Really Im just glad Wout had the brains to just give up the stage rather than to risk his life. When you are on a sprint, things happen so fast and decisions have to be made in miliseconds. Kudos to Wout for his good reaction.

It would be good if the UCI applied a rule to themselves: *The barriers must be perfectly straight in the last 100 metres.* And with parrallel red lines superimposed onto the overhead shot, any deviation by the winner of 2+ metres is instant disqualification. Very easy to implement all of this.

Things like this shouldn't have to be as bad as Jakobson's coma and awful injuries to lead to a disqualification. Van Aert saved himself a lot of injuries by stopping his sprint, and Phillipsen absolutely should have been DQ'ed whether or not this was intentional. Even if it was a tactic not meant to cause Van Aert harm, it's too dangerous to let continue.

It is certainly a debatable sprint. But for me, only 1 side is at fault. And that's not Jasper or Wout, but the ASO. They should take an example from Flanders Classics in terms of safety. Every year there is still a wrong finish in the Tour. At the finish they could improve a lot. Like they use Boplan barriers in Flemish races, for example, which are much stronger, safer and separate the public from the riders much better. Time to make some quick changes there if you ask me! This certainly sets Flanders Classics apart from the ASO in terms of organisation.

2.3.036 "Riders shall be strictly forbidden to deviate from the LANE they selected when launching into the sprint and, in so doing, endangering others.” Jasper launches. Chooses his LANE which is a breadth of road in front of him NOT a narrow line. he then moves incidentally within that lane. if wout was endangered it was by the barrier and he has a responsibility to position himself better within his own lane. insane that people expect these guys to maintain a 10cm line while putting out 1800 watts in the most competitive hectic sprints of the season. it's not the rule. jasper did not make an illegal sweeping move or chop wout. you're mistaken. legal sprint case closed.

Tough one to call, I like jasper philipsen, but I can see why he was in question. My problem with this is that the kink in the barriers was apparently obscured by the tree, well, from what I can make of it Van Aert was already through that bit before he started slowing down. There's no denying philipsen did come in close to the barrier. Possibly cutting off van Aert, but it looks to me like Van Aert van had already given up when philipsen started moving over. I'd also question whether it was intentional, or whether philipsen was simply trying to keep control and balance whilst sprinting through that turn.

After what has happened with Jakobsen in Poland 2 years ago, things like this should be clear enough. If van Aert had continued his sprint instead of backing out this could have ended in the same way as Jakobsen or worse. Things like this should be punished harder, ban them from the rest of the tour or this kind of behavior will continue throughout the peloton and big crashes with serious consequences will keep happening.

The main problem here is that turn at the end. They shouldn't set up the finish immediately following a turn in the road. Phillipson had the lead, and you can't really blame the lead rider for taking the shorter line through a turn. You can't have a turn in a course and then relegate the lead rider for taking the apex line. ETA - I do see that he also went further right after the turn finished. By that point WVA had already let off and dropped back and then JP had clear space to do that without impacting anyone. If WVA was still on his right, he would have crashed and that'd be a big deal.
@sebastianszalek6345
@sebastianszalek6345 Жыл бұрын
If they had gone straight until the finish line, he would have been most likely disqualified. This little bend before the finish line saved him the stage as Van Aert wouldn't have had much space anyway, so we can't be totally sure whether he would have had enough room to sprint for the win.
@MegaToddski

Officials got it right, there was still a gap but with JP pulling on the bars so hard they would have locked elbows and both come down hence WVA backing off. The exertion JP was putting out he nearly put himself into the barriers 5m before the line. Another bike race over hundred's of km's again with chicanes and roundabouts in the final. The wonky barriers need to be sorted too.

How much of a bend in the road is necessary to change this argument from "lane deviation" to "if you don't take the apex then you are a chump and will lose"? My point is the applicability of the line deviation rule fails proportionally with the un-straightness of the finish.

I don't care about WVA or any other sprinters winning, but your comment is golden BS... Taking the fastest line --> cutting to the right for half of the road entire width... How could you say this is not a deviation? The beginning of JP sprint wasn't covering his right or left (he was in the middle of the road), which seems a big mistake knowing the road was turning right to the finish line. He was poorly placed, and decided that cutting straight to the right was the best way to correct his error (and MVdP's lead out error). He almost crashed himself in the barrier making sure nobody will pass him on the right... The last time we saw such deviation/push on the barriers, Jakobsen ended up in the hospital and almost died...

@@konvictcsgo1871 They are sprinting through a bend and not on a straight road. The rider who is ahead may take the fastest line through that bend. WVA is trailing Philipsen when they reach the corner of that bend and that is why he has to break and stop sprinting. Only afterwards Philipsen is truly deviating to the barrier but at that point he isn't endangering anyone. If WVA keeps sprinting he is at fault.

@@great_live_music You don't understand how sprints work. JP doesn't have to sprint through the bend in the middle of the road. He is allowed to take the fastest line to the finish which in this case means that he may sprint diagonally towards the corner as long as he is in front of WVA.

Yes, he was moving into WvA's line. In Wout's view it looked like the opening was being closed by JP. It caused him to back off his sprint. If you follow the barriers (not the road), JP keeps getting closer to them, and his final nudge causes Wout to bail. Should have been relegated. It happens, and I love JP, but these are the moves that need to be stopped.

Definitely should have been relegated. He knew Wout was there and aimed for the apex. I think that since Wout was there he has to leave a little room on his right, passing the apex. It's worse after the apex though. He pretty clearly cut into the barriers and almost crashed himself into them, trying to keep Wout out of the inside.

@@adamjd7645 Yeah he does. I think it's a grey area though, as I don't think you should be able to aim tight to the apex with someone half a wheel on your inside, and be aware of it. It looked like he was aware of Wout before he took that line, but of course he could say he wasn't, and also, the rules are a little ill-defined and let him do that even if he was aware. That's all I meant. That's almost moot though, as I think it was even worse after the apex.

Phillipsen deserved to win. He was faster. Wout made a big gamble with his line. He must seen that curve and the bend on right side of the road. So Wout thought that he could outsprint Jasper and be first in the bend. If so, Jasper needed to go left and take the longer line. In that case Wout could maybe win but he lost the sprint to that bend and backed off. He knew that he had lost. Wout did not even protest so much because he know that his gambe did not pay off. Why did Wout try this? Well, he knows that in straight line sprint he cannot win Jasper and the other real sprinters. Wout is not pure sprinter, so he had to try something else. It did not pay off, Jasper read his game and took the win.

I know it doesn’t matter for Wout because he didn’t win either way, but if the UCI want me to get real about protecting riders then this would be a relegation. He did exactly what Groenewegen did to Jakobsen, Dylan got a year for that because Jakobsen kept sprinting. Sprinters are incentivised to do it because of results like this. The choice is deviate or lose. So the deviate and roll the dice with the UCI officials. On form it’s not a relegation. But that’s because the UCI isn’t consistent in application of the rules. I’m not against Phillipsen here either, he’s only doing what he is being incentivised to do.

As always the jury is very inconsistent. The day before Skjelmose and Bettiol were relegated, with that logic the same should have happened to Philipsen as what he did for sure was at least equal to Skjelmose and Bettiol. But they real culprits here are ASO for putting an S turn in the last 300 m. of a stage that for sure will end in a bunch sprint and for the UCI to allow such a thing to happen. All those talks about riders safety are a big farce when you allow things like this.
