I agree with you. The only thing that Yates could’ve done differently was to, not close the gap to Almeida and sit on Pogacar. Force Pogacar to close or not close. I can't remember where I read this or of it is even real but I feel like I saw somewhere that Pog said that Yates attack was one of the hardest he has had to cover. If that really was true because it definitely did not look easy according to Pog's face, if Yates had a bit more in the tank maybe we could've seen him potentially take the stage if he could've held a gap after the attack. Maybe he thought Pog snapped to him and followed him so he eased up as to not gas himself thinking that an extra few seconds would have been useless.

Pog's pain face was on, and he was in the wheel. Odds are if draft wasn't such a factor here separation could occur, but I don't think he would gain enough time to take the Jersey. I never really understood the whole Sky train thing being any benefit. They always had the strongest rider in Froome so they just paced him up the climb and destroy the opposition. What I am trying to say is that if you have the strongest rider then pacing by a team is immaterial in my opinion. Movistar and Jumbo Visma have demonstrated that in recent years because Pogacar has just sat on the back of their train and then just left them for dead whenever he felt like it. Strada Bianche demonstrated that as well. This is what makes me smile when pundits advise teams cooperating to attack a certain rider. Yeah, like that's going to happen.
@MDP17022 жыл бұрын
I don't know if Froome was always the best climber honestly. More like he might have had the best endurance, which is kind of different. Putting Froome and for example contador 1v1 on a climb, I wouldn't know who will win, I'd personally give the edge to Contador 6-7 times out of 10. Also Froome always had a good ITT, which means other contenders had to attack him, his train just either made this impossible due to the hard pace or brought back attackers after they already used a lot of their energy, which ofcourse only helped Froome later on the climb to blow them away when they were more exhausted due to that failed attempt. Pogacar's wins of the tour are somewhat different. Pogacar made the difference on Roglic in 2020 in an individual ITT stage, where the TJV train couldn't help Roglic. Moreover it was the perfect storm against Roglic for Pogacar: a special ITT with a long steep climb, Roglic having a bad day and Pog having a good day. Was it an ITT like usually ie. more flat, Pogacar wouldn't have won the 2020 TdF. And if for example Roglic had that weaker day on a regular mountain stage, his teams train might have been able to keep the pressure on Pogacar enough to not allow him to take enough time. In 2021 arguably Pogacars team wasn't much weaker than any other team, only Ineos might have been a bit stronger, but not by much. And again Pog had the better ITT. A strong 'sky' train arguably helps the best ITT GC riders team the most, especially if there are better overall climbers. Another way a 'sky' team train is usefull, is if you have multiple irons in the race, which Sky several times had. This way you first eliminate all other domestiques with your strong train and then you just cycle attack with your two good riders, something TJV likely will try to do this year at the TdF if things don't go wrong. If I look at the current peloton, I'd say Evenepoel would be best suited with something like a sky train. He has a very strong ITT, he isn't the best climber on steep sections and lacks the punch. He is the kind of rider that needs to ride like froome: steady hard pace with good cadence. This is why I think after 2026 he either needs to be certain that QST has a proper GC train (unlikely) or he needs to try and get into a team like TJV, UAE or Ineos. Another rider that could use a sky train is Van Aert in one week races imo. I am not going to say he'd have won Tirreno last year, but it would have been much closer, considering he had to pace nearly the entire climb back then himself. He could with a proper train clean up quite a lot one week races imo.

LR has a members only video called "Chris Froome running a train through Contador and Nibali" explaining why the train is so effective. Join channel membership for a dollar and have a look at it. In short, if your GC man (like Froome for example) can win time in TT and has a strong kick, then having a train is super effective. Basically, imagine Froome has a 6,2W/kg FTP, and your main competition each have a 6.5W/kg FTP. Then on a climb, even if your domestiques can't do 6.5W/kg for 20 minutes or the whole climb, they only have to do it for a shorter time, like say 5 minutes, and then pull off and let the next guy drive on the front at 6.5W/kg, over and over. Then the competition will have to go over their threshold to attack, while Froome stays in the draft and probably below threshold, and once the attacker slows after going over threshold to recover, the 6.5W/kg train will drag them back, and then in the last bit of the climb Froome will be fresher than guys that have been watt spiking to attack on the climb, and Froome will be able to attack and gap them and win time, despite not having the highest W/kg for the climb or being the strongest climber. This is why you see Pog and Rog attack in the last km of mountain top finishes. They have incredible 2 minute power, and basically just sit on their train, or whoever's train is pulling, and then kick out of the bunch in the last 2 minutes and gap everyone to win time.

