Land Aquisition Dealing With Neighbors Clayton Elementary

I went out and took a look at it. It was a prime location. I think it was five or six acres wide, right on the corner of two major streets in Concord, California, and I thought it would be great.
So, we developed a master site plan as far as what we would be going to the planning department with, but one of the things you do before you get too far in the development process is you host a neighborhood meeting. You invite all the neighbors to come in because you want to find out who’s up for the project or who’s going to be against the project. It also allows us to know any big hurdles that we need to overcome.
A lot of neighbors came to the meeting. It was really a great turnout. We had ice cream, pie and that sort of stuff. The pastor got up and talked about his vision for the church. He shared a little bit about its history, how excited he was to be able to acquire Clayton Elementary and what he saw as far as a development. I also got up and did some real simple concept drawings to show the community everything I know regarding the project. I thought then that it went really well.
About a week later, one of the members of the church-who happened to live in that area, gave me a call and said that we got a big problem. They said a lot of the neighbors whose property backs up to Clayton Elementary have now formed an organization called The Friends of Clayton Elementary. I don’t know how a defunct, dead, empty school can have friends, but apparently, they’re the Friends of Clayton Elementary, and they are now organized. They are going to do what they can to defeat my project of tearing down the old elementary school and putting a nice church facility there.
I got look at it, and whenever I ran into a situation like this. I would do what I learned back in the early days, around the 1880s and 90s, when I was learning to do church development. I’d seek advice from somebody who’d been down this road many times before. Luckily, I have a friend named Sal. Sal owned a large development company in the Bay Area that did shopping centers, and if ever I got into a situation where I needed advice, I would contact him. I called Sal to tell him about the problem. I told him we want to buy this property called Clayton Elementary and we want to put a church on it but the neighbors are all up in arms against this church project. They’ve formed the organization Friends of Clayton Elementary because they are afraid that we’re going to build a church that might block their view of Mt. Diablo. Imagine that, a church blocking the view of a devil mountain.
