Landscape Photography in the Desert

In this final video of the US Southwest Road trip, Chris Vogeli and I photograph the beautiful desert mountains near Phoenix, Arizona and get lucky with a beautiful sunrise and an amazing sunset. Although we both struggle a little bit with our compositions in the cactus landscape, we both come away with some really nice images.

Scotland is stunning especially the west coast. Glencoe is incredible and only 20 miles away or so away from Ben Nevis. I am fortunate to live just south of the border in the Lake District which some say is even more stunning.

The back lighted choea cactus is an amazing subject for folks like me who visit from elsewhere. I have a number of photos, most closeups taken in the 1980s, mostly with standard lenses (50mm) on slide film. One of the biggest problems in taking these photos today is the universal use of zoom lenses. Coatings aside, the modern zoom lens like used here cannot control the flare you suffer from shooting directly into the sun, thus the soft, low contrast images.

Randall Stewart yes I agree completely. It’s unfortunate that the dreaded lens flare is al but inevitable. It’s tough to shoot and is soft and low contrast, so I try and make it more about the mood of the image to help make up for the limitations of the lens. Thank you so much Randall for the insight! Robert McDaniel I use 2 benro tripods. One is a travel angel that is more my backpacking/hiking tripod. The other is the giant 48CXL tripod and low profile ball head. Chris just bought a new Gitzo that she absolutely loves, although I’m not quite sure the model. I’ll check for you!

Is it me or were the images blown out in the highlights and no detail in the sky?

atomikmaster1 no there are images that are blown out. It’s ok sometimes when shooting into the sun. Especially if there are no clouds in the sky. But you’re right, most of the time in landscape photography blowing out the highlights is a no no unless it’s the mood/look you’re going for. Thank you for watching!
