Very cool, my uncle did something similar to his work truck a while ago. One recommendation : the flap that you need to lift up before pulling out the drawer is superfluous. You already have your back gate to act as the same thing. So i suggest that you take it out and instead make it part of the drawer itself. That will also allow you to more easily access items in the back of the drawer that you'd normally have to pry in between that door and the drawer.

I considered the option but the high drawer end on a low profile drawer looked a bit off. I get your point tho

I read the entire Ryan’s kzbin.infoUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan’s Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan’s Shed Plans.

The only thing I would add would be rubber washers on the underside nand some rustoleum like paint around the holes to prevent rust. LOVE the Defender, we cant get that model in the states, they were cut off in 93. Now all we can get is after market restores or the WAY over priced new model. Bouns points for it being a stick shift.

You are a veritable fount of creative, spatial and useful building, Carl Rogers. If/when there might be updates to your Defender, you'll have worked out the back door panel and " electrical-, camera-and charger bits, too. Glad you and your instructional, amazing, scientifically sound/researched projects/builds documented in videos have once again resurfaced. Stay healthy, safe, warm and moderately productive. These videos, your humor and explication are joys to witness. Almost like being there.😊❤

I travelled around Oz back in early 2000’s in a 60 series Land Cruiser. The early days of duel battery systems in cars. One thing I look at today with lithium iron batteries is wow that would have helped in so many ways. Lovely job as usual. No sure if you already have one, grab yourself a rail square, track saw becomes a table saw and 90 degree mitre, if not a slower one. I bought one and that thought goes through your head why did I not get one earlier 👍🏻

Great idea, well executed. I'm about to do a similar design for a 1st Generation Honda CRV which will continue to serve as a passenger car, but must have a similar, but removable, setup for woodworking tools as this car will sometimes be used to deliver woodworking classes to rural communities. Quite a challenge design-wise but your design has given me some ideas. In your case, the only change I would have made would be to put the back cover hinged so it opens down below the drawer instead of upwards as it is currently. This way it won't hinder access to the back compartment of the drawer.
@scottspropertyservices6877
@scottspropertyservices6877 Жыл бұрын
Or just attach it to the drawer front. Then if the height of the drawer front was an issue for while it’s open, he could’ve cut it in half horizontally & add a piano hinge so it folds down to get it out of the way. Also im not a fan of the lockable drawer slides because it adds another thing to do with both hands while trying to get to a tool every time you open it. The soft close runners have a self locking functionality to them because they pull the drawer closed for the first bit. I have them in my work trailer for years & iv never got to the job & the drawers open. Even on unsealed roads. Great design & execution though. Especially with simple tools

Carl, I’m always impressed with how well planned out your projects are and this is no exception. You mentioned on Patreon that this was your most expensive project and I assume it’s because the Defender is in good mechanical condition and a relatively recent model. My only suggestion is that you might want to put some removable cling film on the back windows so prospective thieves can’t see into your vehicle when it’s parked (yes, I have a suspicious streak!)

Be careful - having tinted windows is a double edged sword, yes it can stop the casual person looking into your vehicle - but thieves will casually smash them to look anyway - and if you've got nothing in there, you've got a smashed window claim on your insurance. I'm a handyman and occasionally keep tools in my vehicle (Berlingo) and I DO NOT have tinted windows - any prospective thieves can see there's nothing they can easily sell, so they move on. Having tools in "dewalt" or "Makita" ans ESPECIALLY "Festool" boxes is GUARENTEED to get broken into and stolen. If you have these boxes, remove them. Have a look into the vehicle smash and grab epidemic in San Francisco - locals have gotten so fed up with having rear TINTED windows smashed DESPITE HAVING NOTHING INSIDE that they have now taken to parking thier cars and LEAVING THE VEHICLE BOOTS OPEN SO THIEVES CAN SEE THEY ARE EMPTY !!!! I'm not joking. I strongly advocate AGAINST tinting windows if you can just remove the tools, and there's not enough in there to be a problem.

@@rafezetter8003 Good point. Dirtbags will smash out your windows for the Festool boxes alone…w/o even containing any tools or valuables.

looks great, can't beat a landrover in so many ways! You might find it a good idea to put the sound insulation on the sides and rear door to help quieten the ride a little further. I know someone who lined their rear door with sound and heat insulation and then just covered it with some plywood to make it look tidy, perfectly serviceable!

Tilling an entryway and finishing a basement, and building a deck. It was so hard but so fun too. Now my loving husband passed and I am back in Korea. In the U.S., when I would go on the road with crafts I made to sell at a crafts fair in another state, I bought something called Inland Marine auto insurance. It was in addition to what I had already for auto insurance. You might want to look into something like this, if for nothing less than peace of mind. Here in the states, public places near the highway or places that get a lot of daily tourists attract junkies like flies on poo-poo. BTW- your video was perfectly done. Very professional. No facial close ups, no stop action talk to the camera shots, everything perfectly filmed, well thought out design. Well done. 🌋

Carl, I came across your videos sometime ago, and watched all of them, until you dissapeared from KZbin a while back. Very impressed with the work you've shown. @8:37 I was glad to see that while installing the metal drawer slides, it would appear that you were installing a screw into every mounting hole on both the cabinet side member and on the drawer side member. It is very important that this be done on all drawer slide installations, no mater what the application will be. If this is not done, the drawer slides will not be able to meet their advertised weight capacity, and could also void the product warranty on the slides if they become damaged. One other thing about drawer slides, when calculating the exterior width of a drawer, you should allow 1/64" of additional clearance between the interior of the cabinet side and the exterior of the drawer side. This will help the slides to function properly. If there is not enough clearance allowed, the slides can bind against all of the moving parts and cause the slides to fail prematurely. It is nice to see you back, and I am looking to see more of your great work!

Awesome build Carl. Nice details and great finish. I have a similar setup in my working van, a Ford Transit Connect. I have used the red [300 KG] sliders from SOTECH / Junker, a Germany company. Excellent customer service as I had an issue with one of the sliders. So if you ever ..... they'll just send you a new one. I have 2 similar big drawers like yours. One at the back and one on the side slide door. And at the back I also have a smaller tall drawer where my Makita tool boxes fit in stacked 3-4 high with 4 cases deep into the van. So I have a enclosed Makita toolbox wall which I can pull out 1.6 meters. Works perfectly. I run this setup for almost three years now and the sliders still run like butter. And mind you, as a carpenter who works in all weather, they do get a beating with water, sand, heavy loads from tools and gear and the occasional co worker who does not know how to unlock the sliders. 😅 And I did not use regular plywood but the red 18 mil concrete form plywood. More resistant and with a smooth top surface. Keep up the good work. Love your channel. Cheers. 👍🎈

I would worry about the security of all the equipment you have inside. I would be adding alarms of some sort and also put a secure form of locking on the box from being pulled out or from being able to open the front access panel. Also, perhaps something that would cover the other items you have so you just can't look in and see the stuff inside.

What a great build! It'd be great to see a follow-up after a few months of use to see what you might tweak, if anything. I suspect if it were me, I'd want to change the door that covers the drawer to hinge from the bottom instead of from the top. That'd allow access to contents in the drawer much sooner since the open door wouldn't be blocking it. Either that, or I'd forgo the door entirely and extend the drawer face to be flush with the top of the box. I'd also make sure to use silicon sealant around the bolts that pass through to secure the box, if only for peace of mind. Water has a way of accepting a challenge, and it'll be hard to know if it's making its way between the metal bed and the box. All said, still a fantastic build.
