LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY I changed my camera From Sony To Fuji GFX

I changed my camera system that I use for landscape photography. So I was recently off for a couple of weeks due to illness so I used this opportunity to switch my camera system. Now, why have I changed my camera? Well for me it was not about megapixels or anything like that it was more about the general feel and user experience. What it comes down to for me is do I feel more comfortable using one system over another and that then allows me to be more creative and ultimately focus less on the equipment and more on the art. So I changed from Sony across to Fuji and find the whole layout and experience much nicer to use. Now ultimately that suits me but it may not be the right choice for others this is something that is personal to you.

I am in the process of changing my system as well but for me it's Micro four thirds. My wife and I have been noticing the weight of our FF gear for some time and discovered the Lumix/OM System stuff and tried it out. We love the much reduced weight and we're very impressed with photo quality. Does it have drawbacks, sure, but doesn't everything? It is putting the fun back in photography and that is what counts.

Glad you are back out and heathy again. The Fuji GFX system is really fantastic. I have been using the 100s for about a year now (had the 50R prior) and couldn't be happier with it. One thing that is amazing with the Fuji medium format is the shadow recovery. I had to learn to shot more to the left and get the highlights correct in camera and then pull the shadows up post. Enjoy the new system. BTW, the pano version of the photo is my favorite.

I am new to GFX as well I have Been blown away how good it is. I got a super deal with a 50 S mark two and two lenses for less than 7000 bucks after the Black Friday sales and rebates that whole kit would’ve cost me 10 or 11,000 bucks six months ago and I had a great six months selling calendars and other work that I’ve now launched myself into GFX and OMG. If you haven’t use the GFX you won’t understand but if you have you will it’s that simple it’s just that good mine blowing for landscape photography… One other GFX owner said to me that when you get your GFX and start taking photos He said it will feel like you are in the photo when you are looking at it and that is so true. The menu system on the Sony cameras is crap 💩….it’s confusing 😮…..I’m loving my new camera ….LOl You did what I did. I sold off some of my Nikon gear and some other stuff as well. I’ve ended up with a Fuji film XT5 and a GFX and that is my pair of cameras and it’s brilliant. The XT5 is 40 megapixels of pure joy and is a guy lightweight camera and then the big daddy comes out to do landscaping working Photography so I’ve got the perfect combination now and I feel at peace with my camera gear. Now I was always struggling with my Nikon camera so I could never get the blue and green right in landscape. No matter what I did but soon as I started using Fuji, the colours just a perfect I’ve barely need to edit my photos.

@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk and thanks for the other message mate. I love the camera and it's good that you've been still using it so we know it's a good workhorse as well. Just updated the firmware today as I didn't realise that it was the old firmware and I noticed the focusing was a bit quicker tonight as well. So happy days for me.

The change over to a new camera system is a daunting one. I recently moved from Lumix to Canon, I made all the usual excuses saying oh I'm happy with my old camera etc but since moving I wish I did it a few years ago. So glad you are recovering from Covid, I had it last week, luckily just a mild version of it and excellent news about the F-Stop sponsorship. The channel is growing well.

The sensor in the GFX 50sII is one of the best and has stood the test of time well. Shadow recovery is excellent and as you say very little post processing work is needed to obtain a final result. It's used in the Hasselblad X1D series as well as the Pentax 645z and GFX 50R.

I saw your video on should I change cameras and I am not surprised you have gone for a GFX. I use an XT4 and came from Canon but came from film cameras before that. What I like about Fuji is the setup and find I am shooting mainly in manual because it is so easy. I have noticed a lot of top landscape photographers have switched to the GFX and are getting very good quality images for large format printing but are happy with what I have got.

Thanks Peter yes I have been luck however I sold all my gear to pay for it so up to now hasn’t cost anymore than I already spent. One of the reasons for doing it now as well was because things are going to be tougher I probably won’t be in a similar position soon so I took the opportunity now. At the end of the day though it’s still just a tool and the same results can be achieved with most cameras these days. All the best man 😊✌️

Glad to see you are back on your feet 😄 I can relate to your view on the Fuji camera - the usability is awesome. I have the 50R. The only thing which I struggle with a little is having to do focus stacking very often. Although photoshop does a good job - when you have thin grasses in the front and a tree in the back, it's a nightmare (to me anyway - but I'm still learning). Thanks for the video Paul!

