I learned Tagalog Bisaya and Waray via my notebook and asking questions everyday. I had 3 sections in the book, one for each language and listed all the words I heard in the left column of each page. Then I listed all the English words that I wanted to know in those languages. i would cover the right column and work on memorizing every word in that book. When I would go out and meet with Filipinos I would ask every time they said a word I didnt understand and take note of that word and add it to the notebook. Alot of work but was so worth it

Listening to whatever in english you can get at least 2 hours daily and read everything you get your hands on has made marvels on my english and now I feel way more confortable with the english level that I have. Je me suis mis dans un sacré pétrin ce jour où j’ai décidé de débuter le français y’a 2 ans et demi... I’m officially obsessed with language learning to the point it has become one of my life long goals, I’m envisioning to speak at least five languages at a very high level, possibly C1 , so far I’ve already acquired two extra languages with French being the latest, I’m still honing my skills in french as I’m aiming for the C1 level , even though I consider myself pretty fluent in French I still feel like I need to improve or do better. Next up, Russian then Mandarin Chinese so I’ll end up with Spanish , English, French , Russian , Chinese and if I’m still alive by then I might tackle one last language, I got at least 25 more years give or take to accomplish this, wish me luck. Good luck to you too !

I’ve just started learning French and Japanese on my own. I’ve been learning them in school for 2 years so I have a basis but I don’t think schools make the most of the language program,which is why I’m teaching myself. It’s school holidays for me at the moment so I’ve been spending at least 2 hours a day studying. I tend to enjoy vocabulary and grammar equally 😊 your videos have been so helpful and I’ve binged so many of them in the past few days ❤️

Yes these are great tips! I've been working on learning Spanish for over a year now. I hate sitting down at desk to study, so I actually bring my material to the gym and practice while I'm walking on the treadmill or doing the stair master with a low level. Kills two birds with one stone...and it's also associated with something I like doing (moving my body vs being sedentary). I also learn by consuming content I actually enjoy, like watching true crime KZbin videos that are in Spanish. I'm going to take your advice and start setting a goal of 5-10 new words a day. So glad I found your channel!!!!

I always wonder how other polyglots keep their learning process and above all how they practice every single day. At the very beginning of this year's summer I started learning Russian by myself, while practicing Spanish and French with other people (unfortunately, only in a digital way), and I also tried to start studying German as well. Shortly after I realized that I couldn't follow so many languages at the same time, so I decided to focus on two of them (Russian and Spanish), and then only one (Russian, being it the worst I know among the others). In Fall I also realized that if you do not practice, your brain forgets some words, grammar, word construction etc, so I wonder how other people manage to practice many languages (e.g. 4, 6 or even 8) every single day! BTW, I like your channel, I've been watching your interesting contents since the very beginning, they're very satisfying! Keep up!❤️ Un abrazo cálido desde Italia Пока-пока!😘

Good advice! I’m learning multiple languages as a visual learner with a short attention span, and I seem to have the most success using a variety of learning resources to mix things up. I also find learning several languages at once a must to staving off boredom. I’m trying to study 1-2 hours a day, and making sure not to go a whole week without at least some study in each language, but need to be more specific with my plan (that’s how I landed on your video.) I’m trying to work out a way to be more organized and balanced with my languages without being so strict on myself I lose motivation. I find it to be a fine line!

I keep it consistent with one lesson from Spanish, French, Arabic, Swahili and Portuguese every day in Duolingo. Occasionally, I talk to people on HelloTalk, and I regularly consume media in those languages, but I try to keep it in short snippets like 10 minutes tops. This, on top of being in school and working full time, is about as much as I have time for without burning out, but I do find that incorporating household chores or errands in between them or reading breaks through the monotony.

