Glad you are recommending the K6, it didn't get much praise in your ultimate handgrinder comparison video, even though it's absolutely fantastic and kicking waaay above it's league, comparable to (or even beating) grinders 2 to 3 times the price.

Agreed, bought my k6 in February and for the price it's been an amazing purchase, which I have been using for v60 and aeropress, but I found that my v60 cups sometimes come out a bit muddier than I like (nevertheless, enjoyable), though aeropress has been fantastic. I also got a flair 58 on black Friday and the pairing has been performing very well so far. Overall if you're looking for something budget k6 seems like a no-brainer. Probably going to upgrade to a Pietro when I can, because I like a lot of clarity, and want a flat burr grinder to use.

I have been using the K6 one year almost everyday for V60 and Aeropress, and ocasionally with my flair pro 2, and without a question it has been a gamechanger. I borrowed a K plus 1ZPresso for a couple of weeks, and was sure it was my destined grinder, but was unable to find it in a reasonable price due to import rates. So I made due diligence and got the K6. Trust Lance, trust me, it is worth every cent, it is a steal, the quality of the grind from the 1Zpresso I could not distinguish at all. Build quality might not be the same, but the important stuff (burr and adjustment system, and the ability to get a perfect shot from any espresso machine) its right there with the comandante and 1zpresso k series.

@@full_metal2452 for specific grains like that I have no idea. But my rule of thumb with new coffee is to start at click 85, and from there I adjust according to acidity, too sour and I go finer (normally never past 75), too biter and go coarser (I have never needed more than 92 clicks for v60).

I have a K6 and am totally happy with it now that I understand that the settings on the grinder may be significantly off and cannot be recalibrated. As someone new to making their own espresso, I did what probably everyone does as a beginner. I googled "how many clicks" to make espresso on Kingrinder K6 and also used their settings grind chart. I was losing my mind for months because I was using other users click setting suggestions. What I didn't realize is that one of shortcomings of the K6, from my understanding, is that it can be up to 45 clicks off from zero and still be considered within spec. Once I found that out and started to go 10-15 outside of other users suggested clicks for a cafelat robot, I've been having great results. So not a big deal once you figure that out but I have to admit that when I didn't know, I didn't touch my robot for months.

In theory... There are several comments here and there about K6 starting to losing grind set up after a year of 3-4 shoot per day. Like many Chinese stuff, they do look good at first but quality control and reliability over time very rarely compare to (much expensive) Western counterpart or even Taiwain made product (1Zexpresso).

I just gave myself the K6 grinder as my wife's Xmas present to me, being a past Hario user, and really find this a great grinder. As an advocate for noting burr separation, if possible, I decided to do so for the K6. A little trigonometry gives a value of microns/click = 16 * Sin(Burr-angle) and I measured the burr-angle ~15 deg, so that means the burr separation = 16 * Sin(15) * #Clicks = 16 *.25882 * #Clicks = 4.14 microns * #Clicks. A good approximation would be ~4 * #Clicks so 25 Clicks ~ 100 microns. Now I can compare that with the same burr setting on my df83 and see how the respective shots compare.

I had the pleasure of meeting your cardboard cutout last year in Portland for the SCA expo, very approachable yet strangely quiet. This video inspired the purchase of your recommended budget hand grinder (KINGrinder) and I’ve been impressed. Currently using for special requests on a small scale however it’s been fun comparing the brews against our Ditting lab grinder via pour over. First impression is appears to bring out brighter notes in fresh naturals and terrible notes in aged coffee. Looking forward to comparing espresso.

Finally made a decision and purchased the KinGrinder 6. I researched the options, relying heavily on all your hand grinder videos. The KG-6 has many features of much more expensive choices. I wanted to have a back up if my daily electric grinder failed, a good grinder for my guest set up and I will use it for travel . And value for money of course. A big factor is that the KinGrinder is available on Amazon where I already shop. Many other options require setting up new accounts and I am reluctant to send my info anywhere I don’t absolutely have to. Call it an old person (72) foible. As of this date, the Seattle public library system has been crippled for a week with a ransom wear attack, back to doing everything by hand. It can happen to anyone.

I have the Kinu M47 classic and although it's the only hand grinder I've owned, it does a fantastic job of espresso and Turkish. One thing I did with mine, and this may apply to other hand grinders aswell, is to wrap one single layer of Cellotape round the shaft where the burr goes. This was because the burr had some slight play on the shaft and therefore would be misaligned and produce different size particals. This is probably unnoticeable, but it was such an easy fix I thought it was worth it to get the best out of such an expensive grinder.

