Part 4: • Lance "Un" Rivera on M...
Part 6: • Lance "Un" Rivera: I w...
Part 1: • Biggie's Business Part...
--------
In this clip, Lance "Un" looks back on a tragic incident back in 1988 when a rookie NYC police officer name Edward Byrne was fatally shot in the head in Jamaica Queens and the ripple effects that it sparked in the drug game and the rap industry. Lance explains once George H.W. Bush was in office, he targeted the city's top drug dealers such as Supreme, which led to a mass exodus to out of state locations such as Baltimore, Washington D.C., North Carolina, etc. As the discussion continues, Lance details some of the questionable tactics that were used to apprehend drug dealers which resulted in many of them turning to the rap game to invest their money behind-the-scenes. Lastly, he details meeting Biggie's manager Jacob York before explaining the crucial advise that he shared with him about the music business.

This is the clearest explanation of how the drug trade in the late 80s migrated south from NYC and how many of the drug dealers eventually got into the music industry.

That’s the benefit of growing up in NYC. You can grow up poor but rub shoulders with a millionaire/celebrity. Everyone from Robert Dinero and Al Pacino to Tupac and Biggie were all born and raised in NY. Especially back in the 70’s and 80s, you likely went to high school with a future celebrity. Put it like this: 50 Cent grew up maybe 20 minutes from Donald Trump’s childhood home. A lot of people know Jay-Z went to high school with Biggie and Busta but before that Jay went to another high school with rapper AZ.

Yeah, this is what a lot of people don't understand about our city. It's easy to have VISION here. It's infectious and it'll find you easily. You will see a LOT of different types of shit. Wealth ain't so geographically separate from you. It's a train ride or two away. From the projects to some of the most affluent zip codes in the country. This is why NYers have a reputation for being ambitious b/c we're exposed to more. Simple as that. It's easier not to get sucked into your little low-vibrational bubble (though ofc it still happens to a certain extent). But yeah, we're around WAY more $ than your average person.

TNT definitely had a impact on the streets of NYC when the rookie cop was killed. TNT was going crazy. Once they got the people who were involved, TNT kind of calmed down. I ain’t gonna lie, when Rudy Giuliani became mayor of NYC in 94, it was also crazy on the streets. Rudy announced that Quality Of Life Offensive program, it made me want to stop selling crack back then. I been through 3 Mayors when I was dealing drugs Ed Koch, David Dinkins they were a cake walk compared to what pressure Rudy put on the streets.
