the thing about poetry is that it's open to interpretation. To some people, it doesn't make sense or "sucks" while to others there's deeper meaning. The concept / topic was thief, and it's applicable because the poem was about a clown who steals smiles ... not unlike our protagonist Danny Duncan. He acts the fool / like a clown to steal smiles (as well as the hearts and eyes of us viewers). The writer portrayed her first impression of Danny along with the topic word "thief" kinda cleverly, not only comparing him to a clown (which he is, basically a modern-day clown, but entertainer / comedian sounds better in today's society), but also a wolf, perhaps because of his shaggy hair but maybe also because of his confidence and aggressive attitude in social situations (which I suspect many of us viewers envy) He's a wolf "behind [the] camera lens" because that's how he is to us, maybe the camera gives him confidence to do these stunts (to make it entertaining for us) but we have no idea how Danny is in the rest of his life. I don't think he can always be on, and I'm sure he has gone through or goes through his fair share of sadness and downs that are personal and not apropos his social media image. Moving on, maybe she writes "it's easier to laugh these days than cry" because millions of us watch Danny's videos or have other entertainment outlets in order to enjoy ourselves and laugh, but in reality half of the world doesn't have these simple luxuries. Thus the "upward curve," or smile, "covering downward step," or reality / truth of the world. It's good to have things to distract us, don't get me wrong. But, in reality, not all of us act like Danny... society just wouldn't function with only entertainers. We need policeman, fast food workers, doctors, poets, farmers, etc. Why is it that most of the population from developed countries can enjoy these luxuries like watching KZbin and laughing while billions of other live in poverty and work tirelessly to make ends meet? Poems are supposed to make you think. Maybe I got some stuff wrong but that's ok, like the other poet said. Also I know Danny was joking like he usually does, but I think the poem was pretty good considering that it was made so impromptu. It's really hard to be a poet nowadays, so I'm glad Danny supported her by buying some work. The thing is, the more you do something the better you get. Just by writing poetry as a side gig or hobby, she is leagues better than 99% of us who don't write poetry, like me. PS I don't even read poetry but I appreciate the art form. @@mattromano8996
