Hello. Greetings from Paris ! I own a defender 90 Td5 as a second car. Never been able to high rev it and up shift quickly like a Golf or a sport car. The gearbox doesn’t like it and blocks or grind the agressive up shift. Especially 1 to 2d, 2 to 3d. If I up shift slowly on low revs, everything is smooth. How in the video the up shift is so quick on high rpm ? Many thx for your feedbacks. Merci ! Julien

I got myself a Td5 new in 2006 here in Johannesburg SA . Still driving it and have been all over southern Africa with it. Yes always busy with maintenance but had never let me down even in the most remote parts of Malawi. My whole family loves it. And here in South Africa all Defender drivers always greet as we drive past on the road. 17 years and 480000 km later old faithful is still going strong.

I've owned a Defender 90 300 TDI for quite a few years now. The old girl is 27 years old and just passed yet another MOT with no advisories. She's white and black and although not perfect she's completely original and I absolutely love her to bits. She's noisy and sometimes silly things go wrong with her but she has this amazing ability to heal herself before I have time to get my tool box out (go figure, but apparently I'm not alone in noticing this trait). MPGs at 28 mpg, not too bad for a heavy beast that's as aerodynamic as a wardrobe. When something does need doing, I can fix her with a basic tool box and I don't need computer diagnostics. She always seems to turn heads and my grandson is mad about Landys. Even though I've been offered stupid money for her, I'll never part with her, every journey feels like you're going on an adventure, my wife said what shall I do with 'it' when you're gone? (ain't getting any younger). I said bury me in her 🙂

I couldn’t agree more - bought my 2002 td5 a year ago with 191k on the clock which translates to almost exactly 117k miles , same as yours . Here in Cape Town they survive much better ,rust wise than in the UK understandably. Also had it remapped by alive tuning remotely with upgraded intercooler but no straight through exhaust - had to fit a ceramic coated manifold as well. Pulls like a dream now and cruises comfortably at 120 km per hour . All the paradoxical reasons you gave for loving it are spot on ,as I’ve been looking for the right one for a few years before finding The one and never regretted it ,even when had to part with rather large sums of money to get it spot on ( new clutch, new fuel pump etc…) . I own few cars ,but this is the one I prefer the most as my youngest daughter summarized it ;- “it feels like we’re going on adventure “every time she gets inside it . Brilliant review

One thing you should have mentioned that, they are just a giant Meccano set. Also i am a Defender TD5 owner too, owned a 300 TDI ( that was stolen and destroyed) cracking motors to drive and own. My mate never cared much for the 300 TDI, too much of a farmers motor. When i got the TD5, i gave him a go, and he said it was just like a classic mini to drive, setup wise. Putting into a corner though, he said yeah, don't want to throw it into a corner. But then again you can get the suspension to make it handle better, Even get a tripod going. The heater, you can get replacement vents now that make the bottom vents a lot more useful. I know that lad who made them and i even had the 3rd ever set off production to help with testing and review. If someone is looking to buy one, do a lot of research and the more standard the better too. You want a blank canvas not someone else's painting.

Have had three td5's, and one tdi300. So very utility! So full of character. So good off road. I use it as a camper, trailing a boat, pick up, and for farming. It is not a car. I see it as a sports tractor. So sporty, in a tractor way. Love it!

@@chisengangunijr5822 yes, three but ended up with one. The third one was quite expensive, but the others were cheap ex- utility vehicles from UK electric power company. Since production has stopped, the prices have gone up, as collectors queue to buy a used one. New modern vehicles are nice, but way more expensive, and complicated for utility work.

