The good thing is that there are public reviews of businesses, which offer transparency. I live in an apartment complex and, although I may move out soon, as I’m inheriting a home, I anonymously wrote a review of my landlord, in a few choice places, not too long before they sold the business. As they sent out quarterly newsletters, I could tell that my review became an office topic and they swallowed hard. I doubt they lost any significant money, in the sale. But, bottom line is, just like tenants and potential tenants can’t really do anything about what these businesses charge, the landlords can’t do a thing about those buyer beware reviews. As my landlord also pulled a stunt, giving 5 minutes notice for an inspection, if I move out, I’ll be taking them to court.

Our landlord charges a $200 transfer fee if you move from one apartment to another in the same complex. We all get charged for a special trash truck to come and pick up the trash SOME tenants just drop on the ground next to the dumpster instead of putting it IN the dumpster. We also pay for heat, water for the whole complex not for single apt use, gas, regular garbage pick up, sewer and storm drain run off plus handling fees for all that. We have tenants who waste water by letting it run in their apts, dump trash everywhere except in the dumpster and ALL OF US PAY FOR THAT.

Ever since new management took over, in our complex, although I got a water/sewer bill, when I renewed my lease, they said to ignore it. But now, they just announced they’d be installing new water meters. I think I know what that means. I’ve been living here for a long time, so my rent is not as high, as for newer tenants, but I’m hoping to get out. It isn’t just all the things you’ve mentioned here, that are likely to come. It is the arrogance of the staff, who like to act like they’re running a prison. No one likes those people. That alone will get some people out of here. Then renting will be management’s problem.

@user-us3xi7se5b
@user-us3xi7se5b Жыл бұрын
Corporations already bought up most housing/land. Most private owners now are baby boomers, inherited, or wealthy. Most cities are also struggling with rent due to airbnb along with empty office spaces. BUT let's say these problems don't exist yet. Why not regulate the mega corporations and put a price ceiling instead of rent control? They could price it by location and sq ft and take quality into consideration. Price ceiling would be higher than the equilibrium so renters and landlords know not to charge/pay $8k for a two-bedroom. All they have to do is nudge the market in the right direction. We learned Keynesian economics because prices didn't adjust fast enough during the Great Depression. We're about to make the same mistake. While prices adjust, people and families are out of homes, while communities degenerating. We complain about the homeless population all the time, it's time for the government to step in and set some guides.

@@bngr_bngr Who told you that? Inflation is due to covid stimulus and companies jacking pricing just because they can get away with it and "blame it on inflation." Don't forget that most land/housing is corporate owned. "...price ceilings often carry long-term disadvantages, such as shortages, extra charges, or lower quality products." Those are the accepted disadvantages of price ceilings by economists. Empty office spaces, empty airbnb, and overpriced housing is the perfect scenario to implement price ceilings. Over supplied, but isn't meeting the demand due to price. Landlords seeking under the table payments sounds like we need some laws to protect renters similiar to how we protect business owners and consumers🤔

Just a few years ago, when home prices, mortgage rates and rents were low, I screamed from the highest mountain for people to buy houses. but "smart" people didn't want to be tied down to a house. Now all those "smart" people are screaming that rents are going through the roof, the price of homes is insane (if you can even find one to buy) and mortgage rates are high. Don't expect it to get better. My advice though is the same: Buy a house that you can afford as soon as your able. When I bought my 1st house a 15 year fixed rate mortgage was 13.75% and there weren't many houses available. My rent was $225 a month. We bought a house for $40K. 20 years later we sold that for $170K and bought our current house for $300K. 20 years later this one is now worth about $650K and it's paid off. My monthly nut now is $600 a month (property taxes) when renting a similar home today would be about $3,500 a month.

The rule FOR ANYTHING out there, however, is that, whether it’s work or homeownership, if you don’t own and are not the boss - you are the loser. Always been so and getting worse now. When you live in someone else’s property or work on a job, it was NEVER designed for you to win, no matter how much you thought it was an “exciting job opportunity” or “nice place to live”. The purpose and design of business is to make money, by taking advantage of others. Ugly, but true, even on the smallest level. The point of being in business, increasingly, is to have minimum to zero overhead and to have customers (including tenants), living off ether. The purpose of creating policies and laws is to make you comply with predation - quietly and respectfully. I don’t like it and I’m glad I’m not young. Because I have fewer years ahead of me, to have to contend with what’s going on. You’ve been in a wrestling match since you were born. They just don’t want you to be aware of that.

$500 for ALL apartments? Talk about unfair. My expenses for each apartment are close to $300. I wish the media was willing to report on the crazy increases landlords have had just since Covid. Mine have been up to 300%. How is this any different from being angry with grocery stores, selling food at the crazy prices they are now? It doesn’t. They have to pay hyper inflated prices now. Landlords have had the same issues with inflation. And grocery stores weren’t forced to give people free food for years like many landlords were. This is a government issue ti deal with. Inflation hit us all. If tenants justify getting assistance for food, amenities, and healthcare, then why shouldn’t the corrupt and greedy government give housing assistance to all who need it, and not put this burden on landlords? Especially the ones who worked their tales off to buy, restore with blood, sweat and tears, in many of the average landlords, fixer uppers, so to supplement our measly SS checks in retirement. The previous owner ripped out the whole floor and the smell was in the subfloor. He tried to dig it out somehow. I didn't have a contractor yet and I didn't think I could deal with it. So I had to buy a smaller place and I'll have to deal with that

Some people when they are evicted and thrown in the streets by the terrorist parasites have to leave everything they own because they have no way to move it. NO landlords shouldn't have no say whether a tenant/investor should have a pet or not or be able to extort them for their pet. The tenants investment huge amounts of money into landlords property called rent the landlord can take that free money they received and put it into the property.

When that civil eviction does go through, it will enter public record and be easily searchable by any leasing agent running a check. If you are sitting on enough cash to buy a home, you have no worries. If you are not, renting anything in your name for the next few years will be almost impossible. As a landlord, I would never rent to anyone, or let any adult live in my properties that had an eviction in the last 7 years. Do you think I'd want to be stiffed for 18 months?

Landlords have a right to a small percentage of profit? Really, I thought we have a capitalist system and the landlords are allowed to make as much money as they want. I didn’t know our government has socialized housing. Does the government cover losses for landlords when tenants don’t pay? Does the government pay for new roofs, insurance, painting, new windows, fix the plumbing, fix the heating, replace AC units?
