Wet shiming is an interesting method. I'm sure it's very strong too. Just a bit messy. It does seem like less hassle than sistering the studs. I think I might try something like this next time, but use construction adhesive.

Don't confuse time in trade with experience. Completely different things. I've started out in the industry when I was 17 - I"m 59 now. So that's better than 40yrs. However I had 10 yr period where I didn't do more then a few jobs. But at the beginning of the pandemic I went back into tile full time, however my experience level was greater than most. I worked for several production companies when I was younger, then after getting licensed I did a wide variety of work, commercial, high end custom, marble, granite, travertine, etc. But I found upon my return that the industry had shifted quite a bit and my previous methods - pretty much mud everything - needed to adapt as I could see from videos like yours that some of the newer methods were better, especially the way shower floors are done. But regardless, just because someone says they have 30 years experience doesn't qualify them at all. Probably better said 30yrs of in experience. I put in 2'x4' tiles all the time, but that's because I have enough experience to know when something is better rather than different then from what I'm used too. One thing I don't understand is the metal trim, totally cheapens the look of the product in my humble opinion. Love your stuff however!

What is done if Kerdi board is not flush where meets the drywall do to wet-shimming for leveling

Good question, we fill the gap between the drywall and trim edging with hot mud (20 minute drywall mud). We either sand then paint, or caulk over and paint. It blends right into the existing bathroom drywall. For a shower like this, it has to be plumb for our glass enclosure.

We add it everywhere on the wall that is off and then tap down accordioning for flat and plumb 👊

Kerdi board ZS hardware comes in 2", 3" and the standard 1 5/8" . Though some distributors may only stock the standard ones.👍

Surprised original contractor did not just purchase a tile draw cutter which would accept large tiles and when or if necessary use a grinder and cover edges with Metal edge trim. Why do you seldom use WEDI pans and wall board? Although costly I like the wall boards but do not like the drain attachment to pan.

Nice work. In my region, the tradition is to just correct your plane tile by tile. Yes, it’s total crap. No money is ever allowed, and nobody wants to deal with the design considerations around building out a plumb shower wall in an off plumb room. It’s quite sad really.

The next time you use the wet shim technique it would be helpful to spend more time on the subtleties involved. Your treatment of this fundamental part of preparing the walls for tiles seems to have glossed over too many details. For example, what mix (how wet/dry)? How soon do you attach the boards? How do you control for plumb as you screw the boards down. If you go too far and have to back it off, there will be a gap behind the board? Kerdi specifies a certain screw depth, so standard Kerdi screws can't be used, or what?

Clients say build me a shower base and tile it for the same price as a 400 no maintenance base. I’m in. So of course its 80% acrylic choice and 20 custom. Its just a regional thing I guess❤ Hopefully you decided to not use that car seat in the van anymore. Front seat occupancy for a child is highly unsafe.

Modified or Unmodified thinset? Using GoBoard for my application and their "help" line says thinset. There is a difference and you're merging wood with a waterproof backer board. Any thoughts on which is better?

I’ve been a GC for 20 years and dealt with hundreds of subs. I realized years ago, if someone brags about how long they’ve been in the trades, they are usually terrible. Existing is not an accomplishment or a selling point.

Do you not need to wait X amount of time for the wet shim to dry, before you screw the boards in or even start tiling? Won't the boards move on you a little bit when you start tiling? Great video!

We let the thinset set up/cure during our lunch break before we install tile. We rarely have problems doing this

@fartpoobox ohyeah You run fans and mix a very dense fast setting mortar that sets in in 1-2 hours. it will not be hard but it will be stiff enough to the point where small pressure wont move the board.

truth is you don't need a tile pan that is bullshit they can easily outlast a tile pandue to high failure rates they are a very good choice due to tile pan failure and possibly cheaper, properly installed

7:49 I feel like you are trying to hide something here. Also, if this is anything like drywall installation, you don't want a super tight fit between your sheets. you want enough of a gap for the "mud" to get in and "glue" the two pieces together to prevent movement and cracking.

Do you believe in the 5:10:1 on thinset mixing/believed potlife? I was told that if I mix half speed for 1min after the 10m slake, pot life can be extended like almost a half hour.

We come across this fairly often. Typically remove fiberglass insulation, and add rigid insulation. If it's only a two-by-four wall, might not be the best idea.

I do somewhat understand putting the niche in a ‘random’ spot. Sometimes you have things in the way, switches, plumbing, venting, wiring, load bearing wall, ect. This didn’t appear to be the case here, but I’m sure you’ve seen it. I also have a love hate with kerdi board. I wish it was stiffer. It flexes between studs a little much for me. Good job, keep inspiring and showing how it’s done!

@@lobsterstrange The bigger the tiles the more skill and prep is needed. The substrate has to be stiffer, flatter. Large tiles are hard to cut without specialized tools like saws, snap cutters, trowels for 3/4" square notch, etc. Think about a 1/8" grout line on a 1 foot tile. You have a lot of wiggle room there. Now imagine that with a 24"x48" tile, next to nothing to play around with. Think about a bump in the floor and what that would do to such a massive tile if you tried to lay it. They are also physically a beast to move around, needing suction cup handles, etc. Backbuttering is of course way harder too as it's like a table :). For many reasons it's harder to lay really big tiles.

Another great video. I used this wet shimming technique, entirely Schluter, for one of my bathrooms. Important to have the walls plumb and flat. It's also so crucial to ensure the valve and other walls are squared with the back wall.
