I met and interviewed Andy Narell in 1984 while producing shows for Radio Bilingue, he had come into Fresno to perform and we gave him airtime. I think I still have the interview on cassette tapes. Amazed that he has been doing his creative genius on the steel drums🎉 Wow just great to hear this. I now help run that Latino owned radio Network. 😊

Andy Narell is in a whole category of his own along with his band mates. The music of Trinidad and Tobago fused with the sweet notes of cool jazz and delivered with unequaled steel drum dexterity.. This makes any level of stress vanish at quantum velocity!!

David . . . I could not agree with you more. I discovered Narrell many, many years ago with his Album HIDDEN TREASURES and have attempting to alert everybody i come across with his genius. He's ALWAYS BEEN a category unto himself . . . and it takes for one to completely open themselves to appreciate him . . . Listen every morning to COFFEE STREET with the UNT musicians . . . Cannot start my day without them . . . lol

Ive been obsessed with his material for years. This video is amazing. He’s on a different level. Most pan players play the usual boring tunes but Andy’s tunes and approach is very sophisticated and classy and fun. I wish I could play like him.

What a great show! Andy is a legend and played with just about everyone. Love the split screen footage so I can see what the drummer is doing. Solid player.

LOVE HIS ATTITUDE TO THIS GREAT INSTRUMENT, AND HIS BAND , ESPECIALLY HIS KEYBOARD PLAYER, HER SKATTING IS TOP CLASS THEN THE BASS, AND DRUMS, ALL CLASS PLAYERS. So many musicians these days ( showing my age) just do not know about light and shade. I hope I get to meet you one day and hear you play, and maybe talk to you about your craft. Thanks . My sister introduced me to you, but until I heard relator University of Calypso, I started digging . nice find.

You need to be sat there with a loooong Pina Colada!! I would like to hear Andy work with a drummer using brushes instead of sticks a la Modern Jazz Quartet to soften the attack during the low tempo tracks. I think it would work. By the way, I AM NOT criticising the drumming. As for Janysett I think she will soon rank alongside Ruben Gonzales, Chucho Valdes, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Roberto Fonseca in the pantheon of Cuban pianissimo greats. By the way, whoever filmed this did it in the most appropriate and sympathetic manner possible. Kudos!!
@universalman58612 жыл бұрын
In addition to a drummer with brushes, a conguero and even a bata drummer was necessary on the montuno breaks
