Thanks LR, I sort of understand what WVA was doing - all along he has been clear he is going for the green jersey. It was opportunistic race today and if Quinn Symonds had been a fitter they could have taken to the end and probably WVA would have gifted Symonds with the win and kept yellow for another day which would have been a bonus. However the main impact of his tactics was that JV did not have to pace all day and rested out of the wind while the other teams had to chase and spend a lot of energy - we see that it was one of the fastest races on record a huge energy drain for the lead out guys towing along Wout's JV teammates in the bunch. The other GC teams would have hoped to coast along much of today to conserve energy for tomorrow. Then after he was caught by slipping right back through the peloton and coming in minutes behind. Now he is definitely no longer a GC threat and will be allowed to join other breakaways and so mop up whatever intermediate sprint points are on offer on that stage and then drop back to the main group and ride with them as a domestique until the end plus if it is sprint finish contest that as well. It was smart tactics in my book. Roglic will take a week to recover use of his shoulder fully.

If he had allowed Skujns, Cosnefroy and the Intermarche rider in they would have had to contribute 1 rider max and not have to push it too hard and then WVA could have easily top 5 stage which would have led to more points. Jumbo used a lot of energy too today, same amount as Ineos I would say. I would have thought he could have domestiqued tomorrow and then intentionally lose minutes.
@beckobert2 жыл бұрын
No one can force JV to pace. If they would have let a break without GC guys go, what is really the worst that could have happened? Wout loses his yellow jersey and there are no bonus seconds at the finish line. That would have been a better result than what they got with even less energy spent.

@ryanphelan68612 жыл бұрын
spot on especially cobbled stage teams aren't just for draft and trains they carve out a safe space for you that takes so much energy and as you said in wind. Not surprised Magnus in Denmark and Wout and Tadej imo two strongest riders in race if wout were on UAE those two could attack and do things weve never seen in circumstances. Like sagan and froome but from 60k's and minutes not seconds. Wout has incredible physiology lot like tony martin with narrow shoulders that make him naturally aero and his legs have grown to Boonen like size given hes in prime 28 hes got 4-6 years of bully like riding power and ability like Fabian used to I think hes the endurance to do multiple triples E3, Flanders, Roubaix thought hed do it this year. That TT ability is just like a knockout punch type cycling quality so few have after such efforts. Hes incredible both are. Tadej by 26-28 will be strong on pave not just threatening or learning he gets better in longer races like monuments think he wins each once not sure at proper age who will be left to stay at his relentless pace and imagine rouleurs with him like kung, bettiol, wellens, campanaerts, cattaneo, Moho is buddy of his so is mathews , hes doing it all alone strade and flanders wout didn;t even do that. Two best I see on road. Lot of racing left on some insane alpine and pyrenee stages that should shatter field. Still not convinced Wout can't race GC Tirreno was impressive je just has to be patient pick right parcours and Vuelta Sierra is high but reason Giro Tour double so dubious. Insane climbs looks at Mathieu he just has no snap sice he raced Giro so hard. Shame hes on VG team Im like bad voodoo for these guys rest are in top ten but 1. Ill check after tour watched it with same priorities for decades. Panache!!! Cheers enjoy and astute observation. Agree 100% Degendt has record for most Ks at front in break but he wasn't eating wind like wout/Tadej. Tony Martin training for world ITT in vuelta one year took off at start 160-180 k's and mainatained until sprint finsish he lost brutal :) He immediately asked who pushed peloton Fabian ? lol because that was when he Bradley and Fabian would trade off depending on course style.

