Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. Today, we return to the Solomons to cover the direct aftermath of the Guadalcanal Campaign, as the Americans prepare to embark on a new offensive operation against the Russell Islands, in an effort to prevent the Japanese from using them again against the Allies. But that’s not all, as we’ll also return to the Aleutian Islands, one of the most forgotten theaters of the Pacific War, to cover some new developments that transpired during the last few months. Thus, join us as we delve into another exciting episode of the Pacific War and talk about the landing at Amchitka.

Brilliant as always! I had read one of informal hearings and saw an ex-Japanese soldier said "At this moment we were holding our ground on the mainland US." So I could understand a little why IJA/N were completely scrapped both legally and practically after the defeat, although I'll never consent about that

I was born in 1951, so a classic baby boomer. My father turned 17 the year the war ended, but most of the fathers in the post-war, suburban housing tract where we lived had served. My father-in-law served in the US Army Signal Corps in the Aleutian Campaign, participating in the retaking of Attu and Kiska. Like many men of his generation, he was reluctant to speak of his war service.

About this video graphic: Not sure if it was an accident, but there was it seem lot of "shadows" on your characters and others kind of bubble. This clutered the map too much IMO. I like how you cover the Aleutians once in a while as well as the China/India theaters as they not always covered in WWII History. Usually the focus in Europe and Pacific itself. Ernest King tapped Kinkaid, a capable proponent of inter-service cooperation, to be the North Pacific Area commander to replace Robert Theobald, who found it so difficult to get on with others - especially commanders from the Army and Army Air Force - that even King noticed. In addition to being "aggressive, simple, and direct," Kinkaid was also cool under fire. After the Battle of the Coral Sea, when asked about being on the bridge of the heavy cruiser Minneapolis during a 17-minute Japanese air attack and whether he had experienced fear, he remembered: "You haven't got time to emote. There isn't time. A commanding officer may be scared - in fact, if he has sense, he's scared - but he can't show it, with all the men around."

This is the first time I've ever heard mention of the P-43 fighter or B-18 bomber being used in the Aleutians. Most sources had those aircraft designated as unfit for combat within a few months of the start of the war. Is there a source on their use in the Aleutian campaign?
@jacobjones4766

The 11th us army airforce was mostly equipped with outdated equipment including a b10 bomber initially. The 18th pursuit squadron had p40s and p36s im not sure about p43s tho. However b18 bolos were there and used by the 36th bombardment squadron. The us navy also had some old pby and kingfisher planes. The 72nd heavy bomber squadron later came with b24 liberators f4 wildcats and a host of other aircraft would also become available. This is all from the us navy and airforce websites. Alaska troops were always equipped with 2nd rate mostly obsolete equipment. Even the tanks used were the obsolete marmon Harrington ctls4 tankettes.

I still wonder at what the war would've looked like if the Japanese had been more aggressive in the Aleutians. It could've pulled more resources from the southern Pacific where the US was beginning to gain momentum and would've possibly allowed the Japanese to hit the US mainland with air raids. It would've just delayed the inevitable, but even so, I still wonder.
@ftwcrazyman
@ftwcrazyman Жыл бұрын
It would require a complete rerouting by the IJN (not IJA) from their focus in the South Pacific, but that would mean a complete change in their raison d'etre for war in the first place (securing resources from the Malaysia/Dutch East Indies after the IJA's failure in China/Russia and the following disastrous US embargo on oil that cut 90% of supply). It's a fanciful dream
