🇨🇦/🇺🇸Hehe... I had seen the Thomas Heaton vid that you're referring to. Funny. But you make an interesting point. I do think, however, that when you are NOT including foreground, that you don't need to consider the "nodal" point of the focal length. And, CONVERSELY, if you ARE including very close foreground then you need to divide your zoom into SEVERAL nodal points and use a different rail position for each. (I use an adjustable gimbal)
@EwanDunsmuirImages3 жыл бұрын
Hey Christopher. LOl - yes = ) I think you are right that when you shoot with nothing to converge... there is no need to the middle to far distances. The close up foreground type shooting with wider angles defeats my output purposes for doing them and moreover when you try multi row with wider lenses, with or without a focus stack!- Oh my! Hope you are well. Thanks for your interaction. Much appreciated. Regards, Ewan

I’ve only ‘just’ bumped into your channel ~ it was the word pano and the cloud inversion that caught my eye. I’m an amateur photographer and currently use the Nikon Z7 II. I watched and listened intently to your explanation. Panoramic from LRc / Ps stitching is my favourite. Tend to hand hold, but drifting now to Tripod + tripod leveller as you mentioned. I ve just bought a geared head and used it for 1st time today on a short hike (Scottish Highlands). I don’t use a rail / nodal point method. Pivot with camera body as axis point which with care provides no parallax, but as you say immediate foreground is cropped out. Portrait mode has been my method ~ hand held is easier in portrait mode. But; landscape mode provides a different aspect / not considered it until now. I liked your easy, well thought out explanation and the pano was amazing. Thank very much: I’ve just subscribed and Liked.

Gorgeous images! Didn't need the nodal slider for those images though... when the subject is as far away as those mountains were and there is no foreground, there's no need to worry about parallax. Stunning photos!
@EwanDunsmuirImages2 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam 5D - yep you are right about the parallax at middle to far distance. It was never meant to be a VLOG and I just turned the opportunity to showing the 'generals' about Parallax and convergence with Panos. Wherever the subject sits, its a good habit to get into. You will find however that of you apply the nodal point test to a 160mm lens, there is some correction still required (if you were to introduce a foreign subject as your nodal line, if you can overcome the plane of focus/ OOF, albeit very slight. I didn't go into that in the vid, as - as i said, was never mean to be a vid. LOL I was pleased with the images though, the one of them, gaining a National Geographic award, which is always humbling feedback. I printed this one at 17:58 @ 1.8m on the long edge for a gallery recently and i must say - its stunning that big, on nice Cotton Rag to 16BIT and to archival standards = ) I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Kindest regards, wherever in the world you are. Stay well Ewan

@Ewan Dunsmuir Images - Landscape Photography Ha! Almost... I grew up on Lewis, but I also lived in Thurso and Wick as a child too, so my ear for accents does get a little confused at times! I'm just an amateur photographer with no pretensions to be any more than that, but I do try to take decent photos when I'm out and about climbing, mountaineering and hill walking. This means I do inevitably end up taking panorama shots, so this is what led me here. I've just bought a new camera body so I've been hoovering up tutorials on KZbin while waiting for the rain to stop so, no doubt, I'll work my way through them all, in time. I've subbed now, regardless. Thanks again for the benefit of your experience.

Every video I learn something from you...thanks and well done. I'm looking forward to deploying these tips on my next time out. You mentioned the importance of a black point and I don't recall the reasoning? Thanks again.
@EwanDunsmuirImages5 жыл бұрын
Hey Brett, Thansk very much. The reason for the black point is on account of your optics being in the middle to far distance, and as you are not grounding the image with foreground interest... you need to find a scene that will have a black point in to to help ground the image and draw the eye in, with out which... the pano is a little lifeless and can be confusing. Hope that ehlps. Thanks very much for the comment. Regards Ewan

When you say pano's need a "black point", at least generally, are you saying that for contrast purposes or are you talking about something else? I'm relatively new at this and just trying to learn. I enjoy doing pano's but your video has convinced me I really need to invest in a leveling head. I can waste 10 minutes getting my legs level. Thanks for your work in putting these video's together.
@EwanDunsmuirImages4 жыл бұрын
HI Steve, they need a black point in the image to ground it. Where Panos dont have this black point to do this, they just can appear flat, and need that contrast to make sense of it and give it a focal point of interest. E

