2:1 is actually not a weird aspect ratio - it's the "Netflix scope" and very popular in TV today.

Honestly, I really like how they have a more subtle anamorphic look and the small size is a big plus! As Jordan said, they remind me of vintage lenses, which I already use. 2:1 is, in my opinion, a very underrated aspect ratio.

Being primarily a still shooter, I'm never going to buy an anamorphic lens (especially when mediocre-performing "budget" models cost a grand apiece, as these do) so thank you for going back to including a bit of byplay and sniping to provide entertainment value for the casual viewer.

Good review. These lenses are definitely an interesting option for those with crop sensor cameras. If you're wanting to experiment with anamorphics, these lenses are an option, but remember there are also adapters you can buy as long as you're mindful of the weight limits of your body. There are even adapters for phones which achieve a small squeeze factor if you wish to practice with a shoestring budget. I would recommend checking out Anamorphic on a Budget as a resource to learn more before sinking any money into anamorphics, because you'll find that it's easy to get G.A.S. with cinema stuff.

I'd love to see these compared to the Sirui ones, especially in the sharpness department. Since using the Sirui lenses, I was shocked on how sharp they were for a budget anamorphic lens, and these laowa ones, to my eyes, seem considerably less sharp. Everything about these look great though, from consistent barrel design for swapping between lenses and follow focus systems, to the same lanes diameters. And these also look to have a consistent squeeze factor and well controlled breathing, unlike the sirui. Looking forward to seeing more about these in the future.

Wow! You nailed everything that I was thinking while watching this. I have the Sirui 35mm and it’s super sharp. These other lenses seem flat to me. I thought it was just me. Yes, I would love to see a comparison. Thank you for this comment. I 100% agree!

The standard is to record to a *4:3 film plane* or *digital sensor capture area* with a *2x squeeze* anamorphic lens to get a final output *2.4:1 aspect ratio* . The option to record onto a 4:3 image capture area is only available on dedicated cinema cameras such as the Sony Cine Alta, Red Camera, and Arri. Prosumer mirrorless cameras are not dedicated cinema cameras and require the end user to finagle with non 2x anamorphic lenses shooting on non 4:3 capture regions to get some semblance of an anamorphic widescreen image. All other lenses that deviate from the standard lead to further confusion on how to record, get the anamorphic look, and get a final 2.4:1 standard anamorphic aspect ratio. -This confusion leads to people shooting with 1.33x lenses on 16:9 sensors and getting the 2.4:1 aspect ratio but not getting the anamorphic look due to the lack of squeeze. -This confusion also leads to people buying 1.5x anamorphic lenses, which do not have the same look of a 2x anamorphic shot on a 4:3 image capture area. You can still get a 2.4:1 final de-squeezed output from a 1.5x lens (without having to crop) but it doesn't look as good as following the standard.

@MoonProds2 жыл бұрын
The GH6 can shoot open gate, or 4:3 so you need to crop the top and bottom to fill out a 16:9 screen, but since this lens gives a wider shot on the sides, you don't need to crop the top and bottom, resulting in a much wider image ;)

@MoonProds2 жыл бұрын
@@bryanbarajasBB Hey, that's very interesting setup you have here! I had actually looked into it before but I don't really understand what you mean. You can shoot with a variety of horizontal squeezes to adapt to the anamorphic lens so it displays in the right proportions (like 1.5x for this one for example), is that what you're asking?
@Breonnick2 жыл бұрын
These lenses peak my intrest. How ever with the lens flares it's kind of a turn off how muted they are compared to the Suri anamorphics for me but in return it's amazing how they designed them so the squeeze factor never changes at diffrent focus distance unlike the suri.

I don't get statements like "gh6 has desqueze in camera so I don't need a monitor". What's the big deal with filming while watching a squeezed image on the back LCD of the camera? You can still see the framing. It works. You'll desqueeze in post. Why so precious?

@NoSuRReNDeR0012 жыл бұрын
Ugh.... sorry to interject but the point of ANA glass is you get double or 1.5x the width of lens WHILE keeping its hyperfocal and background compression - So a 25mm will do what a wide angle does but a 50 ana will get you the same FOV but not squish the persons head ... its like having two 50mm lenses next to each other.... that is the point=NO that is the BRILLIANCE of anamorphic... not these side effects and flaws you have mentioned. -sorry I love you guys but Cinema is my wheelhouse.