Especially for languages that are very linguistically different from your own, I recommend that you start with two big things, pronunciation and sentence structures. I feel like these two things will help you remain the most motivated and progress the most while speaking a language. But obviously motivation goes so far consistency always beats motivation. I've only learned 3(ish) languages so far (Indonesian, Hungarian, and Mandarin Chinese) but in my experience if you want to improve your pronunciation/accent in a language it is important that you work on it as soon as you start learning the language. This is because you will be practicing (more than likely) pronouncing words and speaking most of the time by yourself. Especially if you self study, you will not get much feedback if you pronounce a word incorrectly. In some languages this may be the difference between pronouncing different consonants/vowels which consequently means different words. If you start by learning how to pronounce words well in the language then you will be reinforcing good pronunciation so when you actively (or if you) decide to improve your accent it will go much more smoothly. If you pronounce words with incorrect/bad pronunciation of the words you will have subconsciously reinforced speaking with bad pronunciation that some native speakers may not be able to understand. By reinforcing bad pronunciation, it will take a much larger span of time (several months to years) to really improve your accent. Lot's of language learners get very self conscious about their accents and pronunciation, leading them to never really speak and they end up developing a huge gap between their reading and speaking/listening level. I would recommend the first month or so of the language improving your accent as much as possible. This will help you become more comfortable when speaking to others and practice more speaking in general. Obviously your accent will get better over time but when I believed my pronunciation was better in a language I tended to speak more in the language and improve much faster. My recommendations for improving an accent include learning IPA (the international phonetic alphabet) which teaches you the mouth positions needed to pronounce something correctly in any language and also I recommend a website called Forvo, a pronunciation dictionary that has native speakers pronounce words for you! You can also request the pronunciation for a word that is not in the dictionary. With that being said, don't feel too insecure about an accent! Most native speakers will understand that it is not your first language and be tolerant of an accent. Most are just excited that you are even learning their language! Perfect pronunciation in a foreign language is extremely difficult but you can get extremely close where your accent is very mild or isn't very noticeable. The next big thing is learning how to construct sentences and thoroughly. I've noticed that many people who begin to learn languages will simply just study large lists of vocabulary without even knowing how to use the word. Example sentences are important for creating active vocabulary but I also recommend studying the various sentence structures of a language that exist when trying to express some idea or concept. The sentence structure for expressing a question, how adjectives are placed in a sentence, how certain particles may be used differently in different situations (的 is a very common particle for Mandarin), etc. There are generally multiple sentence structures in a language and with enough understanding of how ideas are expressed through a foreign language you can begin to understand the general patterns within a language. You will also do a better job when in the intermediate stage/plateau of a language picking up abstract sentence structures, understanding implicit meaning, and also picking up phrases by thoroughly making sure you understand how ideas are expresses and even the little nuances. Also study culture! These can also reflect the way things are said or sentences are constructed as well. By understanding the way of thought of a certain native speaker of your target language you can also better grasp more difficult language and grammatical concepts. This is especially true for languages with very different sentence structure like Korean, where it usually takes a bit of time for people to wrap their heads around the seemingly reversed sentence structure in some cases. This again depends on the language as some languages have complex grammar with lots of exceptions (for example me with Hungarian I truly had to understand the ends and outs of Hungarian grammar and sentence structure to truly understand how to properly convey information). For learning sentence structures a solid introductory grammar book will really be helpful in learning sentence structures. The better you can construct sentences the faster you will be able to speak and understand your target language. Also input is very important as well! Immerse yourself in as much of the language as possible! Various kinds of input (music, media, news, movies, music, etc). You'll be surprised how much you can comprehend after being consistent with input and studying! Remember, consistency and perseverance is more important than any of this information! Language learning takes a long time and it really is a lifelong commitment. Treat languages like a baby, you have to watch it and take care of it everyday!

Thanks so much for this video! Staying consistent with studying vocab is something I struggle with, and your tips are super helpful. As far as my language studying habits go, having a language buddy makes it so much easier and more fun! It takes some effort to find someone, but through apps like Tandem/HelloTalk I was able to find a guy from Colombia who is learning English that I get along with really well, and can practice Spanish with! We have made an agreement to talk every day, one day in English and the next in Spanish. We also try to do one video call in each language every week. When we have some extra time we do things like watch Netflix with Teleparty or do workouts at the same time, which just helps us be more consistent and gives us something to talk about.

Thanks for the vid (as usual :) ). 20 words a day doesn't sound much but it's 200 words a week (if you take the weekend off new words). Then there are all the reps to do. Do you find even this modest-sounding pace can collapse under its own weight at times or do you press on regardless, knowing that you'll learn-forget-relearn quite a few times in your engagement with a word or phrase and then it will eventually stick?
@KarenVanessaBuitrago3 жыл бұрын
Well, part of the routine is also reviewing old words every day. As I showed in the vid I use a space repetition system to do that, so of course I forget some words, but the key is to yes, learn a few new words every day, but the bulk of the work is to review, review and review. Hope it helps

Hey Karen, so you mentioned learning 5 vocabulary words a day for 4 different languages. Would you recommend one learn the same word for all languages, for example, i should learn how to say passion or heart in all four languages rather than 5 different words with no context?
@sumbunny20093 жыл бұрын
Imo try both and see what helps you learn vocabulary more. It would also be important whether you are on the same level in those languages or not

Practice makes perfect..simple...treating language learning as if you were raising a child is a good approach to have, if you do not know where this new language is at ALL times it can die...haha sorta.. but pretty sure!

I'm just starting to read Fluent Forever: How to Learn Any Language an Never Forget It. I don't recall if you've mentioned this book before and if so what opinion you have. Anyway, he writes about Middlebury Language Schools. Isn't that where you are/were to study your languages?

Besides Middlebury, any other languages schools you've heard of around the US? I don't qualify for tuition at Middlebury :(

I think most universities have very good programs. Most big universities have dozens of languages for you to choose from, and I guess most liberal art schools have smaller offerings, but also great programs. I've heard Columbia, Georgetown and Amherst have amazing language departments. Best of luck applying to college!

I speak 3 languages, but I don't see the reason for people to learn a foreign language when all smart people can speak perfect English...🤷♂️ I would gladly trade two of my other languages for some more valuable skills.

As a native French speaker, I can say: don’t get discouraged! Many people give up because it’s too hard, but it’s mainly the pronunciation and writing! You have to practice your pronunciation by listening and and speaking a lot. As for the writing, have one goal at a time. It’s pretty tough (even people who are native struggle), so don’t be harsh on yourself if you make a mistake and definitely don’t try to learn it all at the same time. However, from what I’ve heard and a bit of experience, I can safely say that French grammar is less of a nightmare than German grammar 😬 Little tip for your English as well; advice is ALWAYS singular, just like homework ;)

Spanish is your native language, so why would it be on your word document?
