remembers her (that's y she says remember that I'll always luv u). Then in west coast he's a lot older but remembers the time they had spent at the beach so when he's caressing his shoulder, in the car, he feels her spirit there n imagines touching her. In 50 shades of cool he sees her spirit then finally he commits suicide (it shows a gun firing) Then they're together again. Only my interpretation 😉

Lana Del Rey Write an Album with Songs She actually want to sing, and that is Art. She doesn't compose Songs just because its what the kids are digging.

SuperkenGaming Art is art because it moves you, or makes you think, or react, or see things differently. Lana Del Rey may not be art to you but she is to other people. I can guarantee you've never had a thought a million people before you haven't thought already but it doesn't mean you deserve to be called a "Manufactured Product", neither does she.

After getting Lust For Life upon it's release I've been doing a Lana Del Rey discography listen. I can't get enough of her. Like most artists who fall into being ruined by being in the charts Lana Del Rey in EVERY! Single album still stays true to herself and to her fans. SHE'S BLOODY AMAZING!!!! Her voice is so dreamy, captivating, haunting, dark, perfect and so much MORE! She can sing live and she never fails to deliver. Talent that never goes wasted. Not to forget she is incredibly gorgeous and such an incredible human being.👌🏻

A masterpiece indeed.Ultraviolence is Lana's magnum opus,in my opinion
@Oudri1257 жыл бұрын
Ruthless XO Completely disagreed. I think it was her worst attempt at an album.
@ruthlessxo997 жыл бұрын
Oudri125 can I ask why? What didn't you like? I think her worst album was Lust for life,even though I still really like it
@Oudri1257 жыл бұрын
Ruthless XO Well I have a couple of main issues with the album. The first is her vocals; Lana goes into a higher register in almost every song, and in all honesty she sounds much better and is capable to transmitting emotion more in her lower register. On the topic of vocals though, some of Lana's vocalisation on songs like Pretty When You Cry is downright awful, like in the ending of that song, where she screeches over the blaring guitar. Another problem I have with the album is the lyrical content. Just because there's tragic context in the lyrics, it doesn't excuse the fact that they're quite awful compared to her other efforts... All of the songs try SO incredibly hard to be melodramatic and sad, and they just don't work because the lyrics are often downright meaningless. The songs that I like are Cruel World, Ultraviolence and Shades of Cool. I suppose the instrumentals were the saving grace of this album. Honeymoon is my overall favourite album, it's a mature take on love and... that kinda shows considering all of my fellow teenager fans seem to detest that album as it's 'too boring'.
@ruthlessxo997 жыл бұрын
Oudri125 I love Honeymoon. It definitely grew on me after a few listens and now it's my second favourite.The lyrics,the instrumental,everything is amazing and it's so sad that it didn't get the recognition it deserved. I respect your opinion about Ultraviolence but I loved the lyrical content of this album.I have many memories attached to UV,so naturally it has a special place in my heart.Songs like Shades of Cool,West Coast,Cruel World,Ultraviolence and Old Money cemented my respect for Lana's artistry.I felt like it was the first album where she finally approached the sound she wanted,with Honeymoon following.The rock elements that she incorporated definitely suited her voice.That guitar solo on Shades Of Cool is almost orgasmic

This is my favourite song of hers by far. Not only does she show off her higher range but the tone of the song is a perfect mix of psychedelia and jazz/blues, two of her BEST genres.

You either have to be mainstream or freaking unpopular to win a Grammy or MTV VMA. I'm not saying everyone who's won one is not good but indeed Grammys and MTV suck at sharing their awards 'coz Lana, her songs and videos are so good and worth an award. Voters and all the staff behind must refresh their taste and opinion. And for example, Lorde won best ROCK video last night for 'Royals'. That girl is not even rock.

People these days don't vote for the best anymore. They just vote the most popular or their favourite even though the category doesn't even fit.
