I totally agree with this comment. I was getting quite discouraged with my photos. I followed all the tutorials, got my settings right and ended up with photos much darker than I wanted. This video finally shows me that it's not my photography skills but my lack of processing software and processing app knowledge that is at fault. It's kind of a relief.

Although lower ISO's generally do give you higher dynamic range it is not an absolute. For instance Canon crop sensor cameras have better dynamic range at ISO 160, not 100. Some pro digital cinema cameras perform better at ISO 800. If you want to push your camera to it's highest Technical limit, you must understand what the camera you are using needs.

Thanks so much for the video! Was great to see the set up before the photo. Wouldn't it have made more sense to bring a spare battery rather than a spare camera? What would a second camera enable you to do?
@onzbrau
@onzbrau 2 жыл бұрын
I think he forgot the extra battery because Pye doesn't usually shoot landscapes so he's not familiar with waiting for a long time, cold temperatures also drain the battery. Spare camera is for other reasons and much less common to bring. I usally bring 2 spare batteries, it's a good measure in case you forgot to charge one lol (or didn't have time)

I recommend buying on a second hand market, if you're just starting. You can get the same gear, for a lot less. I've had several cameras and lenses that I bought that way, and it wasn't until I decided to get a full-frame, pro-level camera that I went with a completely new setup. (I have a Nikon D750, but that's about $2000 new.) The D3300 is also a great option, if you're in the neighborhood for a camera of a similar size to the D5200, but perhaps want to spend less. The relative output on those is about the same, but the D3300 scores higher in low-light (meaning you can keep the ISO lower for less noise.)

@sbrazenor2
@sbrazenor2 8 жыл бұрын
Scott, film would be nice if it wasn't such a pain in the ass to deal with. (You'd either have to do your own developing or pay through the nose for it.) At least with digital, I can shoot 10000 pics and not have a single added cost until I print.
@scottpilgrim258
@scottpilgrim258 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I completely agree with that, however, I genuinely feel that people should learn with a full manual film camera as this person is a beginner. The reason for that is because film is a pain in the ass, your first pictures are going to be most likely out of focus and not correctly exposed, however, through the pain of waiting an hour for your photos to be developed only to see your first attempt failed miserably is like a slap on the face to make you feel like you've got a lot to learn, and you improve over time. And I know even after learning exactly how to calculate exposure in your head and learning to focus well, it doesn't mean you will take amazingly pictures, you have to learn about composition, framing, lighting, ect, ect. However, I do feel digital photography makes everything alittle too simple and you don't really get the meat and potatoes of photography, but it's all personal opinion I suppose. :)

What kind of camera do you have? (The mount, sensor size, etc is important.) Also, with landscape lenses, you really have to look at what you want to achieve with your shot. I have two different concepts when I shoot landscapes. Sometimes I want a vast expanse, where I use a 14mm lens that captures a huge area. Sometimes I want a small section of the landscape, or a feature of it, and I use a 150-600mm to really get close and remove any distractions. I use a full frame sensor on a Nikon D750, so that means that if you're using an APS-C sensor, your equivalent to that might be about 8mm-10mm. (The area your sensor takes in is going to determine how wide a lens actually is.) Rokinon makes some really cheap, but quality lenses. They are all manual, so you will need to manage focus without autofocus, and depending on your camera, you might even need to stop down the aperture manually as well. Depending on your camera, you might have the option of using 'vintage' lenses, from older cameras. (I can use 35mm film lenses, for instance.) So the basic two questions: What kind of camera are you using? & What is the type of scene you want to capture? With the exception of viewing angle and depth of field aspects, you can also move in and out with your camera to get different perspectives. You can also use a basic 18-55mm kit lens for landscapes, but they're a bit soft on the focus, since they're a variable aperture 'general use' lens.

People don't just give away expensive equipment for nothing. Work for it. You'll appreciate it more and then you'll use it more. You don't need anything too fancy. Another side trick, if you want to get into photography, I find that it's 80% composition and 20% gear. Get a used camera from a thrift shop. (I recently got one from 2001 for my collection for $3.) Once you get really good with that, and you've earned some money for a 'real' camera, you'll produce much better pictures.