Having switched from Nikon DSLR around 3 years ago to Sony I can only say that I am super happy with it still. I have the camera setup so everything I need is on the custom dial or a button press so I can access anything I need really quickly. The Fuji looks nice but the thing that puts me off anything medium format is the size of it. I carry everything I need in a Tenba BYOB10 camera insert and it is tiny. I have 16 to 200 mm covered and all my filters / batteries etc in the bag as well. The insert can be carried as a shoulder bag or put inside a Osprey hiking bag or inside a small camera rucksack depending on how far I plan to walk. I got peed off with huge bags and heavy gear :) The fun for me is to be out and about enjoying the walking and not lugging around heavy gear.

I hear what you are saying Dave, at 64 years old, I was concerned about the same thing, but I had the opportunity to spend a little time with a Hasselblad X1D, which is about the same size as the GFX 50S II/100S, and found it to be surprisingly portable, and while the weight, including the lenses is substantially more than the Nikon Z6ii system I usually carried while hiking, it wasn't as big of an issue as I had expected, about the same as your old DSLR kit. I did really like the medium format and eventually purchased the Fujifilm GFX 100S, the GF 20-35 f/4, GF 45mm f/2.8, and the GF 35-70mm Paul is shooting. I usually hike with the 20-35mm and 35-70mm, and use the 45mm f/2.8 for street photography. Cityscapes with the GFX have especially been outstanding, I couldn't be happier. I will eventually replace the GF 35-70mm with the GF 45-100mm, and probably add the GF 100-200mm to fill out the range I usually shot landscapes with. The medium format is not for everyone, and because I am still learning the new system, I find that I am more thoughtful and deliberate with my shots, and because of this, I tend to spend more time composing the scene, which may account for the more satisfying results, and not so much just the switch from full frame. I find that while the extra resolution of the 102MP sensor of the GFX 100S does not make a lot of difference with landscapes, I have been amazed at how the extra resolution and DR increases the range of the 45mm f/2.8 prime with street photography and it has quickly become my favorite lens for the GFX in my kit.

Good to see you back Paul but please don't push the exercise too hard right now. It's too soon if you've still got some chesty symptoms going on. Pushing to get your fitness up now could backfire on you in the long run. There's no harm in letting your body recover for another week or two. If you're really itching to get out though you could always try some "drive-by shooting" from your van or even some coastal shooting with a nice walk in the fresh air along a beach. Just not lots of hill climbing just yet. Take it nice and easy until you're fully recovered. Take care 💙

Cracking cameras and unrivalled image quality ...... shame the lens range is a bit idiosyncratic and limited. Having said that I'm just liquidating all my old gear and sticking to 100% Fuji. They really understand photographers and both firmware support and warranty/repairs are first class. Consider adding the 80/1.7 ...... it fills the gap in the zoom range, is really fast and super for portraits. Despite being MF and a bit bulkier I can fit 2 GFX bodies (with lenses attached), 23mm, 32-64mm, 80mm and 100-200mm in a medium shimoda backpack and it's not overly heavy. I've assigned the aspect ratio choice alone to the Q button (the Q menu isn't really needed once you have set up custom buttons and profiles) so I can bring the crops up with a single button press with my thumb and then just toggle through them with the joystick to compose.... works really well.

Hi Paul, I hope you haven't bought a 102MP camera body, because if you have there's going to be some serious pixel envy going on both on UK shores (Thomas H) and Canadian shores (Gavin H). You and Adam will have to team up and join forces again in BC, this time against the likes of a certain Sony A7R IV user, as he couldn't keep his loaner GFX100S...perhaps that's why he's leaving the area due to starting to be outnumbered by Fuji users ;-). Enjoy, looking forward to the video. PS There's some serious envy from this photographer as well :-)