Hi Ewan, I really enjoy watching your channel, its relaxing and informative and fun all at the same time! After 30 years of landscape photography, I truly believe you have to create the image by feeling what it is you are looking at, understanding the essence of the location and I think you do that so well. One suggestion is to use the "Contain crop" button on your cropping tool in Develop module, this maximizes the image area automatically and prevents the inclusion of slivers of white around the border. I am yet to get a nodal bracket and wonder of a Tilt Shift lens will also give some advantages, perhaps a topic for another of your videos? Cheers, Guy
@EwanDunsmuirImages3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Guy. That would indeed be a good topic for vid as it would indeed do the same job, but in a more expensive way! LOL. I am currently looking at Hasselblad H6D100C with the HTS1.5 TS adapter which would be incredible. Re the whire solver border around my images. The images that i proce, when finished, carry a three canvas white border which I deliberately apply in PS, to state - "THE IMAGE IS FINISHED" and to not mess around with it at a later date. I generally do all my post on the same day, so as to replicate what i saw as near as I can. I leave the canvases on there mostly, as these are the final images. I leave the white canvas around there for printing, and giving my printer some options for be spoke prints at size. There is sufficient data at 200MP in the images to allow me to go crazy. I appreciate you noticing though and mentioning it. If however you are talking pre export into PS, then yes I agree! I really appreciate your feedback Guy. I m slowly getting onto my groove with the whole Videography thing! = ) Regards, Ewan

Hi Ronald. Thanks for your comment! On top of the ballhead, I have a double clamp and a 300mm nodal slider. Cool film Ewan, really cool! I love the 6x17 ratio for panos and try wherever possible to crop to this when I have converted to DNG. In fact, i love the format so much, I am often disappointed when it won't fit and have to go for another dimension. I notice that you don't seem to subscribe to this particularly but are there certain ratios that you try to go for for consistency throughout your collection? I have noticed something too on your following! You might not have the subscribers yet, but the amount of comments you get for for the following you do have and views you get make for impressive stats! Looking forward to the next one already! Hey Simon - All depends on the scene and what the comp dictates. Looking through the website images, which have 'made it' are in the region of 2-2.6:1. I was thinking after the vid that that 4 shot horizontal Pano at 50% overlap on 645 (or 4:3 format) is actually 8:3 ratio. Pretty darned close to 16:7 (Smiling face emoji) I will have to remember that when shooting, as I too - love the 16:7. Thanks for your kind words Simon. Always means a lot. Ill crack the code one day... LOL. Ill begin working on the next one straight away. this will be another weird one for me - when down in the south Island, I tried to challenge myself with shooting in non perfect light. @EwanDunsmuirImages5 жыл бұрын
Hey Roy - Thats a blooming good point which i never covered off. Yes, I do. Because Im shooting at f11 up and the focus plane is in that middle to far distance plane - the focus distance is on one tiny little click back from infintiy which would allow me to capture stars... if i was into that. I do use the longer focal length, on that focal plane to throw objects in the near foreground out of focus to allow the eye to train on the aspects they are meant to... such as this i guess. www.flickr.com/photos/eos1969/37990842314/in/dateposted/ Thanks very much for the question. I didn't understand everything: what is 'blackpoint'? And howcome the camera was pointing upwards (wasn't it supposed to be parallel to the level setup of the bottom part of the tripod?)
@EwanDunsmuirImages8 ай бұрын
Hello there. I try to make sure that my images have a black point, or near to a black point as visually (when printing and hanging large panos) your image requires some 'depth to its dynamic range which helps, ground the image visually. As long as your tripopd is level, you can get away with your camera not being on exactly the same plane, as long as you are willing to 'converge correct' or 'puppet warp' in PS during your post processing workflow. Keeping the camera absolutely level is easier, but then you have to shoot at a wider focal length to get the frame you require, and then crop in. Hope that helps! Regards, Ewan

Wouldn't putting the camera in portrait mode every time and zoom further in on the subject give you more detail (and more shots), as you will use the long side of the sensor to max the resolution? Btw, you are a rare 645z shooter like me :-) Just upgraded to the gfx 100s with their two zoom lenses, but I still love the images the 645z creates. I plan to keep using the 645FA lenses with a converter, they should.render great film like shots. AND Great explanatory video. Thanks Ewan.
@EwanDunsmuirImages4 ай бұрын
HI there, yes you are right. Zoom in and get more detail, but unless you are printing pretty large... the interesteing point is why do we do that? I used to do it routinely, to get more detail, but even as I commercially print my stuff to 2.4m regularly... Im not really sure i need to . I use the portrait more, to get a wider field of view as i dont carry multiple lenses with me on shoots often. You raise a really good point though, and is probably worthwhile including that in a future video, as i plan to do two vids on panos soon. One being 'Panoramas - Why' and the other 'Panoramas - How?' Re the GFX 100... blooming nce clean files with that backlit sensor, so well done and good for you. As i negotiate the minefield of my next camera, it will likely be a still bigger sensor, either HAsselblad or Phase oNe, but I will keep my 645Z as i have grown to love these files so much! We 645Zers need to stick together. LOL You take care and thanks for your interaction. Regards, Ewan