Have owned a 90 300 TDi and two 90 TD5s (all from new), my current one being a 2005 TD5 Hard Top with only 76,000 miles on the clock. Never had ANY problems with any of them. Would advise ditching the huge original steering wheel and replacing it with a smaller "Momo" - it makes the steering more responsive and gives you loads more room in the driver's seat. Also replace the wing-top air intake grill with a "Snow Cowl" (Bearmac) and take the time to clear all the leaves, insects and other crap from the rubber one-way intake valve (you'll be surprised how much there is in there) - this will give the heater a new lease of life (if there is no air no air going in there is no air coming out of the heater ducts). I enjoyed the video.

love it, couldn't agree more, but yours is a positive limo compared to the one I roll around in.... 1956, been in the family 35 years, no idea how many miles it has done, take it to the shops every week - maybe see you at Castle Combe in it, as it is also trackday support vehicle! Love it to bits....Steering? It's more like yachting, it's a challenge just to keep it going along a straight in a straight line, sawing away at the wheel. Brakes? well it slows down a bit, but since you're rarely doing more than 40mph its not to much of a problem. Ride? leaf springs...so its bouncy. Handling? just no. Engine? - runs like a sewing machine, never been apart in all that time, just fresh oil and plugs from time to time... wouldn't change a thing....

l bought my TD5 110 back in 2014. Since then l have used it for my business and have increased the mileage from 56,000 to 142,000 lt's only broken down once, when the ECU failed. l now carry a spare! l drive it all day, every day, if it wasn't fit for purpose l would have replaced it long ago. But it's a great vehicle, made for work, l've improved mine here and there with soundproofing, heated screen, cruise control etc but it's basically a standard 110 County Station Wagon.

I have a 2007 110, one of the early Ford TDCi or "puma" based models. I have owned it since March 2021. There are a few nice refinements but it's basically the same. The traction control system makes the offroad performance really fantastic. I'd honestly love to have a duel with a new Defender because I don't think it's really been done. More than anything the downside of a Defender is the comfort. Especially if you have wide shoulders, the B-pillar will dig into your arm. The handbrake also restricts your left leg significantly. The front seats are actually quite comfortable but otherwise it's pretty rough. The ride is very poor due to the solid front axle. As long as you can work around these issues and the fairly high maintenance costs, it's a fantastic offroad car :)
@AapVanDieKaap
@AapVanDieKaap 10 ай бұрын
I thought I'd give an update. I still have the vehicle and have had no real issues. It's gone from 207,000km to 230,000km now under my ownership. Here is what I've spent on maintenance: - Replaced front and middle door seals. The previous owner spent a lot of time in the desert and the rubbers were a bit tired so the doors didn't seal nicely. - Replace right rear half shaft oil seal. - Oil service x 3 Current issues: - The fresh air / recirculate mechanism seems to have broken - Spare tyre is bending rear door. This is a big design flaw. I have taken the wheel off for now. The door can be reinforced or a support hinge can be fitted.I want to investigate the former as I find the big hinges really ugly.

All those downsides can be easily fixed. I had driven a early 110 quite a few years ago for my work and liked it, that was in the early 70s. In around 2007 I decided to buy one and saw a 1997 90 300tdi with 36k on the clock, road tested it and thought - Wow! I bought it and still have it today. Upgraded the braking to a double diaphragm servo which is fantastic, wheel spacers, small steering wheel and so much more. I love it.

Each engine has it’s pros and cons. Lots of people won’t touch a Puma Defender either, and most of them have never owned one. People stick with what they like and what they know. 200/300 TDi folks don’t want the TD5 because it has some electrical stuff under the hood. TD5 folks don’t want a Puma, because it relies 100% on computers. Puma folks don’t want the others because they’re limited on the motorway by a 5 speed gearbox. Pick your poison, and let er rip! They’re all awesome at the end of the day.

Good video and nice Defender. There's something intangible about a classic Defender, something you can't quite put your finger on that makes them so appealing. They're not for everyone, but if you "get" them, appreciate it for what it is, nothing else will do. If you're thinking of buying one, then make sure you take a good test drive. If after the drive you're grinning like an idiot, buy one. If you're not, look for something else.

Great video and as all us Defender owners you love your baby, your completely right though with your analysis. Most modern cars you get in and it almost drives itself, a Defender is a drivers car, you have to drive it not be driven by it, but that's the enjoyable part, plus all the tinkering in the garage every weekend to keep the bloody thing going, but we love um and that's why we put up with them, my daily driver is a Nissan Juke, but if i have the choice i will always jump in the Defender first, i have a 2001 90 Station waggon as per my profile pic, she's my pride and joy.