With Pogacar looking so good and already having the advantage he does, teams are going to have to attack early in the high mountains. My worry with that though is the other teams that already seem to via-ing for the podium places (e.g. Bora). Let's say INEOS send Martinez up the road or Jumbo Roglic, since he's already lost chunk of time, on an early attack, even if UAE riders are being dropped like they were today, I just have a feeling teams like Bora and Movistar are just going to chase it back for Pogacar so they can get their guy on the podium so they will still come in together to the final climb where Pogacar will torch everyone but their guy can maybe finish best of the rest
@MDP17022 жыл бұрын
If Kuss and Kruijswijk are in good shape, I can see them drop most if not all domestiques, the question is whether other GC leaders will bluf enough and put the pressure to respond to attacks on Pogacar, or will they just immediately chase themselves just thinking of 2nd and 3rd place.

It might have to do with the fact that, when one of your own (especially the Yellow Jersey) is riding ahead of the peloton, your own team doesn't have to chase. I am an Ineos guy and always will be. But I love the way Tadej Pogacar races. I hope that Jumbo use both Roglic and Vinegaard and that Ineos use all 4 riders in Thomas, Yates, Martinez snd Pidcock as launching pads for each other, since UAE is not that strong. I feel that is the only way to weaken Tadej is to attack with one counter and so on for 3-5 km straight. Ineos having 4 guys all together in time makes that alot easier to do I think. 🤷♂️

I like inoes too But Ineos should focus only on Stage wins I don't think Thomas has what it takes to beat pogacar , Yates is bad at TT , their only hope is Martinez for GC, but he will be a domestique to Thomas i think.

So many comments with QQ about Jumbo's failing tactics, guess having only one rider expend any real effort during the entire longest stage in the tour while having the yellow in the team is a bad thing... Yeah, really.
@clementdenis42122 жыл бұрын
Well if that was the point send an expendable like Laporte rather than a key almost-leader who also has a chance to win the stage if he stays in the peloton.
@MarvinWestmaas2 жыл бұрын
@@clementdenis4212 No. Because a> controlling the race so WvA can win from the bunch takes the entire team b> Laporte is a breakaway the size WvA had hoped for doesn't have the same chances for success. My take: WvA tomorrow get's a day off in the final climbs. He'll not even try to stay in the front of the race, he'll conserve as much as possible because he has nothing to gain tomorrow. So in the end, even energy wise it's not that bad a deal, WvA sure can help in the mountain stage part but Kruiswijk and Laporte can do that as well they shown this year already especially Kruiswijk. They won't use WvA tomorrow.
@clementdenis42122 жыл бұрын
@Marvin Westmaas a) just chill while the other teams are chasing your breakaway guy and crank it up if needed in the last 10km. b) WvA had no chances to win in a 3 man breakaway with GC hopeful Vlasov and is delusional if he thinks he did. The peloton would never have let this breakaway go to the end, you just can't give a guy like Vlasov one minute for free. And you can not give too much time to WvA either : he is not really a GC threat but with a 3 minute buffer he would be c) Consequentially Laporte or even better Benoot would have had a much better chance to win from the breakaway because they would've had a much better chance to get to the end with the breakaway. Oh and d) if the goal is to avoid having to work just screen the breakaway until there are no dangerous guy in it and let them take 20 minutes. Now the other teams will work if they want the stage.

@@PeterKrauss1963 It seems so (the snapping part at least) if not the jamming problem. :( Majka's Campy Record chain snapped a couple of days ago while on a climb helping out his team leader (Po)'Gotcha'. He is the antithesis of a big, heavy, sprinter type. ;) The resultant muscle tear from that chain snapping took him out of the Tour, and did hurt his leader's chances.

Again, questionable tactics by Jumbo Visma. I mean, Van Aert probably enjoyed himself today, but he also missed a big opportunity for another stage win, had he not gone in the breakaway all day.
@goozerboozer85432 жыл бұрын
JumboVisma didn't need to control anything, because Van Aert was in front. Also, Wout took some more points for his green jersey. In addition, they 'pushed' Pogacar into the yellow, which means after every stage Pogacar needs to wait on the yellow and white jersey while Vingegaard and Roglic will have their massage, get some food and some additional rest. Zoetemelk once said 'you win the Tour in bed'.
