I find Krashen's distinction between learning and acquisition valid, but I'd question the use of the term "subconscious" for acquisition. I think what Krashen refers to as "acquisition" is actually an inductive reasoning process. Analytical abilities are used in the process of learning a language, whether learners are aware of them or not. How else do you work out the meaning of new words if not by turning to your cognitive abilities, whether deductive or inductive? Where do we draw the line when talking about "subconscious"?

Yes, there is the suggestion that the child does not think, that it comes ‘naturally’ whatever that means. As you say, they must be aware, and consciously thinking, solving a puzzle.

Very informative. Very concise and easy to follow. All ESL and EFL teachers need this basic knowledge, but sadly many don't know the difference or how to employ them to help their students.

Very informative video! As teachers, it's important for us to know the distinctions between the two and how to use/integrate them. Your points are very good and have definitely been noted.

Thanks for summing these 2 up in an easy to understand way. I've learnt about both separately but never directly compared them like this. I'd also approached language acquisition as only a long term passive process. It's interesting to see your interpretation, and I'll definitely take your advice.

You explain things very well. This was a great talk and learners and teachers should really try to listen to what you advise. In Korea it is all about just remembering words and grammar but this talk makes it clear what we should do to study and learn more effectively. Thanks

Thank you. Yes, there is more to language learning than just remembering words and grammar rules. Have a great day.

Thank you for the video. I don't really understand what "comprehensible input is best for language acquisition" means..
@Joshesl3 жыл бұрын
It means if you can understand the message, then you have a better chance of acquiring the language used.

Nice video. Btw I have a question. So, how is the process of language acquisition similar to that the second language learning? Thx

Seems like youtube ESL is post/trans-Krashen CI, while SLA youtube is stuck in often hyper-Krashen CI world

Oh, SLA has moved, but understadning the role of input is crucial. It should not be discounted. We can't learn anything without input, but yes, as my recent research papers show, input is not everything@@6Uncles

Nice video but indecisive. Knowledge has to lead to help decision making. I am a foreign language trainer. Please tell me how this can help me. Kindly give me the step by step language learning process.
@Joshesl5 жыл бұрын
My only advice would be to understand that both have their role to play. There is no step- by-step approach. Think of the goals of your class and lesson and structure a class that builds on previous knowledge and introduces some new language.

One question, where are you from? Your accent sounds really strange and muddled. If I had to guess, I'd say you're a South African trying to take on an American accent.

Yes ~ my accent is "muddled". I am Australian but have lived in several countries and have been surrounded by different North American accents for the past 10 years ~ I guess it impacted the way I speak. Thanks for checking out my vids.
