I love these videos. It made me think about the summer I turned 13 and helped load square bales. They were heavy, green bales. My goodness. As a girl I had a time picking and loading bales but I slept some kinda good after a warm shower and a hearty meal. The next day was brutal but I learned to appreciate hard work because the days end was followed up by comfort. The long hot days were just me, my prayers and talks with God.

I've seen some Amish use tractor-trailer they had steel wheels on them with a layer of rubber so it wouldn't damage the road

That's the first time I've I ever saw Amish square baling, around here (N.E. Ohio) most do square bales and some load loose hay. Thanks for sharing.

You realize that monitors were added to ballers around 20 year's ago or less, and before that farmers made perfectly round balles just fine, basically you learn to drive straight and that's it. Some machines had mechanical indicators on each side others only one that showed how full press is at the moment. I get that monitor is nice feature but it's not necessary and basically overcomplicate and rise the price of something that was simple.

Thanks for watching. Amish accept and adopt change slower than the mainstream. Pretty much all decisions are based on how something new will affect their families, culture and community. By slowing the farming process down it leaves less free time for themselves and their family members. It “forces” them to work together family wise as well as community wise. They’ve built a reliance mentality into their communities. A family and neighbors that rely on each other is much less apt to break apart and go their separate ways. In a sense they force the idea of community. Freeing up time can also lead to family members doing their own thing and next thing you know the family is no more. I hope this makes a little sense.

Ok, let me get this. So there's and engine powering a PTO and hydraulics to a baler and there's rubber wheels. Just exactly what is their objections to going the whole way and just using a tractor?

Thanks for watching. They’ve agreed to not use tractors in the field. Part tradition but more importantly they feel tractors would speed the process up making them less reliant on family and on community. This would lead to more down time which could be detrimental to their culture and community. In fact, the less reliant they are on farming and the long hours that it entails has caused distress in Amish communities.

So why they use skid steer for loading? It can be done by hand using planks and leavers, been there done that. Believe me using tractors don't gets you more free time, it's gets you less people to complete some tasks but time? on a farm? There's always something to do around the house, sth to repair, build or sth around animals. Also using tractors sometimes allows you to be a little less tiered at the end of the day but it's not given.

Tractors would speed the process up and lead to too much free time. Their culture values long work hours. Too much free time would be a detriment to their close knit community. Neighboring farmers will help each other during harvest strengthening their community bonds They put a lot of thought into what is and isn’t acceptable yo their communities. What seems paradoxical to us makes real sense in their scheme of things.

@@clintonlehmann4369 , They also have to be pragmatic. Putting up loose hay to feed a herd of 75-100 cows, heifers, and calves isn’t practical. Can you imagine how much space would be required for 3/4-1 million pounds of loose hay? Sometimes common sense prevails.

It’s more about using the horses and not about the engine power. They’ve agreed among themselves to use horsepower when its practical. Trying to feed 80-100 dairy cows and heifers by putting up loose hay is pretty impossible. So that’s why you’ll see engines running the equipment. They try to find the balance in their farming methods. It’s not for anyone else but themselves to understand or agree with.

It is like asking some farmers why do you run equipment from the 1960s or 70s. Some like to maintain an under 500 acre operation, they don't want to operate plantations. I prefer to work with older equipment, easy to maintain and don't go deep into debt.

Many Amish districts have adopted horse driven motorized equipment for pragmatic reasons…it’s nigh impossible to harvest enough feed for 80-100 cows and heifers using ground driven implements. Some Amish groups do use only that type but they are milking far fewer cows.

@@LancoAmish i`m from Germany the last farmer here worked with horses in 1968 three pulled a binder without motor very hard work in the 80th i was in Lebanon pa. at Luke Bachman he was an accountant many Amish came to him for taxwork.

I dont know why but seeing the horses go in front of a diesel engine at work rpm make me feel stress. I know they're workhorses and can take it just fine but been into tractors and baling whit them for like 20 years make me wanna spare the horses that noise behind them. I guess it just feels od seeing something p.t.o driven behind horses 😊

Why do you all bother to gear up all the horses to a six cilinder diesel cart with a baler attached to it instead of just buying a tractor to do it? Im just really interested in the way you Amish think. I mean it's more easy to just put a tractor in front of the baler. The horses are very well trained by the way.

It’s very cultural. Tractors are seen as a tool that would speed things up too much. Keeping their families and communities together is very important. Most Amish have nothing against gas engines. It’s when they would be used to the detriment of family and community is where they draw the line. It’s common for Amish farmers to bring their teams, wagons, family members, etc to another farmer during harvest. Amish communities that have a lot of members off the farm and working factory jobs are losing their sense of community. So, what doesn’t look sensible from the outside is very sensible from the inside. There are neighboring English farms here that are 3-4 times as large as the typical Amish farm. One man on a tractor can do as much in a day as an Amish farmer in a week. It wouldn’t be good for family nor community.

@@LancoAmish thanks for the explanation it does make a kind of sense on the community and family aspect. Of course you'll never get done as much. In the country I live all farms have a tractor. We also know 2 words to describe a part of the family "gezin" and "familie". The first one "gezin" describes your home situation your mom, dad, brothers and sisters. The other one "familie" describes "gezin" and everyone else you're related to like your grandparents, uncle's and cousins. We see our "gezin" every day and the whole "familie" we try to meet once every month or so it strongly depends on the bond you've got with them and it's quite common to invite a part of the "familie".

That really has nothing to do with their choice to use horses. They try to adopt change methodically in a wait and see approach to the effects on community. They are pragmatic knowing in order to survive economically as farmers they need to make the harvesting process practical enough to be able to feed 75-100 cows, heifers, and calves. Ground driven implements would be nearly impossible to use at such a scale. Horses pulling engine powered implements is one of a never ending set of compromises to survive. How do you suppose a farmer lifts a 1500 pound bale onto a wagon or into an 8 foot tall feed mixer?

@@chile424bstit’s not cheating if you don’t own it. I’m not sure what part of Lancaster County he filmed this in (and I live here). The farther south in the county you go, the more strict they get. So much so that a fellow I know (he’s now ex amish) got shunned because he refused to get rid of his skid loader and stationary tmr mixer. The farther north you get, you see amish running around in tractors, you’re seeing more and more “custom farming” done by means of someone owning a baler like you see above, and many will rent it from him. Many will rent, or have the business own it, and then, by their logic, it is acceptable, because they themselves don’t own it.

They do all of their construction in house there's no way you can ever bid any projects that have, But they will definitely bid jobs outside of their community and take jobs from other people outside their closed community that is very hypocritical.

Should the Amish have to bid higher so that non Amish companies can compete? I know of quite a few projects just in my area that were Amish owned and not built by an Amish company. Many of the large farm projects for manure and storm water management in the Lancaster area are being done by Non Amish construction crews. Should the homeowner putting on an addition be penalized for taking the low bid that happens to be from an Amish company? Usually when a business can’t make a go of it in a certain area due to pricing there are 3 things it can do…1. Leave that business and start another that doesn’t have as much or any competition, 2. Lower the cost of doing their business, or 3 relocating to another area with less competition. It’s how the free market has worked for hundreds of years. What do you see as the solution to the problem you brought up?

Amish using a Kubota Skid Steer? If the Amish are evolving and adding machinery into the way they farm then just get rid of the horses and farm the way everyone else does. It looks like hypocrisy and cheating; either be Amish or join the club.
