Landon Donovan provoked international beef with Mexico by trash-talking, peeing, and winning

Mexico vs. the United States has always been a good (if often one-sided) soccer rivalry. But in the early 2000s, it a whole new level thanks to a particularly pesky American: Landon Donovan. He scored goals, he talked trash, he ... peed on a practice field. It was a lot, and it made a historic feud something else entirely for the better part of two decades. Enjoy this beef of one man versus an entire nation.

I’ve been waiting for this one! I’m named Landon after Landon Donovan! My dad was Salvadoran and my mother is Mexican, so one day they were watching soccer with my mom’s family. My uncles were making fun of my dad for the Salvadoran team being, not great, and my dad made a statement. “Watch, Landon Donovan is going to score and the US is going to win, and I’m going to name my next kid Landon.” Donovan did his part in the World Cup match, and my dad held up his part of the bargain. Here I am!

I think you missed the point of that interview response from Donovan - he wasn't saying, again, "mexicans are less than us because all they have is soccer" he was saying "now I understand better why they resented the US - because Soccer is their main sport, and has been forever, while the US essentially just started playing in the 80s and doesn't care as deeply about it"

Besides Donovan, I think during this era the US national team became incredibly orderly and precise, so it turned into a nightmare for Mexico playing them. Games always felt the same, Mexico would apparently dominate but not be able to break through the US's orderly team, missing the few clear plays they would get, and slowly get frustrated. Then when time came, the US would start launching counter attacks and take advantage of the errors caused by frustration to take a clear win. Even the Mexico wins were always by the seath of the pants, while the US would always win by being clearly superior tactically.

I disagree, the majority of games that we’ve had won and lost, we’ve dominated on the field, even the last summer losses. Football also entails luck, if we would finish our opportunities at finishing, it wouldn’t appear as you’d think it does. But we’re both entitled to our opinions so need for a big debate. May the best team win next game. Good luck

@@mexicandaywalker4672 the other big difference on this rivalry, is who the sore losers are. If US loses, they just look like they are sad, if Mexico loses they get Mad. US players do not run as much, they are demoralized. Mexico players, they start grabbing, kicking, like Donovan said, playing dirty. That is the one thing I never understood from Mexico, they have been the better of the 2 teams and have had probably 100% of the time controlled all the games, win or lose. But they always, always resort to what they always condemn, playing dirty by some Caribean teams. They actually start acting the same. Donavan said a lot of crap when he was young, but that crap was not a lie, it was what it still is. They have really bad sportsmanship.

As a Mexico fan, I so loved, and at the same time, hated Landon Donovan. In 2002 he exposed Mexico and to this day, that game is one of the worst games I've ever had to watch, even worse than than the infamous 7 - 0 loss. In Korea Mexico showed themselves to be arrogant, talentless, and pathetic sore losers. When they saw they couldn't break the lock the US had on the game, they simply began fouling with the intention to injure. It was deplorable and embarrassing. It was a turning point for Mexican soccer. Today, Mexicans respect US Soccer, hoping to emulate the success good planning and investment can bring. Mexicans have a general opinion that the US will eventually eclipse Mexico in soccer at all levels. I love Landon because he was the only one with the courage to say, "Hey! FU, don't treat me like that!" The USMNT today has much more talent than Donovan's squad ever had, but they have no backbone. As soon as they play anywhere outside the US, they flinch and lose the game. Donovan would have stared any of the CONCACAF teams in the face and said, "You don't scare me. Watch me score on you twice."
