This is a bummer. My 2023 3rd gen Toyota Tundra's 3.4 liter twin turbo engine has been recalled. In this video I convey my thoughts and concerns. I'm not thrilled about this and it has me genuinely wondering if Toyota's reputation of reliability is going to be the same. Time will tell. I love Toyota, but dang, this sucks.

The only reason I am a Toyota owner is for reliability. I truly believe this is just the beginning of the recalls. I have a feeling they will recall every single tundra made. Def not a bullshit debris issue. It’s an engine issue, will we ever know? Not sure .

It'll be pretty half hazardly performed. Toyota will underpay technicians while they are frustratingly performing these recall repairs. Engineering flaws are left to be punished to the consumer and service repair. This is how it's done. I know this because I am a mainline technician performing Warranty repairs.

I’ve been a mechanic for 40 years.. This problem has nothing to do with the brie being left in the motor. It would never be this consistent across-the-board even the Lexus that’s made in Japan is having the same problem. This is 100% design, which I believe Toyota had good intentions, but failed miserably. The only alternative is to buy back all the trucks they sold with this defect. I can’t imagine buying a vehicle that expensive now even after the recall is done the owners will still be worried. They will have a problem say 50, 80, 100 K down the road. Well.. where to begin. I'll start with I have been a huge Toyota fanboy till now. I was going to drop a video similar to this. I had a 23 and 24 Tundra. When my 23 was totaled out i replaced it with a 24. I heard the reason for the engine going out back then was slag from the casting process was not cleaned up and It was corrected for 2024s. However we are still seeing 24s blowing up too. This in back of my mind and all the creaks and rattles I had led me to getting rid of my 24 and washing my hands with the idea of owning a 3rd gen Tundra for years. For what the truck cost 70k almost in my case, I just couldn't do it. It's a shame really Toyota trucks are not what they were. They have become like all the other brands or so it seems anyway. I kick myself for selling my 21 TRD pro bulletproof Tundra. The 22 4runner my wife has is sadly the last of the great Toyota trucks I'm afraid. So I guess what I am trying to say is , I know how you're feeling right now. It's a shitty feeling.

Just a suggestion for anyone interested, take an oil sample from your 3.4L v6 tundra and send it to a reputable lab for oil analysis. Use that as your starting point and continue to sample for several oil change intervals(5000 miles or less). The lab should have data on this engine for normal oil contamination to be expected. Your sample will be compared to the normal standards for this engine. If you see abnormal wear metals in your samples rise with subsequent oil changes you might have something to worry about. Oil analysis will probably be the best way to gauge your engines health and warn you of impending doom base on main bearing wear metals if your engine is starting to fail. This might put some minds at ease if your samples come back within normal standards until Toyota can properly address this matter.

@@ThomperBeThompin the 24 is having some emissions issues but they just pushed a software update. I’m still on the 3.0 pages. My poor dealer experience was absolutely local. Mileage the 3.0 kills the tundra but, i run Fuelly and my cost per mile is slightly lower on the tundra vs the 3.0 when you factor in def and fuel filter changes every 15-20,000. I’d absolutely buy another as it was flawless and 700+ mile range was common. I’m averaging exactly 19.0 combined in the tundra. Under same use the 3.0 sat at 23.8 lifetime over 56,000 miles. Probably 10-20% towing and 50% hauling 1-2 motorcycles in the bed. The Chevy guys are having way more transmission issues but i hadn’t seen that on the 24’s yet to maybe it’s ironed out.

You are expressing all that I feel about this situation. I don’t tow that often but we do take long trips of several hundred miles. I bought my 2022 Tundra 1794 STD bed in July of 22. It has 27,000 miles on it and other than some minor occasional wind noise from the RR door gasket and occasionally squeaking rear brakes it’s been good. This engine has been used in the non US market for several years and this issue does not appear to be present in those markets, so this limits it to a US production issue. If it’s an engineering issue then Toyota will have to repair or replace nearly 200,000 engines, costing them nearly 2 billion dollars, and that’s before the inevitable law suits. The sad truth is where do we go? We will surely take a bath on any trade in deal, and frankly most of the other brands have their own power train issues. My neighborhood has many light truck owners of all brands. Several have had transmission or engine issues, GM and Ram, in particular. It’s a sucky situation. Toyota learned a lot about PR and engineering adjustments in the early 2000s. I don’t think they will repeat those mistakes, which is why they are quick to put out recalls before the government steps in. All we can do is hope and pray the fix is truly a fix or that fewer engines are actually affected.