The king is dead! Long live the king! You are watching the new Merckx. Even Merckx says so... Pogo beat down the entire field at Strada. A move that recalls the halcyon days of Merckx and Hinault. Dominating the a race so completely that is seems impossible. I miss the days that top racers whined that is was "impossible" to win both classics and grand tours. Impossible for them but not for the greatest. Remember this kid is 23 and will get STRONGER for the next 5 or so years. You are not watching him at his highest potential.

I hope he becomes better, might also be blossoming very early, being already near his physical peak, it happens (though more experience is never bad). However I feel his strade win gets overstated. Yes, he did a 50km solo, but he also finished slower than the winners of last year and in 2019, possibly indicating the peloton was just slow this time. Moreover Bernal finished 3rd last year only after VDP and Alaphilippe, did people back then say he'd win classic monuments etc? Strade seems like the kind of race where all kinds of riders can do good: flemish and ardenne classic riders, GC riders, ... Don't get me wrong, he's the best cyclist in the world at the moment, possibly the best cyclist in decades, but people are just now acting like he did an amazing performance just because he did a 50km solo, while ignoring the remaining context, ie. the peloton was dysfunctional for the most part after his attack, none of the riders that finished before him last year were present (in the finale), ...

@@MDP1702 No one has won monuments and grand tours in the same year since Hinault. Pogo has won 2 TdF back to back, LBL (easily the hardest one day race in terms of fitness), UAE 2x, TA and Lombardia. His palmares in terms of total talent already are better than anyone since Hinault. He won Stada AFTER winning UAE, how many have done that? No one. MVP, Wout and Ali are all one day racers that will never win a GT much less a TdF so they should not be mentioned in the same breath as Pogo. Bernal is good but not as good as Pogo... 1 TdF and 1 Giro. TA and Paris-Nice. No monument. Pogo already as 2 monuments and 2 TdF plus TA and UAE. And Pogo is 2 years younger than him. Whatever. This KID is the greatest of his day and is one of the three greatest cyclists to ever mount a bike. All that remains to be seen is if he can the ultimate GOAT.

@@Sills71 *No one has won monuments and grand tours in the same year since Hinault.* Except Roglic (2020), Di Luca (2007), Rominger (1992), Jalabert (1995), Fignon (1989), Bugno (1990), Berzin (1994) and Cunego (2004). And there are many more GT winners that won monuments in the year after or before too. And this while in the past +-20-30 years generally GT riders weren't really expected to go for monuments except maybe something like Lombardy or LBL, most just focused on riding stage races. *Pogo has won 2 TdF back to back, LBL (easily the hardest one day race in terms of fitness), UAE 2x, TA and Lombardia.* I did say he might be the best cyclist in decades so far, haven't I? *He won Stada AFTER winning UAE* And? Are you saying UAE made him weaker? Ofcourse not, it gave him course rhythm. *how many have done that?* How many have tried that would be a better question. UAE exists for only four years. Bernal could maybe pull it of if he tried (and without his fall), he finished 3rd at strade last year afterall and I doubt he'd do bad at UAE. Anyway, I don't see why this a good metric. Most people that ride UAE for GC don't care for strade (especially not since PN starts the day after and TA 2 days later, at least this year), and most riders that focus on strade don't care about UAE GC. *MVP, Wout and Ali are all one day racers that will never win a GT much less a TdF so they should not be mentioned in the same breath as Pogo.* Most likely not. Then again it isn't a focus for them. Who knows what Van Aert could do if he dedicates 1-3 seasons to try it, including lower weight etc. He has the timetrial, he can climb decently, so who knows. It is unlikely he'd ever try it though, with his team already having elite GT riders and the effort in change required. Maybe if he'd won all monuments (except Lombardy) and the road WC, then he might try it as a 'why not?' idea. Roglic won Vuelta 3x, Romandia 2x, TA, UAE, Basque 2x, LBL, OG ITT. And he is also only riding WT level for 5 years. And only 3 years since he started winning (stage) races. Who knows what his palmares would have been had he started in cycling instead of ski-jumping, he might be considered similarly to how Pogacar is now.
