Lancia Aurelia B20 Coupé: An Evolution Of Grand Touring

Besides heralding the dawn of the great post-war grand touring cars-or as our host Sam Hancock puts it, “vehicles that could win a hillclimb by day and pull up proudly to the opera house later that night”-the Lancia Aurelia B20 Coupés also found success on the circuits and sprint courses of Europe with just a few modifications.
In specifications close to the standard road going form, Aurelias finished second in the Mille Miglia and won their class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951, before going on to win the Targa Florio in 1952, and the Monte Carlo Rally in 1954. In other words, it has an impressive racing résumé.
The cars’ prowess on the circuits, hill climbs, and rally stages was due in large part to the advanced technology that Vittorio Jano, Francesco de Virgilio, and the rest of the talented Lancia engineers fitted inside the beautifully minimalistic Ghia-designed bodywork.
Besides being part of the first production car line powered by V6 engines, Aurelias like the fourth-series B20 Coupé featured in the film also boasted independent suspension, a rear transaxle transmission setup, and in-board rear brakes, to name just a few of its mechanical goodies. None of this came cheap, though, and while customers were given humble fabric-covered seats, the Aurelia was priced higher than the Bentleys of its day.
In this week’s film, Sam Hancock takes a drive through the winding roads of Reggio Emilia, enjoying and espousing the talents still possessed by this prime example of 1950s automotive excellence.

@@23Piccolina I understand your angst even though I am an Indian and our Tata Group owns Landrover and Jaguar and indeed the Mahindra Group owns Pininfarina Design. Sadly, this video is proof that this channel has lost its magic. This car is an incredible car that so many have never seen before-you had a chance at real magic here...I saw my first Aurelia B20 at MM 2014 and I have been obsessed ever since. The format of the owner telling their story, set to music was so much better than this format. I suspect your subscriber numbers will continue to go down until you find a way to speak to real car people again...this is like a sad reboot of Victory by Design, which no one other than Alain de Cadenet should ever attempt to reproduce...we all get why ownership had to change, but come on

Sam says he knew very little about the model until he did his research. From all his errors, he still doesn't know much about it. He says it's a Series 4, but that didn't arrive until 1954 and this is supposed to be a 1951 car (and looks it). He says it has 118 bhp, but the Series 1 only had 75; even the final 1957 Series 6, with a larger engine, only managed 112 (although that was a very respectable number for a sporting car of the period). Top speed was about 90, at a stretch, not 100. Back to school, Sam.

Sorry, all I see is a presenter talking all the time while driving a nice, but borrowed car and giving information I could have read at wikipedia. It's not a bad show, but there are many car shows where some presenter presents a historically relevant, borrowed car. If this is the new Petrolicious, then Petrolicious is not really worth watching anymore. I always was interested in the stories of one specific car and one specific owner and to listen to the owner in whatever obscure language (even in French, grrrrr) he or she prefers to explain why this one specific car is relevant to him or herself backed with great footage and driving noises 80% of the time. Here we see one guys face and listen to him telling about power and speed and production numbers for 80% of the time instead. Let me say it again, f I want to know that going here is faster: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancia_Aurelia No matter if it was a gorgeous car or one I really did not have any connection to, I always could connect to the passion of the owner regarding his model, because this what was Petrolicious really presented masterfully. Passion and cinematography. I know it was expensivly made free content, so I am not entitled to anything. Still I am saying that I am not really interested anymore in the format. I'll give them a few more episodes, but the moment I will unsubscribe is not that far away. Sad.
@fezzle1154

But if you watch the older videos you will see that the owners really didn't talk about the history of the car at all. I'm so much more interested in learning about the history of the vehicle and how it came to be, and maybe what kind of races it did and how it preformed at it's peak. It's so much easier to listen to this host than the older car owners who only talk about how they worked in their fathers workshop as a kid and always dreamed of owning a super car. Most of the time these car owners don't even talk about how they were able to purchase the car in question, they just assume we know. I'm also just not very interested in what the car means to them, I'm much more interested in finding out what the car means to me through the historical info provided in the style of videos we have now. I wouldn't mind the interviews coming back and I think that having both the interviews as well as the host would be the best of both worlds, but I would hate to see this style of video completely disappear. For instance in the video I watched recently about the Lamborghinis Miura, I found myself lulled with boredom when listening to the owner of the vehicle explaining his life story and how he never thought he'd own a super car, and then never explaining how he even came to owning the Miura. After every interview we just see generic shots of the car driving from the exterior. I want to see how driving the car is to the driver, and the type of videos we have now show that perfectly. Someone else's life story just doesn't add as much value as the historical backstory and interior driver experience does. I would be happiest if we had both, but for the time being I don't see the need to shit on this style of video so much. Yes you could just look at a Wikipedia article but you would get half as much information about what driving the car was like and how it feels to the driver and what it really looks like. Yes you could read an article about the car but I'd rather it just be explained to me through a captivating voice like we have now.