Just traded my 2024 in on a 2019. After seeing vids and hearing stories of affected people enduring the engine failure I didn’t trust the truck with my kids in it. Mine also had fuel gauge issues, back window rattle, and at intersections it would lose power right after acceleration stranding me in the road for a second or two. Took it in for all these issues but without TSBs and no codes thrown they couldn’t do anything. Blaming shavings in the block would be a great way for Toyota to pass blame and costs to the engine manufacturer. (If it’s a different company which I don’t know.) They are losing trade value which I just learned all about, multiple dealers I went to here in Phoenix have lots full of new Tundras with $3K to $5K in discounts already which hurt my trade value. With people just learning about the recall it will probably get worse. If you decide to trade it I wouldn’t wait too long. Good luck I feel your pain.

Great video, and I share your sentiments. I bought a 2024 model in January, hoping that by the third year they would have ironed out all the kinks, but it seems they haven't. I also don't believe the "engine debris" story and suspect a design flaw in the main bearing. I feel that anything short of an engine replacement is not a proper fix for each truck. I'm also worried about taking it on long trips, which is unfair to us owners who paid a lot of money for this vehicle. The thought of an engine failure stresses me out. I worry about where I will be if it happens, how I will get it to Toyota, how long I will be without it, and what I will drive in the meantime (while still making my monthly payments). That being said, and I know I am just wishfully thinking here, Toyota should have to supply a similar vehicle during repair and cover whatever monthly payment you owe during that time.

Cost of ownership went way up with those twin turbos, to replace the turbos after 100,000 Mi is going to be very expensive not to mention if something else needs to be done to that vehicle, all modern vehicles are going to be super expensive to repair in the future when there are failures, sucks for the consumer but there's no great options out there. Most of the failures are happening at 10k or less. I have a 23 with 26,000 miles. when I first got the truck I changed the oil at 500 miles. From that point I have changed the oil every 3,000 miles with full synthetic and Toyota filter. I think a lot of people are getting scarred. Always pay attention to your oil level and when you change it look for metal sheen in the oil drain pan. I travel all of Louisiana and Mississippi and pull a trailer with a race car on it. I still have faith that this platform. I think your fine.

I love how everyone here has an expert opinion, so here’s mine. Could this be a design flaw? Maybe. Or could it be a machining problem? Possibly. Either way, none of us work in Toyota’s engineering department to make a definitive argument. Until then, let’s wait for the report to finalize and see where it leads. One thing I can say for sure is that, compared to the big three truck manufacturers, Toyota still ranks highest in reliability. For instance, look at all the previous Tundras still running with over half a million miles. But wait, this is a new engine! Yes, it is a new engine, and like any new engine, it takes a few years or more to become bulletproof. This will soon pass.

Sorry, but the new generation of Tundra cannot even be traded in at a Dealership? It’s value has disappeared unless a new engine is installed? Not even a short block can fix this problem? Look at the ones that have had the short block replacement done now showing up at car dealerships. They are considered Branded vehicles? But new truck sales are going on if the Buyer is blind or stupid! The Tundras without any signs of engine failure are being turned away as trade ins all over the U.S. due to the uncertainty of a reliability or future repair! The Lexus models are also being called Pandora’s box waiting to see what falls out? Remember there are two different production lines building these engines in two different countries and they both have the same defects? Toyota screwed the donkey on this. Only way to bring back confidence is new upgraded crate engine installed and full warranty coverage? If not it’s a IED waiting for it’s next victim.

897 engine warranty claims before the recall. Statistics show that a tundra is 4 times more likely than an F150 to have an issue. Pretty scary. We have owned 6 Toyota vehicles… these new generations are not the same Toyota. If your engine fails, you’re going to be dealing with months of frustration, your truck not being the same, damage on the installation, and meanwhile paying on the loan… this is not Toyota that I know anymore… Good luck sir, I wanted to buy one.
