I’ve listened to this wonderful Aria so many times played by different performers throughout my life and invariably enjoyed their particular rendition, whether fast or slow and even in syncopated form. However played it’s because Bach shaped the notes and made them forever sound beautiful, moving and wonderful. However, Lang Lang here choses to make the notes flow like water droplets trickling off an uneven surface during Autumn’s gentle rain. Lang Lang makes the notes appear, at times to hesitate, pool on the surface and then trickle momentarily faster until drained, only to resume their tempo once again until the next pause followed by sudden release. They are unmistakably Bach’s notes, but Lang Lang’s interpretation of how they should sound, here makes them special. I loved it, thanks Lang Lang. In contrast, go and listen to Gould’s interpretation, he creates quite a different picture.

Lang Lang remains a musical miracle. He's got the divine spark! This interpretation perfectly describes the reason for this composition.

Agreeing with the musical period doesn't mean playing in a dry and emotionless way at all. Playing in the "Baroque style" can be as expressive as this overly romantic, completely ouf of context approach... if not more. And no, playing this on a piano is not a valuable excuse for distorting the music in such a way.

@michelepalozzo58244 жыл бұрын
No they wouldn't. Today's modern classical audience could still like this, but it's definitely very far from the imprint that Gould gave to the score, and which remains a milestone to this day. This is too much on the emotional side, voluntarily disregarding the tempo and thus depriving the Variations of their intrinsic formal perfection.

Stunning and masterful, as always. I find it odd how people act like Lang Lang’s interpretation somehow damages the original score, like he is painting over the Mona Lisa. I understand how some may not care for his take on this iconic work, but if you don’t like it, go listen to someone else. Most of the criticism I read here seems to imply that Lang Lang is doing something wrong. He is among the greatest living pianists, if not the greatest. He doesn’t need the approval of KZbin trolls.

Leftbanker Quite true mate! But some folk are never satisfied, and love to moan, you know that! I’m no expert....but this sounds wonderful to me! 💕💕🇬🇧 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸

Leftbanker : Actually, DG does need all the approval it can get. Which is why LL was advertised ad nauseam while the recording was being prepared. DG knows what it has on its hands. Not one single reputable music magazine has reviewed this recording.

It´s easy to picture Bach himself droping a slow falling tear listening to his work being elevated this way . Far above our atmosphere , into the eco of cosmos .
