The hammer and sickle was first used as a symbol to represent the unity between the agricultural workers, and the iron workers during the October Revolution of 1917 that brought Tsarist Russia to its knees. Today it is a symbol widely used to represent the proletariat in its whole, all the working peoples of the world in unity.

The hammer and sickle is a universal workers symbol. Though the flag of the CCCP (Soviet Russia) did contain this symbol on a red background. Though this is not a Russian flag.