@@EwanDunsmuirImages Yes, why do we hunt for more resolution? As a former gallery owner, clients never scrutinised the pixel count but rather the artistic value a photo carries. On the other hand, Ed Burtynskys works have massive resolution. I met his technical advisor at the Saatchi gallery and he explained the effort they put in getting a much detail as possible, and I think in this scenario a super high resolution plays a major part of the excellence in his large prints. It's partly because of his work that I'm inspired to achieve a similar level of details and sharpness (good luck to me), hence my new equipment. The 645z is truly wonderful, yes you and I need to start a fan club :). It's softer and more film like. Mine unfortunately occasionally malfunctions by shutting itself off during long exposures, and I also need to set the date every time I take out the memory card, something is not right. And Rich doesn't seem to offer any service to these cameras any longer. The Hasselblad X2D 100C seems to have better colours than the GFX but may not be as usable in the field as the GFX. The pricey Phase One is a no brainer if only image quality matters. Looking forward to watch your upcoming pano videos, meanwhile I'm scratching my head on how to attach the nodal slider between my camera and tripod! Keep up the great work you do. Jesper
@EwanDunsmuirImages4 ай бұрын
@@bluejesper - Hey Jesper. Thanks for your well thought out and detailed reply. You raise a good point as a curator of work and the artistic value over resolution and as i read your response it got me thinking to content i will likely include in the Pano-why video. One of the reasons I continue to shoot pano often with long focal length to illicate that detail, is that it is interesting to watch purveyors/ client look at my stuff in a gallery or pre purchase situation, in that their viewing distance is no longer 6,7,8 feet, but 12 inches. It seems ot tell a completely different narrative. I did sell a print of Auckland skyline ot a client at 2.4m, who bought it as his penthouse flat was on image,a nd on his balcony, he could see the shape of a person (just) and he determined that by the time and date of shooting that this would have been him. This was approximately 1km away. Incredible huh!? www.flickr.com/photos/eos1969/40936997780/in/dateposted/ Tells a completely different narrative. Il maybe see if i can accomodate this into that vid in some way. Thanks for your time Jesper. Regards Ewan

@@EwanDunsmuirImages Great job on capturing that beautiful image with the massive resolution-it's mind-blowing what a panorama with a high-res camera and software stitching can achieve, unthinkable just a few years ago. Quick question about the nodal slider: How crucial is it to use it for distant subjects like far away mountain ranges, or say, a glacier 100m away? Couldn’t I just mount the camera on a ball head in those cases and still get the same result? Also, would there be a minimum distance for objects in the frame that would require a nodal slider? I’m simply asking because I prefer to carry minimal gear while trekking and also to avoid unnecessary time-consuming setups.
@EwanDunsmuirImages4 ай бұрын
@@bluejesper - thanks man. Whilst every lens will have a nodal slider at every focal length and focus plane - the farther away you go, the less crucial. You can of course, therefore - just shoot from the axis point of the ball head and get away with it. I dont do that as i often hike several hours in, or wait for hours (some times days) and take no chances when it comes to stitching as that would be... a little frustrating. I always wanted to do pano format images in film, but clearly wasnt possible, unless shot with a 617 format camera (which i chose not to buy). New tech has changed the way we treat photography for sure. Kind regards and thanks again. Ewan

@@EwanDunsmuirImages : Thanks for the reply, bloody bumble bee, lol. That now make sense with the noise. 17.52 Image , for me I would like more cropped of the top, but when I look back and compare the original and then cropping it, might throw the balance out a bit, but it's all personal to what works for you, and it's a very nice image, you should be very proud of it. Many Thanks for the great video and tips.

Ich liebe Panorama Fotos, nur lassen sie sich nicht universell verwenden und es braucht das passende Motiv.

I agree. It is however a form of slowing the digital process down, as it takes some thought particularly around framing. I hope this is the right medium and image for a a pano Thanks for your feedback and regards. Ewan

Naturally, professionals have been and done that. As I have got older, the idea of carrying all of that stuff you have remains at home as they are too difficult to carry, especially when travelling. Your title suggests how to assemble pictures into panoramas, which is okay. Some purists use panoramic film cameras that offer 138 and 120-degree angles of take and no stitching involved. I'm sure you would know this. The contradiction is that objects close to the lens are just as important as those at and beyond infinity.

Thanks for the comment. yup agree. Always shouldve bought a film Pano camera... but sadly never did. Founf the Fuji clunky and Hassy was just a 35mm, which didnt give me the image quality i needed. Beautiful camera though. The thought of stitching 6x6 503 files into a true vetorama on film, was way too complex for my simple mind and so, sadly... i had to wait for digitisation and cheat a little! = ) Kindest regards, Ewan
