Damn, Colonel….I am impressed! That is one helluva slope! But I think I am more impressed that you made it a “family gig”. And the end result looks somewhat “magical”, in that the steps curve down the slope, rather than making a straight line. I have a similar slope…I’m in western Massachusetts. I’ve been “on the fence” on how to proceed, but your video has given me hope on tackling this long overdue item on my ever growing “honey do” list! (Funny, how since I retired, from both Navy and as a federal LEO, my “honey do” list didn’t retire at the same time!). Bravo-Zulu, amigo, a job most certainly well done!!!

When you said unfortunate nothing in our property is level i felt that hahaha… there was real frustration there and I recognized it as I share the same frustration hahaha

Great idea, it looks amazing. Searching for ideas to tame my backyard slope. Obviously when lumber was cheaper...ohhh the raging envy!!! 😂

Before lumber mills began to keep gouging prices, using a reason of supply/demand, to make up for lost (pandemic) revenues? It's a US problem.

Thanx for the video. I was hoping to make steps two 4x4s high and I see that is what you've done. Nice work and really enjoyed the music as well.

What did you anchor the first bottom step and top step into?
@darrelldement1423 Жыл бұрын
Each step overlaps the step below it and is attached with landscape nails. The bottom step is a few inches subsurface for added anchoring. We poured concrete into the top step. We mainly did this so the family could leave their handprints. 😎

Why did you not just dig them in and use the soil on site mixed with dry concrete. Would have been same work but more sustainable. But looks great was just thinking 😅
@darrelldement14235 ай бұрын
Good question. The soil was mostly rock and I felt crushed granite would be both easier to use and more eye appealing. Also, felt I could always add concrete later, but not the other way around.

How did you fix it to the hillside? Rebar? Footings?
@darrelldement14234 жыл бұрын
cdrichmond good question. Each step is fastened to the step above it with landscape nails. And, each step’s placement was hand carved into hillside with pick axe and masonry hammer. So those two forces are what hold everything in place. Haven’t had any movement at all. Thanks for asking. I hope this helps.

With cost of 4 x 4 treated this would cost a ton of money now. I like the idea though.

What are the dimensions of the each step. I know you said 4 x 2 in the video but it just doesn’t look like it is it more like 4 x 3

Thanks for the video, what did you put in all the other steps excluding the concrete one? i am trying to do similar project but confused if can cover steps with paver stones to withstand Canadian winter.
@darrelldement14234 жыл бұрын
Arshdeep Singh Bhatia ... we filled in all the steps with crushed granite. It’s natural and porous.

@@carltonbreezy CHUD you sure do seem to know an awful lot of details on this project. Cost, measurements. Very involved in these comments. Looks like, and have you been stalking? Going through their receipts in the trash bins? Are you planning on cereal killing the next project??

Did you use rebar?
@darrelldement14234 жыл бұрын
Carl Pfister no sir. I did not use any rebar. I have done some other landscaping on my property where I used rebar through the lumber and into the ground. This was to both join two landscape lumbers and anchor them firmly to the ground. The stairs did not need anchoring as they are all interconnected. They each are nailed to the step above them. Together the whole set is held firmly in place by this method.

Where did you use the concrete?
@darrelldement14234 жыл бұрын
I only used it to fill the very top step. It was completely unnecessary. I could have filled it with crushed granite. However, I wanted our girls to put their handprints and date. 😃
