And Rude was part of the biggest clique in wrestling. Would he have gotten a break without growing up in Minnesota as Curt Hennig's friend? He was a community college grad doing a little bouncing and arm wrestling. Bottom line, it's not a competitive sport. Lots of guys can do well if someone gives them the spot.

Lanny Poffo got many breaks just for being Angelo Poffo’s son. That’s how he got to wrestle in several big name promotions to begin with. The breaks that Lanny got for being Randy’s brother were just the icing on the cake.

I’ve said it before, it breaks my heart that Lanny referred to himself as a jobber. I thought he had amazing skill both in the ring and on the mic. I think he was a better heel than a face, and I think he enjoyed his heel run more because of his snarky genius gimmick.
@cutekanjiiКүн бұрын
It's odd because in another interview I recall him saying the term jobber is offensive and he never uses the term. That we've (referring to wrestlers) all been "jobbers" at one time. Then listed names of big stars including his brother.

Say what you will about Lanny, but he was an outstanding athlete like his bro, and was a “genius” on the mic. Did Lanny ever use what he called the Ricky Stark gimmick ? I only remember the Leaping Lanny gimmick and the Genius gimmick. What was his Ricky Stark character called ? That name seems to only bring up a current wrestler.
@lazur12 күн бұрын
Ricki Starr, best known in the 1950s, played up a gay-ballet bit, to the point of throwing little ballet shoes into the audience,.while wrestling rings around bigger stronger opponents.
@daveconleyportfolio51922 күн бұрын
Starr, not Stark. Sixty, seventy years ago. He wrestled like a ballet dancer, kind of girlish, while embarrassing the heels with his agility.
@HepCatJack2 күн бұрын
@ @lazur1 I looked at a few matches. His ballet technique looks pretty solid to me. Star was a Broadway performer so I doubt that Lanny with his 6 months of ballet training as a kid could have pulled off the ballet moves to this extent. Star did make use of some acrobatic moves which Lanny would have been able to replicate. His behavior was in some way reminiscent to those of Golddust. The crowd were visibly entertained by his antics so while Vince may have rejected the gimmick for Lanny, he may have kept it in the back of his mind for Dustin Rhodes.
@HepCatJack2 күн бұрын
@@daveconleyportfolio5192 Randy bought the rights to the "Gorgeous George" name in the 1990's during his WCW run. Perhaps he intended for Lanny to use it for his Ricky Star gimmick in WCW but the idea was shut down and he ended up having his girlfriend using the name.

Lanny had more talent than most of the top talent!! I've watched a lot of ICW POFFO matches... Went back and watched his early work.. 2nd Generational wrestler! Trained very well.. Had some amazing matches with Rip Rogers.. Hair vs. Hair match was 📺 gold!! I'm glad Lanny got his time in the spotlight! He would read a clever poem about his opponent during a promo, then come to the ring with another clever promo about the crowd... the town or city he was in... Crafty with words and could get a broomstick over 💯%!

Say what you like about Poffo, but his Genius gimmick was quite unique. Or if it had been done before, it wasn't memorable unlike him as the Genius. They haven't really done it since. The only one I can think of that is similar, is Shane Douglas with the Dean Gimmick. I dont think I ever seen an interview where Poffo is asked about Douglas and what he felt about that. If it was a rip off or not and what his thoughts are on why it didn't get over. Or vice versa Douglas's being asked about The Genius.
