Lancashire Footnotes Shorts Episode Ninety-Seven - Darwen

Darwen is an old milltown situated just below Blackburn on the maps and, as such, we expected it to be a grimy, run-down, long forgotten dump with brass band music playing and loud mouthed kids that needed a smack in their gobs. As it turned out, it wasn't. In fact, in reality it looked a damned sight better than it did on Google Earth. I rather liked the place, which is saying something for me, because I usually detest everywhere and everyone, so there you go.

Unless it's well sign-posted, there's no point in us putting Tockholes on our 'to do' list. We'll just have to hope that we find it by accident. The last time we actually set out for somewhere specific it was Lancaster and we ended up in Great Mitton. And the first time we went to Heysham we wondered why everybody was speaking french and why there was a students' replica of Blackpool Tower in the middle of the road.

I thought i would ask an intelligent question for once, i do that every couple of years or so. Why is an urn called an urn. I figure with your liking for the macabre and all things under the sod or burnt at the stake you may be able to shed light on this somber ritual.

I'm not entirely sure, but I heard once that they were named after the neolithic potter Ernest Guzzunder. (Somehow being buried in a guzzunder didn't sound right, so etymologists opted for the former.)
