What is impressive too, the way you pronounce "Angénieux"... so funny. You are good at focusing and filming, no doubt. I find it a little odd you didn't compare this to the DZO pictors at all because that's easily the most direct competitor to the rangers. Not an actually real life comparison, but just from the hypothetical of if you're shopping for budget cine zooms right now the DZO has by fast the most popular set. If the 17-50mm is in the same price point as the DZO 20-55 it's a much better choice. I'm never wide enough at 20mm on S35; but I rarely need to be at 55mm. That trade off is so worth.
@CineDailies6 ай бұрын
I honestly forgot about them ha. I would rather do a real life comparison with them. So I'll do a follow up.
@getfmlr6 ай бұрын
From what Laowa have said so far, these will be $1,999 USD each. And without direct comparison of footage, right off the bat these will be much lighter and compact than the Pictors. The weight savings will be significant for a particular group of shooters.

Just saying, for less than $200 you can pick up a vintage parfocal, constant aperture (f/3.5)internal zoom (35-70mm)and adapter with that 70’s character, add gears and you can rock & roll.

I would love to grab a set of cine lenses but they aren’t really conducive to what I shoot at the moment. I still operate in the photo world, but looking to transition. I would love to get to the point where I am shopping around for a set. All of that to say, it’s always great watching what other creators are using, how they are using, and tips and pointers based on experience. I don’t have any specific questions, just interested in what you’re creating. Looking out for the next one, stay awesome!

I believe that we need to invest gears to a certain extend that we can achieve our vision or style through those gears and learn enough expeirence to move on to similar but more professional gears. As a film student and indie filmmaker, I discover that the cost to rent gears and study them (you need time to understand and get familiar) will be equally the amount of spenting them on some properly good gears (bmpcc4k, xh2s with cage, focus pro, ninja v, vmount, rig gears, and some cheap lighting), but we do need more experience and practice to either demostrate our vision & be able to use more expensive and profesional gears on set properly. To be honest, unless you are at USC NYU or Emerson, most schools don't even have same level gears as something i described as proper gears. Thus, I believe that for people who truly need to do something, they can invest proper gears to the extend that they can gain experience and finish portfolios, they can then move on to rent big gears without wasting too much time and money on learning how thouse workflows are. Plus these controlled, proper investments will allow you to freely use them to make more personal projects without cost aswell
@frankhu86926 ай бұрын
Based on my logic, investing a s35 budget cine zoom is a great investments, require less hassel, can do more trick, less lenses to carry, price is controlled, more suited for small prodcutions & run and gun, can learn how to work with proper cine zooms

My take as a videographer is simply that a hobbyist would not benefit from any cinema lens, much less a cinema zoom. Same way a hobbyist wouldn’t benefit from a box style cinema camera or a more professional video body, you have got to consider price to performance and overall value, in which case, the markup on video gear is insane, and if you’re not in that percentage of people that would benefit greatly from the design choices available in them, then don’t buy them. Get some old slr glass if you need a more consistent manual focus experience or find bodies/lenses that allow for linear focus.

Great Video, I am a big fan of your channel...I am kind of part time pro but more in multicam Classical Concert prod, Festival small doc social media artist coverage. My only true pro gear is audio,with schoeps Neuman DPA...rest are Pana gear FF MFT and some Blackmagic P4K P6K...love your concept about gear rent of the End...I am in it since 3 years coming from pure audio classical prod For ex. because every concert hall have lights I did not ever have my own 60W cob led light because I have had no use for them...since my work moved more to documentary stile artistic videos I needed to buy some entry level pro Lights...about gear aqusition I own all my cams because they are second hand used old but functional models with specific task and specific lens choice I use for each of them in my multicam setup... And renting here (CH) is very expensive in comparaison to buying used gear and I make it an investment to my compagny so can reduce my taxation...as pro work tools even the second hand stuff. btw I bought a set of Mitakons cine MFT 2 years ago +-...at the begining I had some use of them but lately I use it really no as much as I was thinking...so about cheap cine lens lime you said better for enthousiast or semi pro like me to rent them to try if they will fit the workflow. Personally I love the S35 look, and in my line of work F4 in S35 is a minimum...I often has F10 on my FF panasonic, and personaly I like zoom compression effect but I am not really a fan of super fast lenses and "bouquet". My only parfocal lens is 18-35 1.8 sigma with speedbooster.. Maybe I could revive my cine lens, and some Vintage mod lens I have found ultra cheap with the new DJI Lidar focus system... About Ranger zoom...sure I am interested and maybe could have a need for them but no budget rigjt now and priority is consolidating finances,taxes etc... To say the truth I would actually rather buy another Schoeps mic because the resale value of these mics is really very good and they are almost industrictible and sound fantqstic...If any advice you want in pro audio gear Buy schoeps like CCM or other cinema solutions they are truely top and Made in Karslruhe (Durlach) in Germany. You will not regret it! Yours Fil

I was going to comment about the MK lenses as well, would have been cool to see a comparison. The MKs are more expensive new, but having been out for a while you can get really good price for a used set. With so much of the new cameras being full frame it looks like you can get really good prices on S35 lenses.
