Land Rover Series 3 Steering relay rebuild. Installing a new shaft, fibre bushes and seals.
WARNING: this video is purely for entertainment purposes only. if you decide to copy this method or use any information from it, you do so entirely at your own risk. The steering relay has a spring inside of it that is held in compression. Opening the steering relay will cause the spring to release its stored energy with a high potential to cause harm or injury. I recommend that you don’t try this but if you’re going to ignore this warning and do it anyway then please wear the appropriate PPE. It’s up to you to risk assess and determine what is the appropriate PPE is.

Well done for not understating how dangerous this can be, I still have a decent dent in the roof of my shed from when I did mine. Great video Thank you

Hey! Thanks for the comment. Yeah I wouldn’t bother rebuilding them if decent aftermarket replacements were available. Unfortunately they aren’t so we’ve got to take our chances. They’re not to bad if you take your time doing them though. Thanks for watching. I’m really glad you enjoyed it👍

Superb video, this a dangerous undertaking with the spring contained within, Geoffrey Croker did a video on this containing the spring with a spring compressor and tiewraps he used plastic ones stainless examples would be more secure. Good to see there are still people undertaking these repairs despite the H&S blanket ban on everything in the UK!

Hi, thanks for the comment! Yeah I did watch Crokers video…I’m a big fan of his work. They are a bit of a dangerous undertaking but if you take your time it can be done safely. The worst bit is compressing the spring so you can refit it to the body. I can’t say I’m a fan of the cable tie method though. At least in my press if something gives it should just fire the spring downwards as the top of the shaft is held quite securely in the end of the ram…but I understand not everyone has a press available to them the same as mine. I’ve just found another new old stock shaft so I’ll have another one to rebuild soon just to have on the shelf as a spare. Unfortunately the new old stock shafts are getting hard to come by nowadays so this will be the last one I’ll do for a while I think. Cheers, Kev

@@RetroModified I must admit I think your method is much safer and controlled with the press, compressing springs is always a nightmare whether it is this or suspension springs. Good luck with the rebuild and channel great content and good that you are supported by your son , great that this info is passed down through the generations.

Started working on my 1952 Land Rover today which has not run for 30 years, this part is completly stuck and I was looking for a video on whats inside. Dont think I will do the job myself but it has been very helpful to understand how it works, thanks for that!

Hey! Thanks for your comment. I’m really pleased you found it helpful even if you’re not planning to rebuild it yourself. That was the point of the video…to either let folk decide yes I can have a go at that or to decide nope it’s not for me. Wow 30 years sitting is a long time. Hopefully it was under cover. Mine sat for 15 years outside which didn’t do it any favours, it still started up and ran fine with minimal effort which I was surprised at. Good luck with your rebuild!! I wish you all the best👍

What are the symptoms, which indicate time for a repair?

Wow! Dodgy doesn’t quite describe it. And I thought coil spring compressors were spooky. Not sure I’d put my face that close. Just saying. Braver man than me. Good job rebuilding the steering gear.

It would have been nice if the tripod was a lot closer during the rebuild.👍🇬🇧
