Hello everyone~ I filmed a few days as a language student here at Seoul National University. I hope you guys enjoy! 💛
Thanks Coréelle for sponsoring this video! 😃 Remember, You can shop Coréelle with the code “CHERIE” for 30% off until the end of January (and get 10% off starting February 1st)

I am not going to lie, Level 4 at SNU has been a lot harder than level 3 and I've been incredibly busy. So I think I will try to film a few days in my life at a time and post vlogs like this in the future. I hope that's okay! 😊
As always, thank you guys so much for all of the love and support. You are amazing! ✨

Anything you post is great, Cherie! And keep your head up - school is hard for a reason, right? If you already knew it all you wouldn't be there, so every difficulty is just one step forward towards the end goal. You've got it!

I liked this style of vlog that highlights bits and pieces over several days! Unless you're going for TOPIK 5-6 I wouldn't worry about the essay (#54) too much. Just focus on learning the formulaic way they want you to answer #53. I used to try to describe things and analyze them in flowery ways, but then I realized they're looking for a textbook, just-state-what-the-graph-shows-in-a-really-boring-way kind of answer. I recommend reading through a few sample answers for those kinds of questions and seeing the general structure before practicing writing any. My favorite way to study vocab or for the listening/reading sections was through past exams - they generally have the same kinds of questions on the same types of topics over and over and over again, so taking a few practice exams and then pouring over each question's vocab was super helpful. Since the same test tests people from levels 3-6, it feels EXTREMELY hard if you're level 3-4, but just go in with the mindset that the last 10-15 questions for Listening/Reading are not designed for your level (nor is #54 of writing). Best of luck, and happy new year!! 😊

It's been almost a year since I left Korea after not renewing my teaching contract. Your videos bring back the joy I felt while there but also remind me how much the air quality kicked my booty 24/7 😂

I studied Japanese before studying Korean so in a way I've already studied hanja and I thought it might be a shortcut for me. But most people will tell you that studying hanja is great but it's more for advanced learners. I tried getting a few books on hanja or basically vocabulary lists grouped by hanja and it is interesting to browse it but I didn't retain much. When I tried copying the vocabulary lists into my flash card app to study, I found the words were a lot harder to remember compared to other lists in order of usefulness or even just seeing a word in a book and copying it into my flash card app. I think once you know all the "useful" words this becomes less of a thing - hence, studying hanja works better for advanced learners because they're ready to start learning a lot of low frequency words. But is is interesting to browse the book I think and maybe you'll find it more effective than I did. BTW I frequented that bookstore in Gangnam pretty often when I lived in a tiny cubby hole of an apartment and went to Korean language school for three weeks. It was fun. I liked that bookstore a lot. I really like the atmosphere of any bookstore. If you haven't tried Anki I think it's worth a shot. My vocabulary is always stronger than other students in my language classes (mostly when I studied Japanese) and I think it's due to this. Flash cards pair well with textbooks and classrooms too which is what you're doing a lot of. I use Anki for premade decks (there's some nice ones) but when I make my own cards I use Flashcards Deluxe. It's a bit simpler but has a lot of features too. You probably also hear that reading is great for vocabulary. Totally true but it's very very slow. Flash cards and speaking and listening will probably get you faster results. The other problem with reading is that Korean doesn't use the roman alphabet. I know hangul is a great alphabet and it's logical etc., but you didn't grow up using it and reading is probably a bit slower as a result. 10 years from now if you're still in Korea I am sure Korean reading speed will catch up a lot. Anyway, if you go the reading route expect it to be slow. I've read about 10 books in Korean now (e-books, using a pop up dictionary) and the progress has been very slow although there is progress. And it took me a year to read my first book. A whole year. I am a bookworm so I don't mind. And I don't live in Korea or have a Korean girlfriend to talk to. Anyway, best of luck! I love your blogs and I am routing for you. Learning a language is for life is a cliché because it's so true. It's so slow.

OH I miss those onigiris from Japan. They're probably called something different in Korea.. The rice triangles wrapped in seaweed. I couldn't read the kanji well and never knew what would be inside 😂. But two of those was a meal to me. I think most people eat more and it was part of the reason I lost a lot of weight in Japan.

I can't wait to go to language school in Korea! It'll be so much fun from what I see on your vlogs. I plan on filming mine too to keep as virtual diary. Btw, is it true that if you become a KZbinr in Korea and win income from it, you have to get a entertainment visa or you'll have problems with the government??

Cherie -- so appreciative of the coupon under your name at Coreelle -- only suggestion is double check the pronunciation of "ampule" or "ampoule" (US vs British spelling) -- probably it's just because of how folks pronounce it in Korea but it's Ahm_PYOOL (I'm not a phonetics expert -- just check google how to pronounce). Hate hearing you mispronounce this repeatedly when your videos and shorts are stellar ;)

Oooh I thought there were 2 pronunciations like shown in this KZbin video. 😅 kzbin.info/www/bejne/joaXpKN6Z6adjMUsi=GZjAyQ5MX6sPVukf maybe one is more correct than the other though and I didn’t realize that. 🥲

Thoughts are reflected? Yikes. Even in English I'm struggling. If you haven't tried Chat GPT you need to check it out. It's great for homework or just asking random questions about anything including Korea/Korean. It's like Papago but better. You can just literally ask it to give you 5 sentences using "생각이 바년되다" and it pumps them right out. 10 sentences if you want. Just pick the easiest one to memorize. I often wonder regarding homework like this if they expect you to ask a Korean person for help or to just look up example sentences in the dictionary or what. It doesn't feel fair to expect someone to use idiomatic words/expressions they've just seen for the first time correctly. Of course, failing at the homework and then getting embarrassed in class is legitimately one effective way to learn (I've done it plenty of times).