Really nice format with the overlays and production. I just got a ZP6 a few days ago and I'm working on dialing it in for my filter brews. The problem being that Made By Knock are a small Scottish manufacturer. I have an Aergrind and love it for both filter and making espresso on my Flair. @@marvinl7450 I do turbo shots all of the time, and the Pietro pro brew is great for espresso (I didn't try traditional espresso recipe). It's comparable to my DF83 with SSP lab sweet burrs, but sometimes slightly less fidelity (or in other words, slightly less discerning of flavor). But clarity seems comparable when it comes to my turbo shots. I plan on traveling with it with my Flair, and just got back from a Thanksgiving trip where I used it for pourovers daily; I don't see a problem going on road trips with it at all. I just sold my Weber HG2. I liked it though. I found the profile was actually very similar to the K plus except much smoother. The flavour clarity might also be higher on HG2 after adding the slow feeder on it (or Weber Key) which it needed to prevent popcorning (fixed with the Key v2 now). Those mazzer burrs with Webers treatment at low rpm seem like they're a conical burr trying to be a flat burr. I was initially expecting a lot more blending of flavours and more body. There's not much body but seems to produce micro fines which don't seem to negatively affect taste but provide a light silky body sometimes. I compared with a friends HG1 without the Weber burr treatment and we found his was a bit higher body and less flavour clarity so if you're looking for a more conically conical then the uncoated burrs in the HG1 or Craig Lynne HG1 prime will be cheaper and better for you vs Weber HG2

You are obviously in the top of your field. I am new to hand grinding, but not new to coffee. I would be extremely grateful for your opinion for my flavor desires. I grew up in Puerto Rico with 28 coffee trees on my property. We lived, and what was considered the ideal coffee region, proven by the fact that our border farm sold to the Vatican for 80 years. my earliest memories are growing, harvesting, drying and roasting coffee. Then we would acquire milk from our neighbor and make café con Leche as kids. However, the preferred brewing style for coffee growers was simply hand grind beans, and then subject them to 195 to 200° water and pour them through a cloth sock or a metal sieve to retain more oil. I don’t particularly care for the filters, and I like to have more oil rich and that silkiness that hits you with less filtering. It’s 62 years old. This will be my first hand grinder. I was looking at a timemore C3 max pro. I won’t be making espresso, I will just be doing pour over. so I would like your advice on a entry-level grinder. I’ll spend 100 to 150. Also, if you can recommend some pour over coffee, coffee filters. Thank you very much.

Some people like white wines, some people like red bordeaux, red wines. IPA beers or dark molasses Rich, Belgian style beers. But I would still like a good quality grinder that’s not too terribly expensive. If I had the budget, I would buy a Comandante. Thank you for your response. Comandante is more expensive because it uses better quality steel in their burrs and they don't use aluminium (also Germany wages). 1zpresso are much better value I agree but after seeing photos of chipped burrs (and metal specks in the grounds) in new-ish models, I'm not sure I'd recommend them for people that want a grinder to last a long time.

Most people say that the Timemore C2 and C3 are almost indistinguishable from each other. But after getting to try both of them, I find them to be quite different. The C2 has a larger bean capacity and is easier to feed beans into without them bouncing out. It is also better for espresso because of its finer tuning of grind size. And that's where the advantages stop for me. The C3 makes cleaner tasting light roasted coffee brews. It is a HECK of a lot easier to grind with, thanks to its proprietary S2C burrs (Although the C2 grinds a lot faster..with a lot of muscle involved). And the C2 is awkward to stand up with the catch cup detached. The grind adjustment dial juts out from the bottom and doesn't allow it to stand up straight on a flat surface. It bugs the heck out of me. The C3 is just the best all around to me, and it's usually the same price as the C2.

Adjustment mechanism is just one of them, not to mention the exorbitant price, the floating burr design (while there are so many options in the market offering 2 or 3 alignment bears, even at entry level prices) and this is not hate against comandante. I have a K4 because it was recommended for espresso over a K6. I picked it up last year for $80 US on Amazon. I think in the year since I've bought it, people have caught on to them, because now Kingrinder grinders on Amazon are more difficult to find, and more expensive. To Lance's point about them having a "similar" burr to 1Zpresso, I'm almost certain the parts are identical. I don't even mean they're "cloned," but are actually made in the same factory by the same company. In fact, I'm pretty sure Kingrinder and 1Zpresso are owned by the same people, and the idea was to have Kingrinder sold to the China and SEA markets, and 1Zpresso to the North American and European markets.