@@fezzle1154 I agree to a degree. Especially when it is one of the really rich guys who own half a dozen exotic cars and now present just one of them. These stories are mostly boring. It is mostly the more achievable cars, that are fascinating. The Alfa Spider, the really beaten down, ugly Porsche 912, the young guy whose grandfather already worked at Piaggio (or was it Lamebretta?) who now polishes and cares for his 40 year old scooter (worth maybe a few thousand EUR only) through Italy. I have zero personal interest in owning an ugly 912 or a 40 year old Italian scooter, but I can relate to the passion of the owners. I am absolutely not interested in learning about the history of a model. There are dozens of channels where presenters present old cars. Jay Leno, Carfection, The Drive, Harry's garage and - now and then - I almost do not dare to say it, Top Gear are examples of such. There it is mostly about the car, the models history, the raw data and then you can watch people drive it while telling you how it feels to do so while doing it. Petrolicious was the one and only channel where it was NOT about the model and how it rides and which races it won and how fast it can go to 100 km/h / 60MPH, but where it was only about men (and women) and their very own and special toys. And that was the reason, why I subscribed to Petrolicious and not to any of the other channels mentioned above (except Harry, because who does not like Harry?). Too many words already for a YT comment :)

Found it. It was a Lambretta, but not 40, but more than 60 years old. Beautiful bike and video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWHFeJ2OhdOYhM0 (despite the French) Or this one (finally in a decent language) about another not extraordinarily expensive car: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGPJqJlmaN2nfdU Or this about one of the prettiest little sport cars ever built. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGS8hHata654h68 Stories of real people and their cars or bikes for which the work, on which they work and which they like for specific reasons. And of course we see mostly images of the car. With the sporty ones I would like a little more engine noise.
@fezzle1154
@fezzle1154 3 жыл бұрын
@@Kref3 I agree and disagree with this as well. I just really don't feel the passion of the owners or anything like that at all. Unless the owner is a really good interviewer and speaker like in this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep6QaYiboa2fpMU&ab_channel=Petrolicious I just couldn't care less about the owners passion and all that. In the video I linked the owner also goes into the history of the car and I just find that so much more interesting than the backstory of the owner, regardless of if their grandfather worked at Piaggio/Lamebretta. However, I am interested in hearing about the owners experience with the car like how much they maintain it, it's costs, where they drive with it etc. Interviews like this really do add value to the videos for me so I would love to see that style incorporated into the existing videos we have right now. People like Jay Leno and the other channels you mentioned (except top gear :) have disgustingly boring channels. For instance, I recently watched a Jay Leno video about the Bugatti EB110, hoping for some info on how it drove and the history of the vehicle, but instead I was lulled to sleep with the dry and boring talk about the cars seemingly normal engine. Even after Jay Leno finally drove the car, the shots were awful. In fact, there were hardly any shots at all. Instead, Jay Leno was just talking about the engine while driving the car, instead of talking about the engine while it sat there in his garage. I subscribed to Petrolicious because of it's captivating host who talked about captivating car history while driving captivating and interesting cars, while not just explaining it to us, but actually showing us how the car felt to drive. With the rolling camera shots both inside and outside the car, I could really see what driving the car might be like. But I can also appreciate the interviews as well, and I think that having both would make this channel the best it could be

I agree with many other commenters that it would be nice to get some of the old style back where we get to meet the owners. That being said, this guy still does a way better job than most other car show presenters.

Cloth seats were considered more up market than leather when this car was made. For instance, if you look at older coupe de ville limousines, the driver’s seat which was exposed to the elements was trimmed in leather. The owner’s enclosed cabin was trimmed in cloth, often wool, cotton or silk.

I miss the owners telling their own stories. 😔 Now we just have this generic guy with a British accent. Like every other KZbin channel.😒 Petrolicious is turning into Carfection.🙄

Wow. Yeah, the sound mix on this is absolutely awful. The car's fine, although it's interesting that there was as much in the film about what makes the car 'bad' (ok, sub-optimal) as what there is to like about it. I'm cool with both the more 'review' type films and the previous 'owner' films, although perhaps the former are a little more like what many other channels do and the latter more unique to this one. A mix would be nice - in both respects.

Hi Petrolicious, 1) GREAT VIDEO 2) Agree with others, music is a distraction and not needed & 3) PLEASE as a Fellow KZbin Creator, turn off the "mid-roll" ads so your Viewers can enjoy your AMAZING video with out the distraction of 4 to 5 commercials in a 10 minute video. You're friend, Lou

First saw one of these in 1959 at the Territorial Army barracks in Gorton Manchester. I was 8 and my eyes popped out of my head, never seen a more beautiful car and loved them ever since. Thanks for bringing back memories. Long time ago and now a long way away as I now live in Tasmania. Thanks again

if we are going to get a review, please do look under the hood? and maybe under the car to show the innovations? like a Jay Leno Covid edition video? the music was too loud compared to the voice. in general i prefer somebody explaining what makes the car great, rather than complaining about the seats...

We need to do some sort of boycott. Nothing wrong with this man hes a good at his job. But the owner story format is what made me and many others if not everyone subscribe to this channel. The owners story brings passion and excitement and a kind of feeling you dont get from other channels. The reason why you guys were the best was because you guys were different than the other channels. You guys brought more than just a quick history lesson of a car. You brought more meaning and feeling into that car and the owner. It makes it more special by having the owner in the series. From now on and its no offense to you guys but im going to be disliking your vids until the old format is.

Please stop this and go back to the old way, please. This is just awful, I really hate this. I applaud you trying new things and all that but there is absolutely no connection felt between "some guy driving someone else's car." It utterly and completely misses the premise of Petrolicious, what you built your entire channel on.
