Lang Lang..... amazing and refreshing interpretation . Why drive past beautiful scenery at 150 MPH ? I’ve listened to this wonderful Aria so many times played by different performers throughout my life and invariably enjoyed their particular rendition, whether fast or slow and even in syncopated form. However played it’s because Bach shaped the notes and made them forever sound beautiful, moving and wonderful. However, Lang Lang here choses to make the notes flow like water droplets trickling off an uneven surface during Autumn’s gentle rain. Lang Lang makes the notes appear, at times to hesitate, pool on the surface and then trickle momentarily faster until drained, only to resume their tempo once again until the next pause followed by sudden release. They are unmistakably Bach’s notes, but Lang Lang’s interpretation of how they should sound, here makes them special. I loved it, thanks Lang Lang. In contrast, go and listen to Gould’s interpretation, he creates quite a different picture.

Lang Lang remains a musical miracle. He's got the divine spark! Some would prefer a dry and emotionless rendition of Bach in the name of agreeing with the musical period but this recording for now is the best revelation of the beauty in Bach to mortal men. This interpretation perfectly describes the reason for this composition.

Exactly, what’s the point of making a mimic version of someone’s famous 1981 recording and no one can say how Bach intended his score to sound if he had a Steinway.

Agreeing with the musical period doesn't mean playing in a dry and emotionless way at all. Playing in the "Baroque style" can be as expressive as this overly romantic, completely ouf of context approach... if not more. And no, playing this on a piano is not a valuable excuse for distorting the music in such a way.

If you listen this piece played by many interpretes then you will have to agree that Lang Lang is leaning on Glen Goulds interpretation with slower pace but same type of emotional touch. Great interpretation but yet I like more Glenn Gould who knows to balance better the quiet calm retained parts with the emotionally more emphasized ones.

Can you suggest other pieces (by Bach or otherwise) that you would consider similar to Bach’s Goldberg Variations Aria da capo? Thank you.

When Glenn Gould spoke of Bach, he reminded us that Bach loved variation, and that the notes on the page could be played in boundless ways. I believe that Gould and Bach would find Lang Lang enchantingly lovely.

No they wouldn't. Today's modern classical audience could still like this, but it's definitely very far from the imprint that Gould gave to the score, and which remains a milestone to this day. This is too much on the emotional side, voluntarily disregarding the tempo and thus depriving the Variations of their intrinsic formal perfection.

Michele Palozzo I remember Gould saying that he even liked the way the Swingle Singers sang Bach, so when you make the claim that he wouldn’t like Lang Lang, I think you are mistaken. I am a huge Gould fan, and love both of his Goldberg recordings, which in my mind are unsurpassed to this day.

Bach can be played in many ways since he rarely wrote down any indications such as Pianissimo or Forte..etc..Therefore I don't understant why all of his works are played like copy/paste....

Stunning and masterful, as always. I find it odd how people act like Lang Lang’s interpretation somehow damages the original score, like he is painting over the Mona Lisa. I understand how some may not care for his take on this iconic work, but if you don’t like it, go listen to someone else. Most of the criticism I read here seems to imply that Lang Lang is doing something wrong. He is among the greatest living pianists, if not the greatest. He doesn’t need the approval of KZbin trolls.