I've been using the 1Zpresso J-Max grinder for about a year now and have noticed a very peculiar behavior. Extraction times are highly dependent on the speed with which you grind. I tend to dial in my espresso with a grind speed that is as SLOW as possible. So slow that I'm bordering on getting stuck when my muscles can't take any more tension. Now, when I increase rotation speed from this "barely able to grind"-level, this leads to significantly LOWER extraction times. One example: a few days ago I dialed in a new roast to extract in about 28 seconds, again with a painfully slow grinding speed. As long as I maintain that slow speed, extraction times are fairly consistent between 26 and 30 seconds However, when I increase the rotations per minute to as high as I can manage, extraction times cut less than half, settling between 12 and 15 seconds. Now, this might be due to a mechanical weakness of my J-Max grinder but in more and more videos, I hear people mention a similar relationship between grind speeds and extraction times for a vast array of grinders. What I'm asking is: is this a known and well-understood phenomenon?

@MaltePersike
@MaltePersike 9 ай бұрын
@@tim9747 Is there an explanation why SLOWER rpm leads to SLOWER extraction? This would indicate that slower grinding - everything else being equal - yields finer particle sizes. Why is that?
@tim9747
@tim9747 9 ай бұрын
@@MaltePersike I want to caveat that this is purely conjecture as I couldn't find a relevant scientific paper, but I am an engineer so here's my guess based on first principles: Holding all other factors constant and assuming that coffee fractures below some given torque value (materials break according to molecular structure, but also shape at the macro level - a sphere is stronger than other shapes per given unit of volume) - where the only variable is RPM there are only two factors that change - Power (torque x rpm) and fall time (affected by gravity, and grinder tilt/angle) A slower RPM could yield slower extraction due to more even particle size distribution. In a hand-grinder, we typically use cone burrs, which means as a bean breaks, it will drop to the next burr regime/gradient of the cone where the burrs are closer together and so-on. If you look at the entry point on a burr set, you will be able to draw a variety of widths before the first crack (peak-to-trough on burrs varies as it spins) and this hold true through the whole geometry. The peak-to-trough will look like an oscillating wave from above, but the gap at the trough will get finer and finer as you progress through the burr stack. Grinding slow would let the bean piece drop to the burr sets where they "match" width before shearing again; so you will get a final distribution that more closely matches the manufacturer's burr set distribution profile - hence why some grinders are more suited to filter and others espresso. Grinding fast would give a chance at chipping away the piece at an increment before it hits the "match" width. This could be from shooting/jumping through a gradient, smashing into another bean piece before both are crushed against each other - breaking into non-uniform sub-pieces, etc. I would bet money that popcorning is more prevalent at higher RPMs. Note that your filter bed preparation will also vary the extraction speed. When I grind directly into my portafilter, I get a different extraction than when I grind into a dosing-cup and dump THAT into the portafilter (even with a WDT). I believe this is due to particle sorting.

Just two things worth a mention. Commandante is made in Germany versus China, I feel there is something modern but artisanal about the design and manufacturing. I haven't seen a Timemore factory tour, so who knows. Secondly, the company (and distributors) stand behind it 100%. I actually purchased mine in Germany, brought it back to the States, and it was no problem handling an issue through a local distributor. I use a 1zpresso K-max. I considered going electric but in the end not worth $1500AUD+ to save 30 seconds of manual work. I found using thick rubber bands helps with grip and also a large hose clamp to give my fingers something to lock into, also roasting a touch darker helps with ease of use (I home roast). My only issues I find is I need to look after grinding to make sure no beans got stuck on the walls inside as large beans can get lodged, a thicker grinder would be better but then it would be harder to hold. Also unsure if its true about body/clarity but I feel like I lack body with this grinder As for clicks and adjusting, the K-max is more then fine, each click is maybe 6 seconds +/- possibly but crank speed also changes things too. Slow cranking is about 3 seconds +/-. I can easily get 15g in 30g out in 30 seconds at 2.9-3.0 set
