Thanks Ray, awesome video, and very interesting photos, you’re so right about being aware of things like the clouds. I have been wanting to get a sunset on the highest mountain in Alabama, which is about 1 1/2 hours from my house. I would really like to be there in the mist of a storm with lightning, Have you every taken any photos of lightning? Ray, I hope that you have a great week, take care !
@VisualArtPhotography5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jules. thank you and yes, many years ago I took a few photos of lightning with varying degrees of success since it was really only luck that let me acquire some half decent shots. If I do it again I'll purchase something that will trigger my shutter automatically when the lightning flashes. Enjoy your weekend and take care.

Great images and advice as always Ray, I always look forward to viewing your videos. I do think it may be worthwhile advising photographers to make sure they don’t inadvertently put themselves into their pictures when shooting in the golden hour, as appears to have happened in your last photo

Hey Adam. Thanks and your point is 100% correct but I should say that it was not my shadow in the frame but a gnarled tree stump. I must admit it does look like a photographer's shadow. Good eye. Have a great day.

How do you take meter reading for correct exposure in different situation? Specially in low light situation? Please make a full video on it.

Hi Ray, Great tutorial as usual. I really like tip#5; look for long shadows. I used to shy away from conditions that included shadows, but I now see how they can be used to create depth to an image. This is why I like your channel so much. You always come up with great tips to share with your followers to keep us inspired. Roger

What aperture and shutters speed are you using to capture such amazing results.
@VisualArtPhotography6 жыл бұрын
I was using between f/11 and f/16 with mostly a wide angle lens for maximum depth of field.
@VisualArtPhotography6 жыл бұрын
The shutter speeds were relatively slow so I was using a tripod.

Sun is appearing around 7 here, so not too much of an early rise to catch shots over the Channel. Interesting how light plays on the white cliffs and then how much they change within seconds - Great to do and makes one even more appreciative of a full English breakfast - great video Ray, thanks again and take care:)

Ohh I’d love to be there a shoot the white cliffs. Must be amazing. Thanks so much for the nice words and I wish you a wonderful day. Full English breakfast you say?

The famous bit with the cottages is best at sunset, however, as long as you know the tides you can get directly beneath - due to erosion you have to careful, we're losing tons at a time and tourists are being warned about standing too close to the top edge. Who knows maybe one day you'll make it - your land is absolutely amazing in it's contrast - English Breakfast - totally unhealthy but cooked well, absolutely delicious after a cold start to the day:)

I saw a stunning thumbnail in my recommendations and thought "That’s a great image", it was only then I saw it was one of yours. The Photographer's Ephemeris is the landscape photographer's best friend, tells you sunrise and sunset times and shadow length and you can see places that are to far away to check out before going. I use the satellite view to look for accessibility, nothing worse than travelling 100 to find out there’s no disabled access. I also have apps for tide times, weather, chances of a good sunset etc. You can have them all in one app but I find it easy to have several open to flick between them. Also put all your photography apps on an old camera to preserve the battery on the one you are using. When shooting sunrise and sunset you can use the sun to give you a sun star. However, blue hours shouldn’t be overlooked for some great shots. I’m a big believer in getting as much right in camera as possible so I use my filters when I can, especially the polarise. I will also bracket shots, use luminosity mask and if it’s under .75 of a stop difference I will use software grads. Anything over that looks strange in the way I over used HDR does. We have a massive range of tools at out disposal and we should use them all. At the moment I’m struggling to get out, but when I'm well enough this is my favourite time of the year here in the U.K. though it’s coming to an end now. We have some frosty mornings, autumnal colour and those wonderful golden hours where the sun seems to hover before deciding to fully rise adding more gold to the scene. I do a lot seascapes and coastal shots and much prefer the sunrise for its peace and virgin sands, not full of footprints etc. Absolutely brilliant video Ray, about one of my favourite subjects and one I'm passionate about. Thank you, now if you could see your way to doing bird photography next week...

Mark, thanks so much. You are always so kind and supportive. I can almost hear the excitement in your voice when you write about this type of photography and I applaud you for trying to get “right” as much as you can in-camera. Thanks for your great tip on the app. Sounds really helpful. I hear your incredible passion for this great medium so I wish you the very best in all your photography. I’m sorry to hear that you are struggling to get out. I hope that changes soon. Mark, keep well and again thanks for the wonderful tips.
