I feel like after watching this, I could go out and buy trace paper and some markers and do this exact same thing. I absolutely could not, but the fact that I feel like I could means this video is the highest level of educational and professional. Seriously, incredible work. I wish I was this talented!

You can do it too trust me! Just start from step one and go from there. I never thought I could do it either, but I did, and I did it well. Sometimes I replay the videos I was watching and just literally mimic the exact technique, touch for touch, until I understand the movements. I swear, just start from the beginning and don't worry about throwing out lots of trace paper as you make mistakes and such, its all part of it.

My like goes to you because you showed me something even my architecture classes could never teach me right. The bubble planning. At the beginning it was so easy to understand! Hope it had been like that back in school, would've saved me a lot of time "designing" in autocad.

Hey can you clear my doubts on following questions? 1. How will I show the difference in levels in a site plan ? For example the project we are working is on 1:500 scale and the site is approximately 3acres. 2. How should I render the pergola, and perforated pavements in that scale? 3. And how should I highlight the fountains and amphitheatre so that it will take to the jurors attention ?

Love all the of these videos. How would you include if you were to be planting underneath the trees with shade plants? Or would that be a separate sketch? Or if you weren’t doing so many trees, but instead flowerbeds and perennials?
@EricArneson3 жыл бұрын
For detailed representations of plantings it is best to make a planting plan in autocad in black and white for clarity. For graphic plans like this it is sometimes useful to show the larger trees as transparent and make a shadow to represent the tree being above the rest of the plants. This is a strategy I use in my more current renderings and you can see it in my latest rendering videos.

Hey, Absolutely loved your work! Could you explain the difference between Chartpak AD markers and Copics? Which one makes a better option for landscape rendering and why so? Thanks in advance.
@EricArneson4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The main difference is the chemical in each that transfers the pigment. Chartpak is Xylene and Copic are alcohol. I like Chartpak better since they seem to be "juicier" and have bolder pigments as well as being super easy to blend but they are considered to be somewhat toxic so they should be used in a well-ventulated area. They are both good. I would suggest trying them out and seeing which one you like :) Cheers!

I’m going to use your training so that I can plot out my gardens that run around my back yard. I need to list and plot out my various perineal plants and trees for height, color, continuous blooming times, and bird attractiveness. Organizing will allow me to control limited space more than costs. I live in Buffalo NY, with challenges of living near wildlife preserves and having a large windy lake both take a toll on the vegetation. We’ve had several bouts of snow this second week of May.

Can you share what kind of markers you’re using and kind of paper you’re coloring on? I have copics and I can’t find any paper that blends the colors as well as yours did in the video. Velum is the closest I could find but it still wasn’t as smooth as your video.
@EricArneson4 жыл бұрын
I am using Chartpak Ad markers on regular trace paper. The chartpak markers are Xylene based which blends much better than alcohol Copic markers
@JBrotsis14 жыл бұрын
Eric Arneson I need to get those kinds of markers. I’m using Copic. Unfortunately, it’s so hard, near impossible, to find paper that’s printable that also allows markers to blend smoothly.

How do you make sure your designs are to scale/realistic when initially drawing them out?
@EricArneson4 жыл бұрын
You should always set your drawing to a scale with a measuring device like a Architect or Engineer Scale . Make sure to choose a scale that fits the paper you are working on by scaling the largest measurement first to fit on your paper.

Are you still using tracing paper for the marker rendering?
@EricArneson4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I do, Sometimes digital renderings faster and sometimes hand rendering. it really depends on the project and the amount of time I have. I usually stick with hand sketching on trace for concept development since it is much faster and more fluid and then move on to digital after I have nailed down most of the design details.

Thank you Eric for sharing! You're a great artist! 😍 You've really inspired me. What base paper or board do you lay down under your tracing paper? Why did you choose Chartpak over Prismacolor? I'm not sure which brand to invest in.
@EricArneson6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! The base board was a piece of foam core just for this video so we had a nice white background. The thick pen was a pentel sign pen amzn.to/2M1HpA4. I chose Chartpak because most of the classes i took for landscape architecture used chartpak and in my experience they blend better than the Prismacolor/copic since they are xylene based and not alcohol. I would try both at the art store and see which one you like better. another thing i like about the Chartpak markers is that they last forever. We have some in the office that work great from 1996!
