This is the lens which was used in the BBC Series 'Green Planet' by the evergreen David Attenborough. iirc, they created custom rigs and used the lens to provide amazing 'walk throughs' of plants growing. I remember thinking 'way to go Laowa' because they are turning out to be an innovative camera lens company. I have no affiliation with Laowa but I have owned several of their lenses and were I a videographer I'd probably have this on my list to buy.

@@enigmabletchley6936 Yes the original Laowa 24mm scope was used extensively on the series not the probe, however the BBC engineering folk created a DIY prism for the Laowa scope . I never saw or used this prism adaptation on the series, so was intrigued to see that Laowa have now bought this out. Having said this, I would' have much preferred a 45' prism, as I find this way more useful than the 90' for conventional camera moves, so hope this also comes out at some point...

Grabbed this lens last year December. I think the biggest thing that drives me crazy is that it is so damn sensitive to movement creating micro jitters :( No matter what type of auto slider you have it will always throw out some jitter. The lens runs hot in image color as well and requires a lot of lighting to make things look really good but like with any lens , the more u use it the more you ll figure out how it will look the best

Surely to fix your issue with the frame not being perpendicular to the axis of the probe, you just need to rotate the periscope a little? The right angle of the periscope attachment messes with your mind, so this isn't intuitive!
@niccollsvideo2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't off axis on rotation but actually off axis in line with the shaft. No amount of rotation will.fix that.

The mirror in the periscope should be replaced with a prism, more specifically the type used in right angle viewfinders with un-reversed image. It would make the lens even more prohibitively expensive to mere mortals, but it would make the lens more user friendly ... and probably improve image quality.

You mention the term flat field compression in your discussion of macro lenses that may have a slightly longer focal length. I have to take you to task on the use of this term and say that there is no such thing as flat field compression. It is somethng that I often hear but it has no basis in fact. You cannot compress an image by changing the focal length of your lens. If you select say a 28mm, 50mm, 75mm and 250mm lens and set them up progressivly on the same tripod at the same location and centre them all on exactly the same part of the view in front of you. The image that you take with the 250mm lens and that part of the image that is included in each of the progressively wider images will be identical. Certainly resolution will be affected but the composition will be the same. Lens manufacturers go to incredible lengths to ensure that no compression or other artifact occurs. Lenses cannot change the path light takes from the subject to the camera which is what you are suggesting by the use of this erroneous term. What you are talking about is the change in composition that occurs because you are changing the location from where you are taking the picture. There is no "flat field compression" just a change in composition due to the fact that you have changed camera locations. Hopefully I hope I won't hear you sinning again. I'm about to get a loan of one of these lenses. It will be interesting to see how i go.

At $2299 not all that bad for what you can do even for stills! The only complaint is it is not "Chipped" or no contacts. Back when Rokinon came out with the 14mm f/2.8 the distortion was terrible and Lr was first with a LP but not for a year and not even Rokinon's LP worked, used C1. But not even adding lens info with Lenstagger will a post program identify. Now for stills you can use the little known lens profile/dust removal in Phase One Capture One using a white plastic square plate that lets you adjust things. I use for my old Canon FD lenses to do some distortion correction but very rare. The one thing to add is that effective Macro lenses are the old film lenses at greater than 135mm and you are so far away and have to use focus stacking to get more in focus and/or use tubes that use less of the sensor to get a sorta closer appearing subject and sometimes putting a lens on backwards, yes backwards. Made for full frame even a tube or two could get a closer view. Thanks to all the new enlargement software. Exp. some of the best macro lenses are found on the old darkroom poles talkabout big!