If I drive in snow and she’s buttoned up tight, snow comes in around the door frames……..she is scarily quirky because: she DOESN’T leak any fluids, and the heater is quite respectable…….

What a great review! Defenders are very much a Marmite vehicle, you certainly have to make a conscious effort to buy one as there isn't really anything else that compares with them, with the possible exception of the Wrangler. Since 1980 I've owned a variety of vehicles, mostly ultra reliable Suzuki 4x4s, but in 2012 I decided to buy a new Defender station wagon. I like classic cars so went for a very basic spec, the main upgrade being a heated windscreen (which also came with heated seats as part of the Winter Pack, so I had to upgrade to cloth seats as well). I've never used the heated seats but the heated screen is brilliant! I use the Defender for daily transport including commuting and it's now covered 120k miles, it's averaged 29.7mpg over that time though it is driven with respect and has never been off road. I was very disappointed when I lost all drive one day at around 20k miles, the splines on the shaft that connects the gearbox to the transfer box sheared off which, I was informed, was a "teething problem". Hmmm, so how long do JLR need to make a vehicle before they iron out the teething problems? The only other real problem was it leaked oil from the gearboxes from new, and it poured out, but the supplying dealer fixed it under warranty and it's never leaked since. i'm lost as to why the mechanics at the garage can fit the seals correctly when the guys at the factory can't, in presumably better conditions. I was thinking of selling the Defender when the new Jimny was introduced but I'm so glad I kept it as (touch wood) it's been so reliable. I found this review whilst searching for something on Td5s as I'm looking at possibly buying an older, but lower mileage, Defender. Bitten by the bug? You bet!

The farmers favourite. People only moan about them because they are for agricultural use and off road and pulling heav loads. Not for doing 110 down the M5. Best vehicle ever made in my opinion especially the Td5

Great review👍 I’m on my 3rd 110. Previously had a 300tdi hard top, 300tdi tipper and now a td5. My td5 is about 160 bhp with disco transfer box and both make a massive difference. This will be my final defender but we’ll see how long she survives!

Even as a Brit I say we get to caught up in the romance of these, why not buy an l322 Range Rover, I had one (TDV8) and drove it through central australia, it never missed a beat, and it was unstoppable off road…. Most importantly I was more relaxed getting out of it than I was getting in. My experience with defenders are that they are slow, uncomfortable, and not really that much more capable.

Yes a car for devoted passionate lovers, owned 10 myself from 98-14 300 td5;pumor! My love affair ended and i sold my 14 at the same price i paid 16! Its fun,its charming but the build qulity is poor,the material is cheap bad,corrosion after couple of years,if you crash it’s neither fun or charming anymore! So basic and so little can go wrong even then it goes wrong! If i would go to a remote area i would be nervous for it breaking down! The chassis of defender is the car’s strength very robust as long its not badly corroded! Now on hilux boring but bulletproof and known for that all over the world ,the real deal! Sometimes i miss the shoebox though! Cheers M

Steering....improve with an RTC steering damper for £80 Clutch pedal, make 30% lighter with a kit that costs £25 Ride....improve significantly with Terrafirma 4-way adjustable dampers (set to soft) £300 a set Noise levels....£100 of sound deadening will reduce interior noise by 10dB at motorway speeds Measured on my 110 before 85dB after 75dB at 60 mph Cornering? The County doesn't come with anti roll bars. Fit a set, an hours work and around £150, transforms it. DO NOT be tempted to fit "uprated" anti roll bars. Land Rover knew what they were doing, fit the standard ones. Sound system? Don't put up with it. A set of better speakers will improve it no end for £40 and can be fitted in ten minutes. If you REALLY want to go to town, fit a set of later "TDCi" or "Puma" front cloth seats. Sure, they're black, but they look okay, and make long journeys a fair bit better. Keep the original seats for when you sell it.

Merci ! Julien
